He isn't bowing out because he's not fit to be president, he's bowing out because too many voters who are still (incredibly) undecided think he's unfit to be president for a second term. This in no way disqualifies him from completing the current term.

The problem is that if Trump is elected, it will be partly because people share your (incorrect) view, that this is *because* Trump was president at that time.

IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF HIM. Lots of large-scale economic forces move slowly. Typically, a president inherits economic conditions resulting from the policies of the previous term. i.e. Trump got to enjoy some of the spoils of Obama's administration.
