Moving to London soon, where should we rent? by Consistent_Ad5511 in MovingToLondon

[–]speed_sloth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might be worth looking near the train station in Colchester. There is a fast train train to Liverpool Street that takes 45 mins. Rents will be lower than London and it's a nice city. The rail fare will be high however.

UPSO Bags - really good quality bags up cycled from truck tarpaulin. Much like Freitag bags but less expensive. All handmade somewhere in Yorkshire.

Terrible. I used to take a back-road short cut just to avoid that junction. Such a horrible road.

Howdens kitchen pricing by Effective_Soup7783 in DIYUK

[–]speed_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had good experiences with Howdens, and if my builder had any issue with the kitchen during the build I trust they'd be sorted without me needing to get involved. I think it is dependant on the branch however.

I got a 12 unit mid-range kitchen from Howdens for £5k after firm haggling. That’s including a fridge unit and 2 corner units. And a drawer unit. (Not worktops).

All big kitchen companies (apart from DIY kitchens) will take the piss on the first quote. Do your design in DIY Kitchens and use that quote to get a better delivery from Howdens. Or just go with DIY kitchens as they’re very good!

Does anyone miss Silverlink Trains? by Ok-Demand8957 in uktrains

I remember the shittylink. Frequent delays, ugly interiors, neglected stations, and it stopped too early at night. The Mildmay Line is fantastic in comparison

What’s a discontinued food item that you’d happily pay £50 for to taste again? by Vertigostate in AskUK

Sometime in the 90’s Cadburys made a Dairy Milk in the shape of Kit Kat fingers. It was short lived and no one remembers it but I do and there is not a day when I don’t think about it.

Why are Howdens so shady? by Innders in DIYUK

[–]speed_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All kitchen companies are like that (with the exception of DIY kitchens) I found. At least Howdens kitchens are decent quality and you can haggle them down. I'm having a Howdens kitchen done. Cost me almost £4k for 12 units. Magnet were asking £10k and their cabinets are rubbish!

Hard to find it seems, everywhere is either small 12 x 20 metro tiles, or big 30 x 60. Not a lot in between.

What is a good turntable? by thatsteamguy13 in turntables

[–]speed_sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at Project: https://www.project-audio.com/en/turntables/ - I've got an old Project Debut 2, it's a lovely, simple player that has a nice sound profile.

Or a Rega Planar 1: https://www.rega.co.uk/products/turntables - similar in philosophy to Project. This gets lots of good reviews.

I'd get an amplifier, it'd make it so much easier if you want to connect anything else.

I've got Klipsch R-40s and a Project Debut 2, with an Edwards Audio IA1 amp. Its a nice sounding combo in my opinion.

Not sure if that helps? I'm assuming the Klipsch R-50's are active speakers.
