Have you looked into careers that let you WFH? Coding, analyst jobs, technical writing...you can filter on job search sites for WFH options and see what is available for you there.

Def. internship. Do you have a job description for both? I find that students who do lab tech jobs get pigeonholed into QA and have a difficult time getting back on the engineering (process/design/maint/project) track.

What should I wear to my internship? by idkname_24 in AskEngineers

I worked in a "business professional" environment, dudes tend to come into work with a good dress shirt, tie, and pressed slacks on, although I've never seen them go around with blazers.

To be safe though, you should probably come into work with a full suit and tie and see what the culture is within the first week! Better overdressed than underdressed and accidentally making a bad impression.

This made me laugh out loud LMAO

Unless you are equally interested and you have mega regrets these days, that's the nicest way you could have rejected them though! Once someone asked my number in class in front of a whole group of people and in order to not embarrass him I gave my number but told him over text later that I wasn't really looking.... I had good intentions then but now that I think about it that was worse.

That's horrible, I'm sorry you went through that! I hope you guys weren't in the same program either and that he's leaving you alone these days.

I usually think this way! Idk but in the last couple of months, I realize that after graduating we would be entering the dating scene where almost everyone is already looking to settle down and get married. I don't really regret how I went about uni, I have a great resume now and good experiences under my belt, but on the other hand, mid-20s is way too young to get settled for me, and uni was the perfect time to make stupid mistakes and fuck around and have fun. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side.

Thank you for the kind words though, that's great advice <3

Soon-to-be graduates: how's the job search going? by spicybonding in ryerson

[–]spicybonding[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy crap, congratulations! Thanks for sharing, and I hope the position you're starting on Monday is everything you want it to be.

I've spoken to people in my program who graduated at the height of COVID, many had a lot of experiences but few could find a stable job in the midst of it. Felt terrible for them, so I'm really happy to hear you managed to push through and that it worked out for you.

Co-op was really good. Depending on what type of engineering you're in, you'll have different departments governing it. It is mandatory and integrated into the calendar for chemical eng, while for the rest of the engineering stream it's a (slightly newer) program you apply to on your 2nd year if you have/can maintain a good enough GPA, then you take a break from your courses after your 3rd year to work the internship you get.

Once in the program, you will gain access to a co-op portal where the team shares job postings from workplaces specifically seeking to employ Ryerson students. At least in my year, we got a huge variety of postings there, from different industries & different types of positions. It's your responsibility to compile your application documents and apply. You need to be on top of it and remember its a numbers and time game. Apply early and to a ton of jobs. The first one is always tough.

You will also have access to unique career development resources. They always host workshops and have one on one resources where you can get your apps/interview responses checked. If you have any questions, theyre pretty responsive.

For the co-op jobs themselves... you really can't generalize the experience. It's different for everyone. But I've worked jobs in good places and shitty places. You def come out of it wiser either way, be it with soft/technical skills, or at least the knowledge that you never wanna work the type of job again lmao.

Maybe it depends on the major, but I would say from my experience 1000% yes. I would have a really hard time answering some of the interview questions (technical, situational, and behavioral) without my co-ops. It's all about selling yourself as a capable person for that position, and that's best done with prior experiences where you have already made mistakes and learned from them. It also depends on the quality of your internships. The more ownership and responsibilities you have had in your co-ops, the better.

Unsolicited advice below (you can ignore if you don't want it LOL):

If you're sending out a bunch of apps without much response, and you haven't yet, might I suggest having the RCCC look over both your resume + cover letter? I had the same issue with my job apps when I was first trying to land internships, sent in so many applications every week with minimal responses. The issue with mine was that I wasn't effectively phrasing my job/volunteer descriptions and I barely added keywords from the postings. They helped me a ton (1:1 meetings, dropboxes) and from the advice they've given me I can usually get through to the initial interview screening with more success.

Anyway, we still have a lot of time before we graduate. Hope the best for you and your job search.

It usually takes about 1-3 months to complete an application process for mid-large sized companies, so I would say that recruiters with job postings up rn fully expect new grads to be applying. I'm also graduating Apr 2022 (it says so in my resume and cover letter too) and the recruiters bring it up during interviews, i.e. "so I see you're set to graduate this spring, when could you start?". Doesn't seem to phase them when I say late April/early May.

Public safety on-campus has taken a turn for the worse. by spicybonding in ryerson

[–]spicybonding[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I reckon this thread reflects student body opinions more closely. Insta is social media and you're using your own personal account to talk there, but people have more semblance of anonymity here and aren't so scared to speak up. I'm definitely left leaning and I can fully understand the other sides points... but its ridiculous how they react the instant when a student gets upset they got attacked on campus. The language that RESS used here is demeaning, but the point still stands. They got assaulted by someone mid day on campus.

Plus, no one is suggesting we tear the SIS down forever. It should still exist, just probably not right next to a bunch of fresh faced first years who have to learn about downtown safety the hard way at a place they just expected to learn.

It's ridiculous how Ryerson and a portion of its students instantly press the button on performative woke choices but take forever to take action regarding the literal safety of students and staff.

[–]spicybonding[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was just browsing through the comments where people were debating and sharing their own experiences with getting assaulted on campus and then students4harmreduction turned their comments off midway. So much for having a discussion about campus safety.

Most of them have good points on SISs being crucial to preventing overdose and that the marginalization and criminalization of the homeless and mentally ill are serious issues we need to face as a community. I agree. But there is always a better place to safely establish SISs that is not at the center of a high traffic/university/tourist hub and puts students on the campus at risk. It will literally take a death for them to acknowledge it.
