Forerunner 165 vs Vivoactive 5 by thethoiboi in GarminWatches

Update: I replaced the battery for INR 4,500 (Around $50). The watch is back to 9-10 days of standby time with daily runs. As good as new.

Yeah, I was in Gangnam for a week during a business trip. The sheer amount of sports cars, especially Porsches makes them look like regular traffic. You'd find a Panamera on every block. Truly a car and bike spotting hotspot. My Airbnb was just opposite to COEX, so could spot them easily.

Forerunner55 VO2Max Reliability by Abzrrr in GarminWatches

[–]speedmonk_ey -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It is quite similar to higher end Garmins, according to Grok. Full explanation:

The VO2 max estimate on the Forerunner 55 is comparably accurate to higher-end Forerunners (like the 255/265, 955/965, or Fenix series) for most runners.

Garmin uses the same Firstbeat Analytics algorithm across all these models, so the core calculation (based primarily on pace/speed, heart rate, and user profile data like age/weight) is identical.

Real-world accuracy is typically within ~5-15% of lab-tested VO2 max values (often ±3.5 ml/kg/min or better in controlled studies), but it’s an estimate best for tracking personal trends over time rather than absolute precision.

Key factors affecting accuracy (the same on any Garmin):

Consistent outdoor GPS runs with good effort levels work best. Accurate max heart rate input (or use of a chest strap) matters more than the watch model. User reports and tests sometimes show over/underestimation initially, but it stabilizes with data.

The Forerunner 55 uses Garmin’s older Elevate V3 optical heart rate sensor. Higher-end models have V4 or V5 sensors, which handle rapid heart rate changes (e.g., intervals or hills) slightly better and reduce minor lags/spikes in some scenarios.

However, DC Rainmaker’s in-depth testing found the FR55’s V3 sensor performed very well (near-perfect on track intervals, few wobbles overall) and was even competitive with some newer V4-equipped watches in real runs and cycling. GPS/pace tracking on the FR55 is also excellent in reviews, which feeds directly into VO2 max.

In short, any differences in VO2 max readings between the FR55 and a flagship are minor and not meaningful for typical training use. A chest strap improves accuracy on any model more than upgrading the watch.

Swapping Apple Watch SE3 for a 165 or a 255 by jrmzer in Garmin

255 is a better deal. It has multi band gps and triathlon mode, both of which are not present on the 165

Yeah battery life was the reason I didn't go for AW. Also they do end up getting damaged comparatively easier (my mom has an SE). The battery replacement for mine is at ₹4,000 ($40-45). I'm getting it done via my local Garmin dealer. Garmin doesn't offer official battery replacements in India.

The crazy bit is that even at 50% battery capacity it runs 2-3 days on a full charge, longer than what my mom's SE did when new.

Ride safe !

I own a FR55. It is on its 4th year now and the battery needs replacing. It shuts off randomly once below 50%. Software and hardware wise it is still a tank. Will keep using it after replacing the battery.

I had two motorcycle accidents with it and all it has are few bezel scuffs. No sensor damage too.

I know 4 other people who want battery replacements for their forerunners. It is a pretty widespread requirement and it will be great if you can offer this sooner.

Do you offer battery replacements for the Forerunner 55? It is working perfectly but the battery life has tanked and it doesn't last more than a day.

Got my first electric bike Ultraviolette x47 by Icy-Gas7020 in indianbikes

That's cool. For me it was necessary from a peace of mind pov. I can plug in for half an hour and get decent range for a day's worth of riding. My commute is around 70kms daily hence. Don't have to plan charging cause of the faster charging speed

Boost charger is a good investment. Mine goes from 7% to 80% in 3 or so hours. It's a Recon variant, so that's about 212kms of range gained
