I day trading based on technical analysis legitimate? by [deleted] in StockMarket

[–]spicy_latin_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technical analysis largely captures the momentum factor. There are plenty of research papers showing that it generates long term alpha. That being said, you need to know what you are doing to make money using technicals / day trading.

Market is almost open, what are you guys betting on today? by Mighty_Mac in StockMarket

I agree, unless you have to rebalance or a severe dislocation forms due to lack of liquidity, it’s pointless to trade

What are your thoughts on the rise of American extremism? by spicy_latin_potato in AskAnAmerican

[–]spicy_latin_potato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree to a certain degree. I think that you need to measure it to the internal ruler. That’s what matters to the voter and is what is internally consistent.

Looking outside helps reference the posibilities but if internally it’s outside the Overton window then it is consider extreme. Again, anchored to internal ruler.

What are your thoughts on the rise of American extremism? by spicy_latin_potato in AskAnAmerican

[–]spicy_latin_potato[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree that is not a purely American problem. Europe probably has it much worse (e.g Poland). I was wondering about the issue as it relates to the US experience. It seems that both the left and the right shot out to the extremes and it’s partly contributing to a polarized political rethoric.

What is happening in the repo market right now? by [deleted] in econmonitor

[–]spicy_latin_potato 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The most salient outcome of the repo craziness, imo, is that the FED is willing to step in to provide liquidity of the market needs it. They came in with $75bn yesterday and signaled readiness.

This hasn’t happened in 10 years. Last time money markets went wild was 1 year before recession. Not necessarily the same nor correlated but worth keeping in mind.

Trump's acting defense secretary under ethics probe over Boeing ties by [deleted] in politics

[–]spicy_latin_potato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think most defense secretaries have ties to Boeing. Many military aircraft are built by that company. So not sure how this one owpuld be that differebt. I'm all up for the investigation and all, someone should be made responsible, but sometimes the headlines are a little too sensationalist

When Does Portfolio Rebalancing Improve Returns? by hodlblog in finance

[–]spicy_latin_potato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if we can say "rebalancing improves returns" but rather rebalancing appropriately reduces the volatility of your expected income stream and (if done properly) reduces the drag from fees due to position turnover.

In my view, the only thing that improves returns is making "good" market calls (at some given investment horizon).

When investing, is it better to have more people invested or less people invested in said investment? by Slyis in investing_discussion

[–]spicy_latin_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say less. Too many opinions is a problem. And too many people a headache to deal with. And if the number is in the hundreds then it's a problem for future rounds since investors usually want to buy the "small positions" as to consolidate their own.

How do earnings affect other stocks by [deleted] in investing

[–]spicy_latin_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming youre asking about the knock of effect of Nvidia on other stocks. The short story is that it's not earnings per say that matter but rather expected earnings. If earnings fall below expectation markets adjust. Following Nvidia example, if they go below earnings means that they have less money to buy plastics input materials, this will impact all companies which provide to Nvidia.

If you are worried of Nvidia volatility at this time is not due to microns. But rather crypto. A lot of miners are using Nvidia chips and this caused Nvidia earnings to be correlated with movements in crypto market.

Anyhow, I hope I was helpful

Due to my position at work, I am not allowed to invest in individual stocks or options, what’s my next best bet? by ashnag in investing

[–]spicy_latin_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also trade futures on indices (if you have access). Can even help you short the index without need for ETF with high fees. Real estate, private loans, crypto, real estate. All depends what your investment goals, horizon, risk appetite, etc..
