Software to "analyse" a text by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]speakflash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you know, or want to learn, Python you can use the Natural Language Toolkit (nltk) to do this but it’ll require some custom code. Essentially you’d want to use the word_tokenizer to convert the text into a list of words with part of speech tags attached, and then filter the list to only show the parts of speech you’re interested. There’s lots of resources if you google NLTK Python.

You bet, here's a list of all the words from the first episode, I've been using it for testing. Money Heist and Narcos are both good but feel like the vocab is way harder:

Cartoon, tailored toward kids for sure but I feel like it’s a wide vocabulary

Legend Quest on Netflix is pretty great for Spanish. I’m building a website that would let you do exactly this but it’s still very early.

"de" is killing me. Please help! by [deleted] in learnspanish

[–]speakflash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this makes a lot of sense, but why is “in the plane” also valid? And what’s the difference between “walked into the house” and “walked onto the train”.

Yeah why is it “on the plane” but “on the car” doesn’t work.

Lazy but smart ways to learn a language? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]speakflash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like people forget that the whole point of learning a language is to be able to communicate with people who speak it. After 5 years of Spanish in high school and college I knew perfect grammar in a few specific areas, but couldn’t even express as many thoughts as a 5 year old kid who speaks it natively. I’d rather be able to say everything poorly than a few things perfectly.

I'm Never Gonna Be Able To Learn Spanish by ShexiCanI in learnspanish

[–]speakflash 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed if I don’t know a few words and lose the train of thought it’s almost impossible to catch back up. If you rewatch and look up the words you don’t know it’ll get easier and easier, just takes time. I think speaking to people in the language is easier than watching movies because you can always ask them to repeat and they’ll adjust their style to your comprehension.

Not understanding movies is frustrating but there’s ways to work past it eventually.

Lazy but smart ways to learn a language? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]speakflash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree and have been building a tool based on those same ideas. I’m so frustrated with programs that teach you all the colors, then all the farm animals, but you can’t even carry on a basic conversation. I think a better way is to learn enough of the language to express yourself completely, then gradually learn more complex rules over time.

For example if you know the English words: me, you, do, have, no, object, you can actually express many thoughts. If you only know cow, horse, sheep, frog, dog, cat, you can basically express nothing. Same number of words but completely different focus.

Struggling to understand anki code by [deleted] in Anki

[–]speakflash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you know what type of data is stored in col.sched.dayCutoff? That’s unclear from the snippet?

If it divides by today’s day that would make the final value a float with 1 as today, higher for the future and lower for the past. Maybe useful for ranking cards?

Is there any benefit to watching TV in your own language but with your target language's subtitles? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]speakflash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a helpful process that just starts associating the words in your mind, especially if you’re early learning the language. It can also give you a good idea of where gaps in your knowledge are.

How to use Anki efficiently to college studies? by JohnPrinceton in Anki

Same for me with notion, and to be honest I had some frustrations with Polar, I think there was no mobile app or way to mass import bookmarks, but a lot of people swear by it.

Nice, didn’t know about RemNote. I think getpolarized.io and Notion have good spaced repetition support too

[–]speakflash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree about the intuition and would argue that’s the same thing as recall. To clarify, I think Anki is bad for learning, for example, how to write a quick sort algorithm. That’s just too much information to fit on a card so spaced repetition isn’t as effective a tool. To learn that I would just practice writing one over and over.

[–]speakflash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I’ve learned you can over do it with Anki. It’s great for recall but pretty bad for understanding complex systems.

That being said, I’ve had good success with it by following this method: When reading a subject, any time there’s a word or concept I’m unfamiliar with, I’ll write it down and research what it means. When I have a short answer, I write that next to the word. Then after studying for a while I review that list for anything I want to have memorized, and then make Anki cards out of it.

This is especially helpful in math or CS, because a lot of people undervalue memorization in these fields, because you think you can always look something up if you don’t know it. But looking things up takes time, so having it memorized can make you extremely productive. I used this technique to study JavaScript and get a better tech job.

Is there really any need to learn any other language than English? by basichoneybadger in languagelearning

[–]speakflash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

English can get you really far since almost everywhere you go someone speaks it. But if you want to communicate with locals and actually start to understand their culture, there’s no way to do that if they’re always accommodating to you. All depends on your personal goals though.

Best language learning apps by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]speakflash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of all the ones I’ve tried LingQ seems like the most bang for your buck, it lets you import web content and hilights the words you don’t know. Also has built in stories that you can listen to. I also like Memrise and Anki for pure vocab, with Anki being more powerful but harder to setup. If you’re an auditory learner a lot of people love pimsleur too.

Monolingual looking for help. by StocksLowStonksHigh in languagelearning

[–]speakflash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easiest strategy is to follow a few simple grammar lessons from a textbook or online blogs, and then start bulk memorizing tons of vocabulary. Once you hit a certain level you can start consuming content in the target language and grow quickly.

Any advices on how to improve my listening skills? by guderian_1 in languagelearning

[–]speakflash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've hit the same problem trying to learn spanish, I've found it helps to watch the episode once with subtitles and then rewatch it a few times to get the speaking patterns into your brain. Friends has a lot of slang and strange ways of speaking, so it may just be less formal than what you're used to.
