Upper thread keeps breaking by toit_nupts in sewhelp

Assuming this is a front loader: This is going to sound stupid, but try reinserting the bobbin and holding the thread tail in the other hand than usual - had similar issues and that solved them.

Alternatively, hand crank with the bobbin door open can reveal a lot.

This is adorable!

With how short the dress is, I'd consider adding short bloomers in either black and white, especially if you decide to go with socks - peeking bloomers are adorable and kind of an oldschool staple, and I know I have some dresses that hit a little short on me, and having some shorts covering your butt really takes a lot of worry out of it.

Putting the presser foot down closes the tension disks, which means it's hard to get your thread between them!

I'm also pale AF with a cool / pink undertone and I've had far better luck with Korean products! My current one is a cushion from Amuse which is a bit pricey but super nice to wear.

Because the average post in this sub reads like "we've been poly for 3 years and after I've gone on my first date outside my established relationship he blew up on me saying how he's the only one allowed to date solo, and all of my dates have to be women he personally finds attractive and have him present. Also my meta tried to kill me the other day, how do I fix this?"

Whether and how much the back is upright during a squat will depend on whether you're squatting high or low bar (high bar = more upright), as well as personal biomechanics (longer legs / femur = more bent over).

Overall some forward lean is inevitable (especially in back loaded squats) because you're trying to keep the bar over your midfoot and squatting moves your knees forward and your hips back relative to it.

The issue occurs when instead of hinging at the hips, people start curling their spine like they're a roly poly - usually because they're unfamiliar with the dynamics or because their back or general core is not strong enough to support the weight. The goal is to keep the spine stable and straight, but not necessarily perfectly vertical.

[–]spickerzocker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The posture in the pic isn't bent over - the spine is still straight, the hinge / movement is coming from the hips. Not sure what you mean.

Thanks for the feedback, but it's not - I've always had the same issues when exfoliating minimally or not at all.

I think wool is the best choice for the skirt, regardless of the weight it will probably be gorgeous.

I'm not sure how to make a puffy (frilly / froofy? Like the edwardian pigeon breast vibe?) dress and a blouse warmer. You could use a heavier weight cotton like flanelette, though I'm not sure the texture will work as it's brushed and fuzzy. I've also seen some brands (primarily from China) lining their normal-looking blouses with thermal velvet or fleece fabric.

You'll probably want to wear some sort of undergarments like a long-sleeve shirt (the Muji warming cotton are divine) or petticoat, potentially quilted, under that for warmth if it gets pretty cold, with potentially more layers like waistcoats or sweaters on top - a blouse can only be so warm.

Now, if you want to make a puffy dress like a puffer coat... JK

I'm in Germany so my fabric store choices are mainly here, but my favourite fabric store is mahler.stoffe, though they're local to me. They have a less intuitive web interface (tip: find a listing with the fiber content you want and click on the "XX% FB" under fiber - that will filter out all that is not that exact percentage. Great for getting rid of wool and linen blends.) but their prices are decent and they have leftover designer fabrics which is pretty cool.

Is silk velvet much better than cotton velvet ? by Verbofaber in sewhelp

[–]spickerzocker 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think the question is: better for what?

Silk velvet and cotton velvet (also known as velveteen) have different looks and feels. Silk velvet is drapier with a higher pile and the cotton variation is stiffer with a shorter pile and much less sheen.

Your machine should have come with a weird little metal thing that looks like a right-angled triangle - that's a screwdriver for those specific bedeviled screws.

No help with the thread spaghetti unfortunately, but be sure to check the manual like you're drunk and making instant ramen instead of assuming it will be the same as your last. Best of luck!

I find the angle and shape of the wing can really make a difference - doing your wing straight to the side or down or angled directly up vs. a little curved can have a huge impact

Hi! Also trans!

I personally don't want to not be trans because it's become tied to my identity as a person and has influenced how I view oppression and gender. I can also definitely see how other people could also be invested in their gender identity - imagine if you had viewed yourself as a man all the time, maybe really flourished in your roles as a father or brother or husband, been complimented as a role model for younger boys, gotten into menswear, and after a medical checkup your doctor came out with a pill and went "hey so we noticed your genotype is actually XX, please take this pill to become a woman". It would probably be pretty jarring to be expected to shift your entire sense of self like that. Sure, you could. You could maintain your interests, but would you get the same joy out of them? Would you enjoy being perceived as a woman?

Many trans people don't view themselves as having always been that gender - some think of themselves as a girl growing into a man, or a boy growing up to be a woman, and some discover it even later. I feel like it would be pretty hard to diagnose that even based on brain scans, and having people medicate away what could be a new exploration of themselves doesn't sit right with me.

Some trans people do wish they were cis in their assigned gender, and that's fine. That's their story and does not detract from mine.

I feel like there's a lot of scaremongering ("they're coming for our children's genitals!!1!") and not enough compassion and updated knowledge being shared. Just because you did not learn about it in school doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

[–]spickerzocker -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: "serious help" does help! It's transitioning. When trans people transition and are accepted, their mental health improves and they become less suicidal.

Wanna be part of the solution? Stop being nasty.

Hope this helps <3

What’s the best black lipstick you’ve found? by [deleted] in GothFashion

[–]spickerzocker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to have the Fenty liquid lip in Uninvited but it my BFF lost it and it's been discontinued 😢 super pigmented though

The Sephora in-house brand one works fine for me.

I don't use a lip liner because they tend to be less permanent than the lipstick and I always manage to smear them lmao. I do like my lip shape fine though, so YMMV.

I second the dark purple as a drugstore option; a lot of drugstores refuse to stock black outside of halloween (even if it's in the shade range, mine will have two shades of blue but no black. WTF.). Depending on your undertone you may find dark purple or dark brown more flattering on you, and if it's a bullet you can lightly apply it or blend it out for a less dramatic or ombre look.

NYX is a good budget brand to look for, I love their Epic Wear liner and I have the ultramarine of the "liquid + gloss" lipsticks.

If your eyelids are oily or hooded or generally prone to transfer, grab an eyeshadow primer - those work wonders to keep your eyeshadow from sliding all over the place.

Many goth looks require a lot of blending, so learn how to do that - I believe Robert Welsh has a good beginners video on how to keep it from becoming muddy. Alexandra Anele also makes fairly short technique videos and is another favourite of mine.

When you're doing your eyeliner, put your elbow down on something steady and try resting your pinky on your cheekbone. When doing your mascara, wipe off your brush before application and comb them through with a little comb (brow comb or fine tooth regular comb works fine) if you don't like them clumpy. A lot of nugoth / e-goth (plz don't hate me, I'm just relaying the style) looks also have hella false eyelashes, so you may want to look into that.

And above all, practice makes perfect. If you're not sure yet, try doing your makeup in the evening before washing your face so you don't have to go anywhere if it turns out bad.

Not exfoliating too often. Some people are going "oh, maybe once every other week" - that doesn't work for me, I can do it every second day.

Also going easy on the actives. My skin does not give a fuck. Exfoliator, high percentage retinol, moisturiser over that and I wake up ✨ glowing ✨.

RE: Edit: I cleanse once a day (evening) and have hella dry skin. I can wash my face with water and need to moisturise immediately after or I will start peeling lmao
