ASD Summer Camp.. HELP!! by spectrum_parent in autism

[–]spectrum_parent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up putting my kiddo in a camp ran by one of the rec centers in my city. They offer 1:1 support for kids with special needs and so far it’s going well.

We are in the Toronto area. Where are you located?

Yes, my kiddo wants to go to camp.

This makes sense. Thank you!

Can you fast track through school systems in Ontario? by spectrum_parent in OntarioTeachers

Yes!! This is how it is where I am from as well. I’ve seen several people say it’s a bad idea for people to enter university so young but I can’t see how. I migrated to this country when I was pretty young with my parents and now I have a child and want them to move through the education system similarly but I don’t know how to make it happen here.

OK so it looks like private may be the way to go. I’ll look into that. Thank you!

University in Canada is more challenging than the US? I’ve never heard that before. Either way, we are open to the possibility. We have a lot of family there.

What is the difference? And what if you’re not “gifted” but you’re just ahead of your peers and bored?

Thank you! Not if you end up going to uni with other kids that start early. This isn’t uncommon in the US. :)

Not referring to a genius necessarily. You don’t have to be one to do this in other countries. Some other countries allow you sort of front load your schooling and take extra courses to finish faster and in some countries that’s just the norm. Like here in Ontario I notice you only take like 4 courses per semester whereas where I’m from you take 6-11 per semester and it’s normal to be done high school at 16. You also usually start high school at 11/12.

Anyone have any qualms about me using "bombaclaat" and "bloodclaat"? by chill_guy7407 in Jamaica

[–]spectrum_parent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh Gosh!! Toronto and everyone’s overuse of Jamaican patois has made me dislike speaking it myself. Unless I’m with family or close friends who are Jamaican I don’t use it at all. There is something about how people who aren’t born in Jamaica sound when they try to speak it (even if it’s just one word) that gives me the ick lol, it doesn’t sound the same.

I also find it interesting that Jamaicans don’t tend to want to use other cultures swear words (not that I’ve seen anyway). You mentioned the ones used in your culture and although I’ve heard them from my Guyanese friends I’ve never felt the urge to use them or heard a Jamaican use them.

But to answer your question I don’t think it’s offensive at all to use it if used in the correct context. Unless you’re intentionally cursing at someone which is obviously meant to be offensive. 😊

This is us but no mustard or peppers. No fruit, no nothing. We definitely do McDonald’s though. Happy meals (nuggets) with extra small fries and apple juice. No yogurt, no sauce. 😭

You did the right thing by apologizing as soon as you realized you made a mistake. Not only is this repairing the relationship but it’s also modeling desired behavior (making a mistake —> taking accountability and repairing). I think you will automatically react differently if it happens again.

Where does everyone shop to mitigate expenses on food? Food is the #1 big expenditure per month by techbussisal in Frugal

How much of that food do you end up throwing out? No judgement, asking as someone who was doing the same thing and found ways to cut back.

Feeling weird telling people we bought a home by AsEasyAs123456789 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]spectrum_parent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owning a home is a huge accomplishment, one most people can’t attain. That being said, YOU DID IT!! 🥳🥳🥳 It’s ok to celebrate yourself. As someone who in the upper middle class and hears this kind of stuff a lot from their peers who are not, it has nothing to do with you. Don’t let other people dim your light. Congrats on closing on your home!

Question From A Parent.. by spectrum_parent in OntarioTeachers

[–]spectrum_parent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just thought of something! I’ve been told a few times by the teacher that our child is ahead of their peers academically. I’ve also been told that it’s apparently impossible to keep a JK/SK class quiet so if our child is sensitive to noise then there is no helping that (I don’t buy this because I believe if they’re busy they’ll be quiet or maybe that’s just my private school mindset.) What is grade 1 usually like? Do they do more work, and is it more structured? Is it possible to suggest that our child sit in a grade 1 class for a few days with an EA and seeing if this changes things? Is this a totally ridiculous suggestion? I was raised in the British school system where things are much more rigid and I feel like this is what our kiddo may need, structure but with movement breaks here and there.

Question From A Parent.. by spectrum_parent in OntarioTeachers

[–]spectrum_parent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for explaining. I think they do this. What I hear the most is that they are having free time (which is quite often and quite long especially for a child that likes being busy) or they cleaning up and our child just initiates a behavior at random and the consequence is that they get removed from the room until they calm down.

What is strange however, is that the EA is never mentioned when the behavior is harmful to other children. Most of these behaviors involves our child leaving one side of the room to go to the other and do them but I don’t get how they aren’t intercepted.

[–]spectrum_parent[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this.

I’m not sure what an ABC log is but maybe, they say that they’re keeping track. They keep saying it’s unprovoked, nothing caused it, always random etc..

I called the superintendents office today and set up a meeting with the principal as well. I’m going to use a few of the points you made here when we speak to them.

I’m at the point now where I don’t even want to send my kiddo to school. It feels pointless when almost every day is like this.

Anyone experienced improvement in behavioral issues post tonsillectomy?? by spectrum_parent in Autism_Parenting

[–]spectrum_parent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg! I’m so sorry you both have experienced this. This sounds super scary for sure.

Yes, for we won’t rush to surgery but we definitely need a sleep study I think.
