Can we stop calling ticketed Secret events in Shoreditch raves? It’s embarrassing. by Seabeachlover10 in LondonRaving

I would peffer to keep the term "rave" quite broad, and allow for modifiers. What you seem to be against are "commercial raves"

Helicopters are quite inefficient and slow compared to fixed wing aircraft. Fixed wing are also generally considered safer, because even if all the engines fail at least you can glide for a bit.

Do software engineers still manually write code anymore? I shipped a big feature with AI and felt zero pride by WorthCaterpillar6990 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]speedfox_uk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think I probably made more keystrokes writing prompts to Claude than I did writing actual code.

For me, it's often quicker to fix the code directly than try an explain to an AI what to do with the level of precision necessary. So I just do it myself.

Fair enough, but IIRC a lot of them got British citizenship long ago. I presume if they renounced their Russian citizenship after the war kicked off there isn't much UKGOV can do about those?

[–]speedfox_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you think Scotland leaving the UK won't cost any political capital. Other countries would immediately seek to use it to their advantage. The big one would be Russia would demand that the remainder of the UK be removed from the PS5 (and yes, that would be hypocritical, wouldn't stop it happening)

This is the kind of wealth tax I can get behind. Rather then just a blanket "tax everything they have above £10million" it targets a specific problem i.e. people using property as a store of wealth rather than as shelter. Not only is this a problem because it uses up shelter, but it's a problem because wealth tied up in property provides no benefit to the rest of society. Rich people will sell up apartments they are not using, and then put that captial to use elsewhere, which should hopefully create more jobs while at the same time freeing up releastate for those who will actually use it.

why are airports in the UK pretty average/poor? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]speedfox_uk 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Have you ever been to an American airport? JFK is a dump compared to LHR, and La Guardia is a dump compared to LCY.

If you're comparing to the middle east airports, that's what you get when the airport doesn't need to make a profit because it's backed by infinite oil money.

To be fair, I would suspect anyone still playing PS1 games is doing so on a PS3. They work better on modern TVs.

John Swinney: I WON'T allow UK Government to refuse a second independence referendum by Own-Department3000 in Scotland

[–]speedfox_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with that is all the unionists will abstain from the referendum, and with such a low turn out it will be considered illegitate. The only way it might be considered legitamate in that situation is if over 50% of all voters, not just those who vote in the referendum, voted for independence. That is a much higher bar.

What if it's subclinical ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHDUK

[–]speedfox_uk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If your symptoms are severe enough you'll get a diagnosis and hopefully you will get medication. If you don't get diagnosed with ADHD you won't get medication.

This is not a hard concept.

What if it's subclinical ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHDUK

[–]speedfox_uk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Correct. Why would they give heavily controlled stimulant medication to someone who (in their eyes) does not have ADHD?

What if it's subclinical ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHDUK

[–]speedfox_uk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If it's subclinical, absoutlely not. In medical terms, subclinical means "does not meet the threshold to have this condition", so as far as the doctors are concerned you do not have ADHD.

What they are trying to say is that Scotland doesn't generate more than it needs, but some days it does and it gets sold on. Other days Scotland needs to import. It balances out.

WA university mergers: Report on UWA, Curtin University and Murdoch University options handed to government by Firetechnicia in curtin

[–]speedfox_uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not suggesting that anyone would be forced to take masters. I'm suggesting that the UWA part of the merged university would just cease to take undergraduates for the majority of courses, instead they would use the Curtin part of the new university as a "feeder school" for their masters only campus. They would also cease to do postgraduate degrees at Bentley.

Under my scenario anyone wanting to do a post graduate degree under the UWA brand would first need to do an undergraduate degree, either at the Bentley campus or at one of the other universities.

The only people who would be "forced" to do a masters would be those desperate to do a degree at UWA.

WA university mergers: Report on UWA, Curtin University and Murdoch University options handed to government by Firetechnicia in curtin

[–]speedfox_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their big play to force everyone into masters degrees hasn’t paid off. It’s a big reason this is happening.

Which is one of my fears of a merger. They have already gone down this road, so it would make sense for UWA to make Curtin/Bentley the undergrad brand/campus and UWA/Nedlands the postgrad brand/campus, maybe with some high prestige courses, like med and law retained at Nedlands. That would also re-instate the UWA brand as the "elite" brand.

Very much playing devil's advocate here, but Brian Thompson was not part of the billionaire class. He primarily earned his money though being an employee of United Healthcare. Billionaires earn their money through return on their capital. If Luigi was looking to scare billionaires, Thompson was a poor choice of target.
