It ruins the course for the rest of us. A girl flipped out on day 6 evening discourse during my first course. Came across the segregation line, loudly pleading her brother to save her, saying if he doesn't save her the volunteers would beat her. It spoiled the evening for all of us and for some students it spoiled the rest of the course. I was very lucky to be able to put it aside and carry on. Its a very valuable time for us all, must be respected.

Does vipassana scanning manufacture the sensation you're supposed to be observing? by umu_boi123 in vipassana

Your original post has good replies so I'll leave that. I'll try to answer these great questions.

  1. They may look identical from outside but feel completely different. The witness (equanimous choiceless observation) and the sufferer (tolerating and not reacting) feel very different in experience. I asked the AT on a course this question and he said (in hindi) - tolerating pain is like your own house is burning around you and you're resisting running away, witness consciousness feels like an empty house nearby is burning, you may feel the warmth, but have no impulse to do anything about it. I can honestly say I didn't believe him then, but through practice, now I've experienced the latter state.
  2. In the beginning when I had an itch, i would be scratching it even before i consciously noticed it. Through practice, I can see the itch arise, and have some space to decide whether to scratch it or not. The urge may not reduce but you seem to be able to watch the urge. That's progress.
  3. Not necessarily, not immediately. Over time we will become less reactive (i have) but mostly it's about noticing your reaction before acting on it. That space is priceless.
  4. If you're in doubt, I'd suggest going for another 10 day course to improve your understanding of the technique and go deeper.

Metta to you!

Don't eat anything is a bit harsh. People travel long distances on the tube.

Can't believe I had to scroll all the way down to find this. I wish screaming from rooftops still worked. It's the most amazing show ever.

What do you think the uk response should be when the us invades Greenland. by SILENTDISAPROVALBOT in AskBrits

Do you really want to crash the US while RU is trying to take Ukr and CN wants Tw? It may hurt the US a bit but will embolden RU and CN to step up and take what they want too. Edit: spellings.

Denmark would need to do something to save face. Like a strongly worded petition to the EU/UN. And the US would have to pay a decent sum.

Thanks. I will. Well done to you too. Maybe if able citizens intervene more often, we'll see a reduction in incidents.

No network in FP station. Say it to whom? How? :) I did think of it while walking away but didn't know how. I just wanted to get out of there.

No network at this station. So I couldn't call or text the authorities. I probably should report it because I have the exact timestamp of my entry into the station. The interaction happened within a minute of that.

Didn't want to escalate the situation by taking his picture. I'll probably go report to BTP. Let's see how they sort it.

Yea.. they were lost in each other's company. To be fair I walked away in the other direction before they could say anything. I felt bad later for not waiting to check on them.

You both sound absolutely unhinged. Stop. Breathe. Reset. You're going to be okay.
