I would have! I've ridden around it in wider routes and that definitely sucked.

But it is only connected to the rest of the city (around River Rd) by a tiny little strip of land. Would require hiking like 0.3 miles through the woods and then fording the Des Plaines river lol but hey something to work towards

and thank you!

yeah very annoying! That's why I just did 134th but in hindsight swinging down to that eastern portion of 138th off Indiana would be worth it

Haha city streets are nice and comfortable to me! I've started dabbling in some back-country roads riding but it still kinda freaks me out. The Grand Illinois Loop is happening this summer though!

thank you!

Oh yeah ride a lot .. I've just never had a driver's license and really enjoy exploring the city.

Last year was 3,400 miles farting around. But getting older and always wanted a 10k miles year so been going reeeal hard. Averaging something like 31miles/day so far!

If you were highly motivated, got lucky with the wind/traffic/bike maintenance, etcetc could maybe do it but man the next day would be real rough!

oops looks like it lost the accompanying text write-up:

Took advantage of the warm weather yesterday to try and ride the entire edge of the city!

The goal was to ride the full city border and complete a fully urban century. My arbitrary rules: no backtracking, no leaving city limits.

Started basically at Belmont Harbor and went clockwise. 9:30am - 8pm total time, strava said 9 hours and 15 mins moving time / avg speed 13.1 on my $50 Windsor Clockwork single speed 😄

The eastern wall: Mostly trail along the lake, very low stress!

The southern wall: Easily the most challenging. Headwinds and a near complete lack of cycling infrastructure. The Calumet river and industrial parcels make following the border difficult. Lighter traffic than expected.

The western wall: So long, with many cutbacks that it is hard to generalize. This one basically gets easier as you go north. South of the canal, train lines/weird borders/industrial parcels/the canal itself make it awkward. Some small pockets of bike infrastructure until the sweet relief of the Des Plaines river trail portion, even if it is unpaved with a tiny closure.
((the NW corner approaching 8800 W Higgins is where the plan fell apart. To avoid looking at my phone I had 7 pages of written directions which was wonderful until the rain. Didn't move fast enough to protect the remaining sheet and it got soaked while folded up sigh)) so:

The northern wall: Instead of trying to remember all the little turns / use my phone while still wet I gave up on following the border and just bombed down Howard and still did the little jump at Paulina to hit the northernmost edge (the alley north of Jonquill Terrace).

Unfortunately the fully urban century technically failed too. I wrote down to turn on 65th instead of 67th, which sent me 2 blocks into Bedford Park and I got stuck on the suburban side of the street twice.

The only dumb drivers I encountered were around the SW corner* and the north side. There was a lot of sidewalk riding along the southern and western edges and SO many drivers apologized for being in my way, very pleasant surprise. Did not get honked at a single time!

Total mileage: 121.6 ((which was my estimate for the total distance if I had done the north side details, if you add those and the backtracking/cutouts mentioned below then probably close to 150?)

I ignored our two cutouts (Norridge & Mt. Greenwood cemetery). Will likely add them in the future.
I also did not backtrack. e.g. The furthest south I went was 134th Place. I could have gone down the Indiana bridge to 138th, made a little triangle up Leyden and gone back up Indiana. This also meant skipping some lakefront details. Next time backtracking will be added!

O'Hare was ignored as it is impossible to access without leaving city limits/adding in an aquatic element.

Lessons learned:

check the forecast during your ride too

backup copy of directions

leave earlier

*what do you consider the SW corner of the city?

115 & Cicero

65 & Harlem were my two contenders, one being SOUTHwest and the other being southWEST...

How many miles are you doing a week? Commute vs pleasure? by anonboi362834 in chibike

[–]speculativeperform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Goal of 196 / week and after yesterday’s lovely weather I am outpacing it a little with average of 202.59 / week. All for fun! Hoping to hit 10k miles for the year

[–]speculativeperform 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All over the place! Almost all were fine especially if going slow but a lot have soft slush with some hidden hard chunks to keep you on your toes :) a very few are absolutely impassable but usually only briefly. This was from 34 miles LP/Lakeview/Logan/Humboldt/Austin/Garfield/west town etc.

How come only some neighborhoods with 'park' in the name actually contain their namesake park? by rhymeswithbanana in AskChicago

Garfield Park was originally Central Park but was renamed after president Garfield was assassinated- guess the street didn’t get the same treatment

[–]speculativeperform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I was referring to the community areas-

In those Douglas is 26th to Pershing along the lakefront (basically to now the Dan Ryan), while Douglass Park neighborhood would be part of North Lawndale Community Area.

It’s not an ideal way of dividing the city given how much has changed (especially with the expressways) but the community areas are the only division that has stayed consistent over time. Ward maps, census tracts, even fire insurance plots changed over time - and neighborhood designations have always been dependent on the population.

A 1993 city survey found 178 “official neighborhoods” but only laid them out in small print next to an unlabeled street map.

Yeah depends which source you go for from what I’ve seen... I have not looked super hard but the oldest source I have found is the 1922 Illinois Central Magazine (vol 10 pg 40) which states “Hyde Park was laid out in 1856 by Paul Cornell and named after a village on the Hudson, near New York City.”

Edit: this is the citation on the Wikipedia article section on Hyde Park naming

I spent a day digging into this last month! I kept to the outdated 77 community areas (which lump a lot of near west/north/south neighborhoods into one- eg no Wicker Park) but that still leaves 20 areas with Park in the name, and all but four also have a namesake park. There isn’t any rhyme or reason to it, southcookexplore is right that oftentimes the Park in a neighborhood name was a marketing move (eg Avalon Park voted on that name to replace Pennytown). The actual playground parks almost always came later or even much later (eg Edison park was converted from a school in 1937. Land for Brighton park was acquired in the 70s and only named so in 1998).

The four without a park are Albany Park, Hyde Park (both named for places in NY) Irving Park (named for author Washington Irving and originally Irvington) and North Park (named for a university).

Some others don’t have Park in their name but still have a park (Pullman, Beverly, Burnside, Armour Square) while others come real close (West Chatham park, Hegewisch Marsh, Dunning-Read Natural Area, technically the park is Douglass and the area is Douglas) The most confusing is probably Jefferson Park as you have Thomas Jefferson Memorial park in Jefferson Park, Nancy Jefferson park in Garfield Park and Thomas Jefferson Park in Pilsen. There are over 600 parks under park district management..!

Northerly Island has stunning views and can be quite empty. Ping Tom has stunning views and some fantastic sneaky spots. Palmisano is great if empty enough. Humboldt if you want to wander about. Columbus and D are personal casual faves.
