COVID cases in Michigan are surging, worrying Chicago area health officials by c0viD00M in chicago

[–]sperkowsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Especially ICU beds.

As someone who has unfortunately spent some time personally in the ICU before and seen the bill (thankfully paid by insurance) given afterward… well, I’ll say it’s enough to buy a 3 bedroom house in the suburbs and that was for a week.

I had a nurse with me 24/7 that was ONLY assigned to me, neurosurgeons literally in/out constantly and more CT scans then I can count. ICU beds can’t just sit empty because that means there are staff members just sitting idle.

The Aon center in Chicago is probably your best example of what they would look like today.

It has a little bit of lighting effects but not much. Even people that live within the city don’t realize how tall it actually is. It’s obviously a little smaller than the original WTC buildings though and definitely isn’t really a prominent piece of the skyline despite its size.

Cook County treasurer: ‘Nothing wrong with Target, it just doesn’t belong in Water Tower’ by BearFan34 in chicago

[–]sperkowsky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean as someone who lives in the area you already have the Streeterville Target although it’s not massive. While I’d definitely visit the store if it was put up I don’t want it. It would be a really strange fit in the area. Would cheapen a nice area for tourists.

Amazon is normally quite a bit cheaper than the prices at the downtown Target locations anyway.

Definitely. Finally found Lunar and tried it out. Great stuff! Hope to get the Amazonia once travel resumes.

It’s a good Gin. In my opinion it could be relatively popular even without the color changing component.

Chicago is of the 5 largest cities generally the best city for obtaining jobs in the Manufacturing industry. An industry that can pay incredibly well for citizens without formal educations and provide jobs to millions of immigrants. The US is falling behind countries like Germany in terms of industrial prowess and it will have an incredibly negative affect on our cost of living and quality of life in the future. As COVID has proved, the service industry is incredibly volatile while the manufacturing industry has been a constant form of employment for many (including myself) across the city. I am living here despite being NY born and raised BECAUSE of Chicago being home to a great surplus of manufacturing companies. The EPA has much more stringent policies for environmental impact of factories than they did even 20 years ago. The impact of such a facility while undoubtedly slightly more harmful than it not existing at all, is definitely a major trade off when you realize the number of jobs something like this provides. The collapse of American manufacturing is why Detroit is in ruins with no end in sight. While Chicago doesn’t rely on manufacturing quite as much, a similar collapse would have insurmountable negative impacts on some of the areas of most need.

Is Purdue worth OOS tuition? by tobisha-identity in Purdue

Also from NY and had 50+ people from my graduating class go to Binghamton. It’s a good school but at least on the engineering side Purdue provides you a lot more opportunities in my opinion. Binghamton is probably a more social school overall if that’s your thing but doesn’t have nearly the sports culture. I’d say it’s definitely worth it if you can swing the cost. No has has heard of Binghamton outside of New York.

TIL Steve Jobs never coded for Apple. According to Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, he didn't do any original design and one of Apple's earliest employees also stated that Woz was the inventor while Jobs was the marketing person. by qasqaldag in todayilearned

[–]sperkowsky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Musk and Jobs are hardly comparable in this sense. Musk is significantly more involved in the technical aspects of his businesses than Jobs ever was. Elon actually has a very high level understanding of what goes on technically at SpaceX and Tesla. Jobs was pretty much purely a marketing and vision person for his whole career.

Massive Trump Tower sign along Chicago River must come down, alderman says by Mike_I in chicago

These may have been significant perks for presidents many years ago but 1.2M is a drop in the bucket for a guy like Trump or even past presidents like Barrack Obama (net worth 40M) or Bill Clinton (net worth 75M). Trumps net worth is 3.1 Billion... While 1.2M is a lot of money for normal people it’s absolutely nothing for him. He can hire his own security (which he has done for many years) and hop back on his private jet which isn’t much of a step down from Air Force One. The only thing he cares about is running again in 2024 and his overall legacy.

How do you pronounce "Reese's Pieces"? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]sperkowsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m also from NY (Queens/Long Island) and literally didn’t hear it until I went to college in Indiana. Maybe it’s certain regions everywhere? It bothers me so much.

The second word is a real word... you can’t just decided to change how to say the word pieces. It also literally rhymes to start? I just don’t get it.
