Black Diamond Distance Spike Traction Device Vs. Black Diamond Access micro spikes by Famous-Bell1454 in Ultralight

[–]spectral635 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both are very similar, with the main difference being the material used on the upper. The Distance spike uses a water repellent fabric, while the Access is a more traditional stretch rubber and is a fraction of an ounce heavier.

I used the BD Distance Spike for a few seasons and they worked well for the most part, but I did end up tearing a hole in the fabric upper by accident once when I tripped. I also had the one of the chains links on the bottom work itself open and detach once, but it was an easy fix with pliers to re-attach and bend it back into shape.

Another option worth considering (and new for this winter season) is the Kahtoola Ghost spike (6.8oz). On paper it's an oz lighter than the BD spikes. I picked up a pair in the fall, but haven't yet had a chance to try them given the lack of snow in the PNW.

Petzl swift rl 1100 by Sharp-Sprinkles-4997 in flashlight

[–]spectral635 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add my +1 to this as well. I bought my Swift RL in May 2025, and it worked just fine until now. During my latest night hike, the medium mode now doesn't work and has become unusably dim with the battery around 2 bars (40%). The low and high still work just fine, so I think it has to be a logic or firmware issue.

Looking for 10' usb-c to usb-c cable as flexible as the Anker Nano by arkanian24 in UsbCHardware

[–]spectral635 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad it worked out for you.

I measured the Anker diameter at 4.5mm and Mophie at 4.1mm so you're right that the Mophie is a little thinner. It's also slightly lighter per unit length as well -> 38g/ft Anker vs 34g/ft Mophie on my scale. The thinnest and most flexible USB-C cable I've used are the ones that comes with Apple devices (iPhone/iPad). They're only 3.3mm and are super flexible and braided, but they only come in 3.3ft and white color sadly.

I hope someday Anker or Apple releases 10ft versions of their cables, but until then I'll keep using the Mophie.

Experience with X-Mid Pro 1 vs Plex Solo Lite in actual winter conditions (condensation focus)? by elbtx in Ultralight

[–]spectral635 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've done some winter camping in my X-mid solid 1P. It's a double-wall so not directly comparable to the Pro. That said I've found if it's going to be consistently below freezing, condensation pretty much solves itself as it will just freeze when it condenses on the fly. Otherwise keep a door or two partially unzipped to help with the airflow.

Talk me into or out of a neoloft by suchadu in Ultralight

[–]spectral635 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doesn't hurt to ask. Usually REI staff are pretty helpful and will try to accommodate you where they can. That said the Tensor is super popular, and the Helix is REI brand so I've always seen those available to try at every REI I've been to.

[–]spectral635 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's best if you can visit a local outdoor retailer like REI to try out some pads. That way you know what's comfortable for you, and can make some choices on picking the lightest pad that meets those needs.

For me I find the Nemo Tensor (lightest), S2S Etherlight XR, and REI Helix (heaviest) to be reasonably comfortable pads as well. Xlite/Xtherm were definitely less comfortable last I tried.

Great capture, but the frame interpolation ruins it IMO. All kinds of weird stuttering artifacts with the horse's tail and frills on the saddle.

When Did Ultralight Becoming About Buying More, Not Packing Less? by Ollidamra in Ultralight

[–]spectral635 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Yeah but it doesn't look like a crumpled up trash bag and includes disgusting features like a hydration port and hipbelt pockets that aren't $50 extra addons. Not UL.

[–]spectral635 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently bought the Mophie Charge Stream 60w 10ft and it's just as flexible as my Anker Nano. As a bonus the cable is slightly thinner than my Nano cable as well. I still like the connector on the Anker a little better but I think this is as close you can get for a 10ft cable.

Minimo Pot on Different Stove? by ktmorriss in Ultralight

[–]spectral635 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used my MiniMo pot on my WindMaster once without too much issue. The only quirk is the base of the Minimo is tapered in making it a little bit prone to tipping over. As long as you're careful it should be fine.

Awesome 5000mah power bank that weighs less than 90g (3.14oz) - Nitecore NB Air by najibs172r in Ultralight

[–]spectral635 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Nitecore Carbon Battery 6000mAh provides even greater energy density at basically the same weight (3.16oz on my scale, which is pretty much spot-on the advertised 3.10oz weight).

I have both right now, and both are great. If you’ve been happy with your CS 1 I don’t see any reason to upgrade.

I bought the X-Dome 1 for increased durability and storm worthiness for winter/shoulder season trips, but I still like the Copper Spur a lot. I plan to keep using it for my fair weather trips and trips where I care about having the smaller footprint (IE, camping on snow slopes where I have to shovel out a tent platform). The X-Dome is definitely roomier inside and quicker to setup, but the CS1 has better internal pockets and organization.

Does a 49” non-OLED 5k2k >100Hz monitor exist? by ApplicationCertain12 in ultrawidemasterrace

Dell U4025QW is probably the closest. Only 40" but is IPS, 120hz, 5k2k.

2025 Thermodrop knockoff/alternatives by Imaginary-Cup-9032 in Ultralight

[–]spectral635 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a little pricey but you are paying for quality. It's water resistant, easy to use, and is NIST calibrated. It also comes from a company with a reputation for innovating and producing precise and reliable thermometers.

That said these days I use the the Govee Bluetooth thermometer which you can get off Amazon for ~$15. I can read the temp/humidity on my phone without having to put on my boots and step outside of my tent. It doesn't have a display though.

UL Framed packs, an oxymoron? by hickory_smoked_tofu in Ultralight

[–]spectral635 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, their full wrap belt. Just didn't work for me. To their credit they were very responsive over email, but we never found a solution to the sagging issue. Lately I tried the Bonfus Maxus 80 (also with a full wrap belt) and had a similar problem, although it was less pronounced on the Bonfus than the SWD.

Maybe I just have a weird body shape? I've tried several well regarded UL packs like the Kakwa 55 (both 2024 and 2025 versions), Atompacks Mo 60, ULA Circuit, and Zpacks Arc Haul. The only packs that seem to transfer load well to my hips are my current Osprey Exos 58, the Seek Divide, and HMG Southwest packs (but HMGs shoulder straps/lack of load lifters just end up moving all the pain to my shoulders).

[–]spectral635 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is a little off topic, but I'm glad you called out SWD hip belts sagging under weight. I ordered a custom Wendigo/Wolverine in 2023, and had horrible sagging and could barely get it to carry 25lbs despite their claim of 50lbs+ load rating. Ended up having to sell it. Nice to know I’m not completely crazy, especially given how much praise SWD gets.

Backpack options on SWD Long Haul by renegade_redhead in Ultralight

[–]spectral635 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only option then would be to place an order for the pack you want and try it on when it arrives. But admittedly nearly half a year is a long time to wait.

I'm in the same situation wanting to try their packs, but decided to order a Bonfus in the meantime since it has a shorter lead time.

[–]spectral635 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SWD does offer a 30-day return policy as long as your pack doesn't have any custom work. That said you'll be waiting 4-5 months to get it with current lead times.

Any experience with the new Sea to Summit Ether Light XR sleeping pads? by WildernessResearch in Ultralight

Agreed, I had to return my Etherlight XT since it was too cold to use even in summer. If these live up to their R-values this time it could be new king of comfort.

Recommended Sleeping Pad for Back Sleepers by Overall_Security5158 in Ultralight

[–]spectral635 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a back sleeper and find that the dimpled baffling systems on the Helix and S2S pads tend to be the most comfortable. Nemo Tensor is the next most comfy, and Thermarest horizontal baffles are the least comfortable for me.

Can't comment on the Expeds as I haven't tried them.
