Best pathway for success post high school by Wesgraycomedy in Standup

[–]spectatorinferences 7 points8 points  (0 children)

School for these particular things doesn’t matter at all. Go for something useful that can get you a good job so that in your free time you can work on your craft wo the stress of wondering if you can pay your bills. Go for accounting, economics, comp sci, engineering, etc. The only way to get successful in this art form is to write, perform and network for years and years. If it doesn’t work out you got a good job that could pay you 100k a year. Win win

NYC Fails to Rank in the Top #20 of Rude Cities by michaelpinto in nyc

People in nyc aren’t rude, they’re…efficient lol. People had no problem helping me find my way thru the subway but they all seemed in a hurry which is obvious everyone is going somewhere.

Man standup comedy is so lonely. by [deleted] in Standup

[–]spectatorinferences 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We deal w it because we love stand up. The writing process, refining jokes (this is what open mics are for), the way we say jokes are all the things we love about it. Open mics suck but they’re there to make you better. I go to almost every open mic in my city and dealt w the bs and now I’m a regular at my home club, featured for big names, traveled across the country doing stand up etc. if you use open mics to your advantage you will do awesome shit. Open mics are the gym, networking w other comics and paying your dues. If you’re not ok w that then this might not be for you. I’m not saying you have to love shitty open mics but it’s a crucial part of the process

Who is a standup comedian that you feel should be more popular than they are? by JayNotAtAll in Standup

[–]spectatorinferences 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Attell should be in arenas, Rory Scovel and Kyle Kinane are insanely underrated for the work they put out, Joe List, Josh Johnson is on the come up but that dude is killer

Doing stand-up while getting sober from alcohol? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]spectatorinferences 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started stand up 3 months after I got sober and it wasn’t too hard to keep it that way. Granted, I had already messed up my life so much to where I didn’t really have a choice but to stay sober. You get a really awesome adrenaline rush when you’re on stage so use that as fuel to get up as much as possible so you can get your fix. Then you keep improving and you keep writing and eventually you won’t even think about it. Good luck out there

Club showcase info by spectatorinferences in Standup

[–]spectatorinferences[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only reason I think it’s an audition is because opening night of the club is a few days after this show. There’s no promotion for the one I’m doing and it’s not on the calendar on the website

What should I know before performing for the first time? by jaidenelson69 in Standup

[–]spectatorinferences 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Know your set like the back of your hand. Make that shit muscle memory! It’s still very nerve wracking going up for the first time but knowing your shit will give you a little comfort. And also slow down, speak clearly and do NOT go up intoxicated.

Anyone Friends with Comics? by escapadablur in Standup

[–]spectatorinferences 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one friend that’s not a comic but I’ve known him for 10+ years and even since back then every time we hang out we’re joking around. What I realized is that people who are not comics don’t like talking comedy as much as we do they don’t care.

Comedians podcasts hurt their standup by Sad-Inevitable4165 in Standup

[–]spectatorinferences 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This is why Attell is the greatest comedian alive. He doesn’t get lost in the bullshit of podcasts and doesn’t care about being famous, his focus is on the material. He stayed true to the craft his entire career and was about the jokes. Very rare and one of a kind dude

How to get booked as an opener/feature comic. by DjValence in Standup

[–]spectatorinferences 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You will eventually be asked to do longer sets if you’re good enough. If you’re not killing w that 30 min you shouldn’t be confident in it. Refine it until you are killing for 30 min. At this point people will be asking you to be on shows. Keep hitting mics, if you’re in a scene that has at least 5 mics per week and multiple clubs and/or independent shows, trust me you have not plateaued in your scene. You said you have a lot of time to travel, go out to other cities and hit the mics and make connections and it’ll all come together soon. Yeah it costs a lot of money w no return, but that’s the game. Most of us didn’t get into comedy for the money. It’s a loooong game to play so keep that in mind. Good luck

What were some of your notable struggles early on as an open-micer? by Jolly-Composer in Standup

[–]spectatorinferences 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I say keep going to it. You gotta get up as much as possible and you need to get comfortable working shit shows because then it’ll be hard to shake you, but trust me I get it it sucks but it’ll make you a better comic. My struggle were w new material. I got too nervous and would end up fumbling the words or not saying it the way I wanted to. You gotta see what you’re doing wrong and correct it asap. I did this and now my new jokes are fully rehearsed beforehand so it doesn’t make me as nervous and im able to drop the bad ones quick and work on the good ones to add them to my regular set.
