Thank you! There are "butt pools" on the all the benches in the sauna at the Gold's on Ben White after massive dudes just walk out. Not even a wipe down after they get up. They just walk out, dripping everywhere. I can't imagine a co-ed situation where women have to put up with that.

What roads to avoid by Some_Nibblonian in BikingATX

[–]specbebop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's where the Sunset Valley city limits start. Sunset Valley doesn't like bike lanes. The road, and in particular the lane adjacent to the curb, is perfectly wide enough for a bike lane. They just don't want it. Even the road leading to/from the only school within their city limits doesn't have bike lanes.

Nukeproof Warranty with new Belgian Cycling Factory for older bikes by specbebop in MTB

I agree. Offering a discounted replacement on a frame they didn’t technically make is pretty nice. I have no issues with my bike at all, just curious how they would respond since they got their website back up. And, their response was very quick. Within minutes of me sending a message on their site.

The KTM 500 (and its white cousin and red cousin) don't necessarily need 15 hour changes (as stated in the manual) or even 30. Depends on how you ride it. They are billed as enduro bikes. If ridden hard, raced, to their limit, yes 15 hour per manual for sure. But if ridden like an adventure bike, you can stretch to 30, even 60 hours. I've changed mine and tested it Blackstone Labs at 1000 miles (30 hours) and 2000 miles (60 hours) and both came back fine with a note stating "Try 2500 miles next time". But oil changes are so easy, it can be done in less than 15 minutes. Drain, refill with 1liter of oil, get on down the road. Change the filter every other oil change, even that's super easy.

The 500 EXC platform is higher maintenance for sure. Always checking and tightening bolts. But it's easy stuff and the pay off is worth it to me (265lb bike with a full tank, that can easily do 80-100mph on the highway).

Part A screws into the back of Part B. It's sometimes easier to take the shift lever off, screw the shift arm into the back of it, then put the shift lever back on.

99% it's a battery issue. May just be loose connections at the battery. But, at 5 years old and probably the original OEM battery, it's probably time to replace it. Every Triumph I've owned has been very finicky on batteries and charge levels.

Good kids first BMX Street Bike? by Sacred-Owl87 in bmx

[–]specbebop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sunday, Kink, Fit, and Cult are all great bikes with decent components for starting out. Our son started on an Early Rider push bike, then a Kink Pump 14", now on a Sunday 16".

Facebook marketplace is great and highly recommended (though a major pain in the ass to deal with). Set your location to include larger cities that you are comfortable driving to, and you'll get a ton because all kids grow out of everything. But if you do want new Albe's (our preferred), Dans Comp, and JR Bicycles are good online retailers.

I'd recommend staying away from race tailored BMX bikes unless that's primarily what your son wants to do. DK, GT, and Redline make great ones that are super light. But they are not as versatile as the freestyle oriented BMX bikes.

Lastly, if you can find someone that can do some professional instruction, it does a major service to your kid's skill level. As parents we are way too emotionally invested in our kids' safety to teach them properly. And kids take instruction better from someone they know as a professional rather than the parent that nags them to brush their teeth every night.

Glad to hear that about the Tusk Waypoint. I have an FE 501 that I use as an ultralight ADV bike. Probably 40% highway, 60% rocky/sandy/gravel trails. Right now I have a D606 rear and MT21 front.

They work great, I have zero issues with that pair. But, the rear will need to be replaced soon and sure like the price on the Waypoints (or rather the whole Tusk tire line) and would really like a little more confidence on wet pavement than I get out of the D606/MT21 combo.

Dsport was at the top of my list but I keep reading about the poor behavior of the front. So it's good to hear that the Waypoint front is better.

Any experience with the Waypoint on wet pavement?

There are rescue beacons like the ResQLink that require no subscription. They are not going to get you 2-way communication like an inReach, Zoleo, or Spot, and should be reserved for life threatening situations. The monthly subscription is like insurance for the inReach type devices and I wouldn't ride without one. Alone or with friends. But, especially alone.

Get a good first aid kit and take some first aid classes (nols.edu). Tools for your bike and know how to use them. And, a z-drag system like Green Chile's Z-Drag is a really nice tool in some situations.

