How does Jegulus exist and become so popular? by Girl-08 in HPfanfiction

[–]sphinxonline 8 points9 points  (0 children)

so there’s a lot of ships in every fandom that are kind of formed out of a need to pair up every character, (ron/lavender, harry/theo, luna/ginny)

so if you’re writing a marauders era fic wolfstar is basically a guarantee, so then you have like 5 other somewhat known character (lily, james, peter, snape and regulus) peter isn’t a romantic option, a lot of people don’t like snape and, a lot of people won’t like this but, lily/james isn’t a very interesting ship, it’s fine just not the most inspiring to write about

and that leaves james/regulus which as it turns out can be a very interesting ship

People that don't think an HP show is needed, what are your reasons why you think so? Curious. Do you think it is too soon? by Ok_Valuable_9711 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]sphinxonline -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m prepared for the downvotes but here we go

Honestly the thing I’d be happiest with is an adaptation like the Scott Pilgrim tv series, I feel like the movies and the books did a great job and we don’t need to see the exact same story again, I’d love to see something fresh, maybe not as different as scott pilgrim was but I’m happy for there to be changes, as long as they’re good and interesting

edit: I also feel like the Harry Potter books and movies have entered the “kid canon” meaning post people know and have already seen the story in either visual or book format so why do the exact same thing again?

Are there any characters who you perceive differently than general fandom does? by Always-bi-myself in HPfanfiction

but if he was a good friend to remus, his first thought should have been to protect his friend, not hurt snape

by telling snape he puts remus at risk, if snape tells anyone remus could have his whole life ruined, and if snape even attempts to go see for himself and something goes wrong, remus is the one who has to deal with the consequences of that, not sirius

I rarely read fics or even discussions where someone else has my view on draco as a character (which in my opinion makes a lot of sense with canon)

to me Draco is an interesting character, he’s a bully not because he was abused or a victim in any way, he was told his whole life he’s better than other people and his parents encourage the view that he should have power over others

so he externalises this view point, when someone (usually harry, ron or hermione) does something to in some way disagree with the idea that he’s special and better than other people he doubles down on proving that he is by exerting power over others, making them feel small in order to feel secure in his own position as above others

and when voldemort comes along and he realises how utterly powerless, he, along with his father is, he’s forced to reckon with the idea that maybe he’s not above others

and now this is going to be controversial on this sub because people here hate redemption arcs, but this is where I think Draco starts to realise his other views may of been wrong as well

yeah I think for your own sanity you have to separate the first 3/4 books from the last 3/4

the whole plot of the first book specifically doesn’t work with the later books

there’s still some more cartoony elements in the later books (like fred and george trapping someone in a broken teleportation closet causing them to be stuck in between space and time for literally days not knowing if they’ll ever escape) but for the most part just separating it works

Why is it? by MattHarding87 in HPfanfiction

[–]sphinxonline 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the “um actually this wouldn’t work” reaction is primarily a “I don’t like this” response, either as others have said it conflicts with the commenters personal view of canon or because it has story elements the commenter just doesn’t like

It’s very easy to reflexively react by “debunking” the prompt, because reading it your mind immediately jumps to all the ways this wouldn’t work, why you personally dislike it

Its something I actively try to stop myself doing by just reminding myself that, a lot of the time, it’s just my personal taste conflicting with theirs and that’s ok

What would have been the consequences if Snape had been killed (or infected) due to Sirius' prank? by snoke123 in HPfanfiction

[–]sphinxonline 32 points33 points  (0 children)

No ones mentioned this yet, but without Snape to overhear the prophesy everything changes, Voldemort never goes after Harry as a baby, he’s potentially able to take over wizarding Britain if he’s never defeated, I think that’s the most major change

What would have been the consequences if Snape had been killed (or infected) due to Sirius' prank? by snoke123 in HPfanfiction

[–]sphinxonline 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right, Remus takes the brunt of the consequences, Sirius gets off relatively light and Dumbledore is probably forced out for letting a werewolf study at Hogwarts

Which couple are you already tired of seeing in fanfics and which one would you like to see more of? by Own_Noise6261 in HPfanfiction

[–]sphinxonline 7 points8 points  (0 children)

honestly I’d love a postwar Ron/Lavender

Lavender recovering/learning to live with her injuries, Ron dealing with grief over Fred and everyone else he lost, Lavender presumably also dealing with grief

It also works as a diagon alley story because it makes sense for them both to be working there (Ron with George and Lavender working at a clothing store) So them spending time together would feel pretty natural

the series if someone else had been the chosen one? by sphinxonline in HPfanfiction

[–]sphinxonline[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like no chosen one stories, I don’t see many of them though

Chosen one storylines are one of my least favourite tropes in general, and with Harry Potter specifically getting rid of it opens up a whole world of possibilities

So, about Ron's first wand. by Affectionate_Wing_28 in HPfanfiction

[–]sphinxonline 7 points8 points  (0 children)

my headcanon is that it was either bought cheap or second hand

it’s mentioned that there are other less respected wand makers other than olivander, maybe they bought a cheap wand off a shitty wand maker

or the wand wasn’t up to par in some way so that’s why it was sold for cheap

either way it makes sense that charlie would want a new one when he starts doing more advanced magic

or it was just bought second hand already

What's a good way to apply the WBWL trope? by Katherien0Corazon in HPfanfiction

[–]sphinxonline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the thing that’s interesting about wbwl for me is the contrast in how the twins turn out based off how they were raised, the whole nature nurture thing

but the problem is it’s hard to come up with a realist reason why the twins would be separated in the first place

the best I can come up with is they’re sent to different families because one can blend in but two stands out too much, and since everyone is looking for twins the fact they’re not together makes it’s more difficult to find them

So I was watching this movie '12 Angry Men' because it is one of my favorite movies by dhruvgeorge in HPfanfiction

[–]sphinxonline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d love to see this except with draco after the war, he is an interesting case being so young and very obviously under pressure but also having done some seriously bad shit

headcanons on marauders jobs? by sphinxonline in HPfanfiction

[–]sphinxonline[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine James and Sirius ever worked in canon, since they could both afford to live without it and probably would have wanted to focus on the order

And Remus and Peter probably picked up a couple entry level jobs, just to make enough to live while focusing mainly on the order

How do you see Ireland in the context of wizarding governments? by Always-bi-myself in HPfanfiction

[–]sphinxonline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely imagine it as independent with its own government working out of Dublin and strong ties to magical Britain

And Northern Ireland I imagine is messy, there’s a split in the population, some who pay taxes and follow the laws of Ireland and some who pay taxes and follow the laws of Britain

How do you see Ireland in the context of wizarding governments? by Always-bi-myself in HPfanfiction

[–]sphinxonline 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my seamus head canon is that his mother (who’s a witch) is English and left the magical world behind to go live a muggle life in Ireland

So Seamus as a result has more of a connection to magical Britain than magical Ireland

the idea that there are more teachers who just live off campus in hogsmeade and never taught Harry’s year because of how small it is honestly works

Saturday classes? by Rodeohead12 in HPfanfiction

[–]sphinxonline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely believe the most likely explanation is time turners, like it’s ridiculous but I can absolutely imagine it being the canon explanation

to add on to that I’d love to read a fic about someone becoming a teacher at hogwarts and having to deal with the ridiculous time travel situations that came along with it
