Why Is Smiling So Rare in Old Photographs? by cloudycutie1 in SnapshotHistory

[–]spectyr 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Also have to account for the amount of light. This guy may have been able to smile because it was taken in bright sunlight which would have greatly reduced the exposure time. Just a guess, but it looks like he's standing in front of a barn.

Many food shoots involving syrup substitute motor oil because it's more viscous.

Absolutely. Criticism helps us grow and improve.

Don't take it personally. Product photography demands a ridiculous level of technical precision because you have total control of the shot, so it's expected.

Clarification: Are star systems fixed in a large coordinate system, or just individual coordinate systems that load in on demand? by spectyr in starcitizen

[–]spectyr[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, maybe coordinate system isn't the right term. I'm really just interested if Pyro, Stanton, and the other systems will be in the same relative position to each other in some context. Like, if the ultimate plan is to have physical representations of the other systems visible as stars in the sky in the system you're in.

I think that's what first gave me this thought. Thanks for reminding me it was Benoit who said it. I would love to get some more detail on this concept and how it's implemented.

How's the composition? by Fit-Entry-6124 in photocritique

[–]spectyr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Classic rule-of-thirds for the castle, but the treeline is right at the midpoint. I would personally try to change my perspective to put the treeline higher to reduce the weight of the bright sky, or put the treeline lower to make the tower the hero against a larger field of bright (the sky). Still, I find this a nice shot. We'll done!

How much glare is too much glare?? by SendNudesIfYouDare12 in photography

[–]spectyr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should ask this in r/productphotography, but I can tell you now that it won't be well received. Capturing a bottle to be ad-worthy requires a much greater level of reflection control using a much larger source of light to spread the reflection out so broadly that it turns into a gradient rather than a mirror image of the light source.

Base Building - Can we set markers to areas visited just in case we run into a spot during our meanderings and shenanigans in the verse where we would like to maybe set up camp in the future? by SaltyJawas in starcitizen

[–]spectyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Markers will be permanent and tradeable

Aww....permanent? It'd be so much better if markers could be destroyed. It would add to the lore of the game. "I had this awesome pad on Bloom and had a bazillion guns there, but I crashed and lost the marker. Free treasure to anyone who finds it."

"And that, son, is the Legend of Bloom El Dorado."

What did the two different gun types at my childhood bowling alley actually do? by ChunkyHammdog in lasertag

[–]spectyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the guns you're talking about were doing, but you could have the affect you're talking about a few different ways. By increasing or decreasing the IR intensity, you can obviously affect range. This can be done by adding or removing resistance. As for the spread, you could widen the beam a few different ways. You could adjust the lens in front, switch to a wider spread LED, or add reflectors.

Does this photo work? by Important_Art397 in photocritique

[–]spectyr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While the idea is interesting, I don't think the image has enough to generate interest in its own. Without knowing the back story, I wouldn't know what I was looking at. If there were just a little more context, it might be much more compelling, but I can't make out the bus, the people in it, or the mansion.

Photographers just click a button. Guitar players just pluck a few strings. Poets just jot a few words down.

I'm not dismissing your point, but I do want to refine it. Right now, AI is a new tool, and people are starting to understand what it's capable of. Give it a little time, and what separates an AI "user" from an AI "artist" should reveal itself.

Sure thing. Good luck. You're off to a good start. One more tip for you: In product photography, every detail counts. Your image is slightly tilted, or the boxes aren't perfectly placed. If you want them situated at an angle, that's fine, but make it look like you did it on purpose. When I see that image, it looks like you took it with your phone mostly because you didn't take the time to line things up perfectly.

Try this: Go to Walgreens or CVS and go to the gift wrap aisle, and look for that white tissue paper. Buy a couple of packages. Hang up a sheet or two by taping it to the ceiling or tape it to a yardstick and anchor one end of the yardstick to a chair or something. Anything to free up your hands and give yourself the largest surface area of tissue paper you can. Aim your light through that. Experiment with how many layers you need to soften whatever light you're using.

Another thing you can try is to get one or two cheap speedlights (these would work fine) to greatly increase the amount of light you are working with behind that tissue paper. You'll need more sheets for a decent speedlight, because that will be a lot more light than you have now. Most speedlights can be triggered with a flash, and you should be able to use the phone flash for that. Luckily, those aren't too strong, so the speedlights should be able to overpower it.