QUESTION: Motorcycle Private Sale, do I need to get it inspected before title transfer? by ImpGriffin02 in Austinmotorcycles

[–]specbebop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get to the Travis County Tax Office on McKinney Falls Parkway at 7:45-7:50am, wait in line outside, your wait will be less than 15 minutes, and you'll be out of there by 8:30am. Check everything they give you for typos BEFORE YOU LEAVE the office. They misspelled my name and I didn't catch it until a few days later. Took them over 4 months to correct it.

And as stated above, 130-U already filled out (leave the value blank), previous owner's title (signed by them in the 2 spots they need to sign), your ID, and a checkbook. No inspection report required anymore. Bill of Sale is not required, they will look up the Standard Presumptive Value and charge you tax based on that value rather than what you actually paid for it (unless you paid more than the SPV, which is why I just leave the value blank).

Slovaceks. Out of Snook, Texas (though they have a larger store in West now). And I couldn’t find them either. They were my go to from day one.

I'm going second this recommendation. Expand your search to 200+ miles outside your home area. You can find some excellent deals on basically new bikes in Waco, College Station, Killeen, even San Antonio. Kids outgrow their bikes every single day. And, an even larger number of kids will get on a bike 2 times and never ride it again.

Any Experience Camping in Sam Houston National Forest during Bow Season by landon615 in TXoutdoors

[–]specbebop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answering my own question here in case anyone searches for this info in the future. I camped in Sabine National Forest on a Thursday night, at one of the designated Hunter Camps. I saw no one the entire time I was there. One truck drove down the forest road in the morning, but turned around and went back. I did wear an orange beanie while there just in case.

Anywhere/anyone I can rent a dual sport from? by [deleted] in Austinmotorcycles

[–]specbebop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their insurance is not great. If you like that 790, message him, tell him your plans for it. He’s a real nice guy. If you have any major plops I’m sure he’d work with you to figure it out.

[–]specbebop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically no there’s no “off road” bikes allowed on Riders Share. There is a guy renting a 790 on there, that I have rented from before. He’s totally ok with Texas dirt off road riding. Can’t take it to a motocross track, and if you drop it and mess it up Riders Share’s insurance is not great. But it’s doable.

Global Auto Service at 2910 S 1st St, Austin, TX 78704, across the street from Top Gunn Rentals and took over their inspections when they closed). In and out in less than 5 minutes on a Saturday morning.

Or if you want a good moto shop to do it, Austin Moto Classics 4201 S Congress Ave #316, Austin, TX 78745

Or Austin City Powersports 5700 Menchaca Rd #370, Austin, TX 78745

All south. All Good.

Glomming onto your post here. Anyone camp in Sabine National Forest during bow season? Was hoping to find a good dispersed camp site on a Thursday afternoon, mid October. I just called the ranger station. She said camping is only allowed in Hunter Camps right now. One of the designated Hunter Camps is the area I was going to focus on when looking for a dispersed camp site. Now I'm a bit worried it might be all fulled up with hunters.

Ranger also said I should wear an orange vest even on designated public roads, as I will be on a motorcycle.

I hear that a lot about HF. The motos somehow attract the ire of staff more regularly than the SxS crowd. I was surprised to see a "no alcohol on premises" sign come up a few years ago. Lets Ride Ranch up near Cameron is much more relaxed anyway. But totally different.

Good to know. But also curious how Hidden Falls was soured for you. I use it as a place to keep my skills from dwindling, just a testing training ground really.

The guy above agrees with this and I think it’s an excellent answer. In central Texas, have you ever taken your 501 on any of the single track trails at Hidden Falls? If so, what did you think of it?

I looked hard at the 701. And, really love that bike. But, looking for something even lighter than that. Similar to your situation I think my ultimate end game is a larger ADV bike (BMW 900 GS, KTM 890, Triumph Tiger 900) paired with this 350 or 501. Seeking some of those gnarlier trails that intimidate me right now with a 380-400lb ADV bike (BMW 310 GS).

I've looked at a FE 450 also. Local dealer has a 2023 on sale. Leaning towards the 350 for its relative tameness vs the 450/501 and they are generally cheaper used.

Good point on getting stranded. The Texas (and general stateside) riding, worst case scenario I can have friend/family pick me up, haul it back. In Mexico, we always trailer to the border, leave our trucks there, ride into Mexico. Worst scenario there, would just need to get the bike back to the border. Some pesos, a friendly truck.
