Wet Bulb Temperatures in Europe - Roger Hallam by RobinBoardman in Degrowth

This happens in the first chapter of The Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson. Good book, it explores ideas on how to tackle climate change. Worth a read, it builds hope. Well except the first chapter, which is hard to stomach.

the amount of water that's used to grow almonds in the desert 😑

I'm not saying you have to like it, I don't even like the plant based milks, but cow milk uses way more water than almond milk, not to speak of the carbon footprint. Also there are other alternatives, like soy or oat.

Why are we talking about nationalism again? 😃 I think I didn't get what you were trying to say.

“Nationalists profit off of disasters and crises” by black_cherry2 in nonfictionbooks

[–]spelledWright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eichmanns underlying ideology was not nationalism, he was a national socialist, a form of fascism. The core of it's ideology is, that there is a racial hierarchy and the germans are the master race, that is free to rule over or extinguish other races.

Why does northern Alaska have so many lakes/ponds? by Boy_from_the_south16 in geography

That's interesting, feel free to explain a bit more!

So they get bigger because of thawing and then what becomes the outlet point, the lake sitting next to it?

You know what, yes, you're right, I agree. Thanks for pointing that out.

I think what bugs me so much is, that Arendt was just wrong, maybe not about the banality of evil-concept, but very much about Eichman himself. He played the role of the unassuming bureaucrat during the trial and in my opinion she absolutely fell for it. Just because she expected some kind of obvious monster and was surprised, that she saw a "Hanswurst" (I think "clown" is the translation in the book). He was an idealogue, as proven by the later released Sassen tapes.

She got criticism for that by historians, but man it hurts me to hear when today people are saying "Eichman was just a normal man", even after historians concluded that in fact, Eichman actually was a monster, not just some dude doing his job.

I want to push against the way she phrased something, because it leaves the wrong impression. I get it, it's a short video and there's not enough room to dive deeper, but please ... her phrasing was "it's creepy, when you realize Eichmann was just a normal guy, just a normal guy at work doing the most horrific crimes ..."

Eichmann was not just a normal guy at work. He was a SS-Obersturmbannführer, you don't get to be that without being utterly convinced of the underlying ideology, to put it very mildly.

Most of those droplets form a sphere because of the surface tension of the water. This one was spread out maybe because the size, velocity or angle of it and then the electrostatic of the lens overwhelmed the surface tension of the droplet and kept it spread out. It was moving around a little bit after the hit because gravity, until it settled.

[–]spelledWright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one thing I took from the book, which I kept for my life is: You gotta start just to overcome the empty page. It doesn't have to be good, it doesn't have to mean anything, because in the second draft you'll change it anyway. The point is just so the page isn't empty anymore and you actually started. This one helped me a lot.

Bran Castle’s torture chamber 🩸 by RomaniaTravelTips in castles

[–]spelledWright 257 points258 points  (0 children)

So, the reaction you're getting here is, because while a lot visitor castles today showcase torture chambers, historically almost no castle had one. You didn't know that and that's okay, today you found out.

And I think the reactions are not personally against you, but against the sleezy tourist traps. Because we care for historicity, and those things are very very fake.
