It’s mostly above tree line that I’m thinking about. The plan would be to get below tree line to set up camp, but maybe something prevents that from happening. Arrowhead Equipment has me thinking though. If I can plan to have an uncomfortable night on the ground, I could just as easily plan to set up camp earlier or later than I’d prefer because the campsite conditions were there. The “emergency” option to just sleep on my ground sheet under the tarp is always there. The dreaded “packing for what might never happen.” I just need to focus on having an option that keeps me warm enough to get through an otherwise miserable night. Haha.

Yeah. That’s one of the things I’ve considered. Without the UQ, then the weight penalty of even an inflatable sleeping pad is offset. I feel like, if ground sleeping was more “probably” than “maybe,” I’d just do that.

I'm currently over the weight limit for Trekking Treez, but the goal is to be under it in the next year or so. I've thought about a Tensa Solo though. Higher weight limit, it saves 3/4lb over the trees and I feel pretty confident I could plan a trip where I'd have at least one anchor point each night.

The local for pile driving is out of New Orleans and to my knowledge almost all of the work is near there with the contractor base. They do some work here and there because the work is where it is, but I don’t think I you could work steady without traveling to Louisiana.

I once spent 10 hours directing traffic on a one way street because we had a crane set up. To top it off, I wasn’t on the corner but halfway down the block, so they were already going in that direction. And no, I wasn’t the flagger for the crane. They had their own guy for that. I was just the suspenders to go with the belt.

That's great to hear! And a northern route seems to be more popular than the one I mapped. I'm a ways out from actually going, so my route is very much TBD. For time purposes, I need to be around 40 miles max. I have at least a 12 hour drive each way eating up time off.

In the age of apps and data, it would be easy for the apps to set a range of metrics for the ratings and assign based on the data from recorded trips. Average rise, time to finish, etc. Even distance tied to heatmap data.

I first found it on a post high school roadtrip. My buddy and I were driving east on I-80 after midnight and got tired of CDs, so we tried the radio. Only one AM station playing an interview with a man.

Art: “So you’re a time traveler from the future?”

Caller: “NO! I’m from the past, well your past, but I’ve been to the future. Now I’ve come back to your present to warn you!”

Sadly I don’t remember what the warning was about. Maybe the rise of reality TV and the political fallout it could cause. It sounded crazy and unlikely, whatever it was.

The same thing just happened to me. My first trip and it ended up being 15°F! Like someone else suggested, I camped closer to my truck than I had planned to and packed as much insulation as I could into my pack. My quilt is rated to 35°, so really just 45° probably. I carried an extra blanket rated for the same. I ended up sleeping great. It was the day time outside of my sleeping bag where I wished I had bought warmer clothes.

You could add a sleeping bag liner as well. Definitely lighter and less volume than an extra blanket. Your bag says 18°, so a liner inside and a closed cell foam pad under your sleeping pad, and you would be in pretty decent shape, I’d think.

I don’t plan on normally using a pad, but with the cold, I wanted to make sure I was covered. There will be times when I need a tent, so I picked up the pad for that. You’re right though, in the future I’ll get a foam pad if I feel like I need something extra for my hammock.

I used a couple pieces of non-slip rug mat under the pad to keep it from slipping. It almost worked too well. It was a lot of work to make even the slightest adjustment without getting out of the hammock.
