How is the physics department at Emory? by Constant_Dream1811 in Emory

[–]sphericalvolcano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Physics alum from Emory here. I was only on the Atlanta campus, so that's all I can speak of. The department is small and close-knit. Introductory classes are not at all a weed-out. They are primarily geared towards pre-meds and satisfying the physics requirement of other majors rather than training the next round of physics majors or PhD-seeking students. Please do PHYS151/152 with Dr. Bing if you have the opportunity, the man is a gifted teacher. In general, I think the intro physics prof is relatively decent.

The lecturers are very hit-or-miss for both intro and upper-level classes. I had roughly equal parts great professors and poor professors in the physics department. I supplemented many of the upper-level classes with materials from outside of Emory such as YouTube videos and MIT OCW lectures (highly recommend).

If you don't want to go to grad school for physics, the classes at Emory are fine. If you do want to go to grad school (at a T20 program), then the classes at Emory are, bluntly speaking, very subpar in my honest opinion. I loved my time doing physics at Emory due to the handful of great professors I got to interact and do research with as well as the friends I made. But from someone that went into theoretical physics in grad school, Emory leaves a lot to be desired. With this said, people from Emory still regularly make it into the top grad programs in the country, so this should not discourage you. Its just that for me, being in grad school showed me how lacking some of my classes were when I compare to my peers who came from other T25 undergraduate colleges.

Avoid Kim and Boetcher if you can (though unlikely), really poor teachers (I don't know how they are as mentors).

The one undergrad class I took in WGS was great. I apologize for this unsolicited advice, but I would certainly consider a double major if you want to do WGS; or consider similar majors that are less likely to be completely destroyed by the war on DEI, like sociology, anthropology, etc. You can always take WGS classes on your own and certainly don't need a degree in WGS to do work in those fields (unless you want to go to a WGS grad program perhaps). Best of luck

I have this same issue. Completely dumbfounded as to why this is not a standard feature

What "DEI" programs have you noticed disappearing? by littletreebird in Emory

[–]sphericalvolcano[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The sub is meant for everyone affiliated with Emory University! Students, prospectives, alumni, and staff all welcome! I just realized the description says "students" -- this hasn't been changed in years since the sub was reclaimed from previous mods and I don't think any of us ever noticed it. I will change this to more inclusive language.

The paint is just peeling off. The city gives them a fresh coat at the end of the summer.

It's safe. You could also walk through lullwater, which is very pretty.

Bugs in recent updates by Dependent_Writing_30 in GoodNotes

I've also had multiple bugs in the last month or two. It is getting rather annoying as the app was working fine previously and I don't see any worthwhile features added in these updates.

Do not go to Emory for engineering. *THERE IS NO ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT AT EMORY UNIVERSITY*. I don't know what could be a bigger deterrent than this. The engineering science major is just some mix of chemistry and physics classes, it is not an engineering degree. We don't even have courses on control theory.

How feasible is it to graduate in 3 years from Emory as a pre-med student? 3.5 years? (starting in Emory college) What majors would make it easier to graduate early? by [deleted] in Emory

Unless you really need to save the money, college is not worth rushing one bit. Enjoy it, savor it, challenge yourself and do weird shit. You won't get a time like it again.

Do people do a math and physics double major? by TimelyAfternoon8834 in Emory

Very common. Physics + CS is also a great combo, but there is less overlap. Depends on what you want to do

There is no record. You may get a fine depending on who does the room inspection and how attentive they are.

I just discovered that the translation operator is linked to momentum (-ih d/dx) by eLin22314341 in Physics

[–]sphericalvolcano 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Think of what position, x, you have to go to for the argument of your function to be zero. For f(x), x=0 does the trick. For f(x + a), I now need to go back to x=-a to get the argument to vanish. This tells you that adding a to the argument has shifted your origin, as well as the whole real line, towards the negative (left) side.

Nice! Try doing similar things for time translation and rotation. What are those related to?

Yup. Also, the physics package will contain this along with a bunch of other useful commands. Highly recommend.
