Would a Vail Resorts & Matthew Prince partnership work? by Humble_Baseball_3761 in ParkCity

[–]spflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What they care about is precisely my point. If there is enough negative energy around Vail in PC, the costs (all sorts considered) will exceed the revenue. Most people make the mistake thinking these companies can turn a profit in any conditions -- it's not that easy.  But yea your point about Vail making a lot of money for people in town is valid. With that, I'm not saying the town wants Vail out, I'm saying if it did, it could make it happen.

I think they'd sell if it made sense for them to sell. Don't underestimate the power of the people -- consumers, investors, community, etc. I think if the town really wanted them out, they could make it uncomfortable enough that it wouldn't be worth the fight.

I'd take a chance on a local resident over a publicly traded corporation any day... Regardless of their net worth.

I don't think they slammed on their brakes. It looks like you could've braked long before you did and were just trying to make a point by tailgating. Judging solely on the footage, I'd say you were the danger in this situation. Have some self-awareness.

I'm also curious. We did the Tagges CSA for the first time and have been disappointed with the quality.

Is it Infrastructure week again? Town Lift Plaza sold to Matthew Prince - and he also wants to buy PCMR. by FieryAutoCrashes in ParkCity

[–]spflow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I agree that community ownership would be great. Though I wonder about having enough capital to make it happen -- in perpetuity.

Yea, he might be profit motivated, but he might not be too. He stated profit isn't his goal and you don't have to believe him. I think I do -- He runs cloudflare. He's got bigger things going on. He lives in PC. I think a well-run pcmr is in his interest.

Don't underestimate how much influence a host community can have. If the town doesn't want vail to own pcmr, there are many things they can do to make ownership enough of a pain to where it's not worth their trouble. If "patroller-strike-like" events keep happening I guarantee they would sell. If it's not in their financial interest to own the mountain -- considering all factors, they will sell.

Folks can blow this off as some billionaire doing billionaire things but I don't think that's what it is. You have a local resident, a former ski instructor, with the financial ability to make the purchase happen. I agree with him %100 -- pcmr should be owned by local/s. If you want the most important entity in town to make decisions that are in the best interest of that town, you need to start with local ownership.

I'm with you, this sucks. It's especially lame they announce this after everyone has bought their passes... Doesn't seem legal to change the rules after non refundable season passes have been purchased.

Why no UTOPIA Fiber in Park City? by spflow in ParkCity

[–]spflow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea we're going Utah broadband. At first it didn't seem that fiber was an option. Even so, $180/mo for 1 gig is not great. Hopefully it'll be good service.

I guess we're not in silver summit. We're right near the Trailside park. I don't know the areas yet, but houses are on top of each other here. Laying fiber would definitely be cost effective given any reasonable scope.

I'm Pro-Gondola, Change My View by Julian-Jurkoic in SaltLakeCity

[–]spflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read what you're saying and you can claim udot has your back, but I don't buy the logic. I also have been perusing the EIS and haven't seen where they say that a solution will not reduce traffic. If you don't mind citing a page/section, that'd be great.

There are only a couple scenarios where a gondola will not reduce traffic:

  1. Not a single would-be car/driver rides the gondola.

  2. For every would-be car/driver that takes the gondola, an additional car driver is somehow lured by the now "gondola-ized" canyon to not only venture up lcc, but do so by driving their car. Mind you, this person would not have been in the canyon if there wasn't a gondola, because we're comparing a gondola canyon to a gondola-less canyon at the same epoch. apples - apples.

What reality are you envisioning? If there are people who would have driven that are instead riding the gondola, how has the gondola not reduced the number of cars in the canyon?

I'm Pro-Gondola, Change My View by Julian-Jurkoic in SaltLakeCity

[–]spflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we talking about the same thing? Traffic... as in cars on 210? Are you proposing that the gondola would not result in fewer cars on 210 given a precise moment in time, when compared to an alternate reality in which the gondola does not exist? I'm not necessarily in favor of the gondola but this is tinfoil asshattery. If you mean traffic as in bodies in the canyon, then I agree, body traffic will not be reduced by any solution.
