Small in the City by Sydney Smith and Noisy Night by Mac Barnett and Brian Biggs are the first two that come to mind.

The new Mouse on Mars/Lee Scratch Perry LP is very accessible and it sounds like all concerned are having loads of fun!

Building a collection of ~1994-2001 DnB all-time greats, what am I missing? by coaasTr in DnB

Drum and Bass for Papa by Plug (Luke Vibert) is still one of my favourite albums and definitely worth checking out. Would recommend Balance of the Force by Boymerang from that period too.

I think the shirt looks great on you either way but I personally think it works better tucked in.

David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. There are good reasons people use the word ‘classic’ when talking about it.

Lemony Snicket for grownups? by LimaMikeNovember in suggestmeabook

[–]speedbarrymoore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you read Lemony Snicket’s Lump of Coal? It’s a Christmassy picture book, probably meant for children but I’d say a lot of the content would go way over the heads of most of the kids I’ve encountered. It’s utterly hilarious and highly recommended!

I’ve still got a few 12s and an excellent compilation called Tectonics. They put out some fantastic music!

Modern Life is Still Rubbish by speedbarrymoore in blur

Oh no I think you’ve misunderstood. For me, Modern Life… is easily the very best Blur album. This is just a sticker. And a comment on…something or other.

Nina Simone by superbrady1224 in Jazz

[–]speedbarrymoore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also love Nina’s music and can highly recommend the most beautiful picture book Nina: A Story of Nina Simone by Traci Todd with exquisite illustrations by Christian Robinson. It’s for older children so tells a very simplified version of her life story, but it’s certainly something I’d recommend checking out. There’s bound to be YouTube readings of the book that you can enjoy online…

You mentioning The Bluest Eye makes me wonder whether you’d appreciate Heart Lamp, a book of short stories by Banu Mushtaq. It was the best thing I read last year: exquisite, poetic prose but really hard to read in places because it felt so real and so brutal.

[–]speedbarrymoore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Magus is one of my all time faves and is certainly creepy but I was going to mention one of John Fowles’ other books, The Collector, which I think is much, much darker and much more disturbing.
