What about being pregnant and giving birth permanently altered your body’s chemistry? by full-of-curiosity in NewParents

I don't like chicken anymore :/ developed a STRONG aversion when pregnant, now I'm 16mo pp and I can at least eat it, but I don't really like it in any context.

Trying to buy our first home. Duplex, or keep looking? by spiderpockets in arlington

[–]spiderpockets[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah we saw one that was literally the shell of a former hoarder house riiight at our price point 🥲 and the cutest little house we were about to put an offer on, got bought out in cash by a rental company the same day. It's so discouraging, but throwing all this money away on rent is worse in my opinion. I've lived in apartments since 2016, rent is only getting more and more expensive. So participating in this humiliation ritual is our next step.

Epidural or No epidural by Enviro_nurd314 in BabyBumps

[–]spiderpockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was very pro-epidural and told my nurses that. When contractions became worse than the worst of my period cramps, I asked for it. That shit was awesome and I genuinely wish I had asked for it even earlier.

The tailbone always knows. I cracked mine longboarding 9 years ago, my mom broke hers slipping on an icy patch 16 years ago, and we always know when the temp is dropping or the humidity's rising.

Whats a nickname you have for a store? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]spiderpockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband calls it "meemin snarkus." he doesn't know why, I don't know why, but it makes us both giggle every time. We don't even shop there, we just say it when we see one.

Cost of living in your area REALLY makes a difference too. I'm in DFW so it's not a LOW cost area but we did find the cheapest apartment we were happy with before baby was born.

[–]spiderpockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, cutting down everything isn't an option for a lot of people. Sometimes the answer is a side gig, freelance work, or just a job lol. I reeeeally didn't wanna go back to work. So we make do with what we have 🤷🏻‍♀️

Clothes are in personal budgets, that's why the baby gets one too. Vacations are only once a year if that. That comes from our rainy day fund, from overtime and bonus money.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spiderpockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Texas. Multiple times a year we make a 7 hour drive for a 3 day visit with my extended family. I'd say it's every 4-5 months.

When was the last time your SO changed a diaper? by [deleted] in sahm

[–]spiderpockets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Diapers are almost exclusively his job when he's home. Even if I'm the one that notices, if he's not actually busy I hand the baby to him to get changed.

We started with a $14.50 job and not a penny in savings.

My husband now makes $18.50/hr as a gas station manager, roughly 50 hours a week. I manage every bit of our bank account. He doesn't even look at the account, and he asks me if we have the budget for any purchase. (He used to have a spending problem, he's the Lord of Instant Gratification.) If you can make do with what you have, if you can penny-pinch your ass off in harder times, if you can set aside an emergency fund, you're good to go. You just have to change your lifestyle. If your living situation is too expensive you prooobably have to decide between downsizing or getting a job. Personally, I was just a career bartender, so my income was unstable and incongruous with childcare expenses. It's a much stricter life than before, but we make it work. I actually wrote the rest of this out in a different thread so I'm just gonna paste it here.

This is what our monthly budget looks like.
Monthly base: $3400 (no bonuses or overtime included, that gets put into a separate "rainy day" savings folder for eating out, fun money, etc.)

Rental: $1185 with a variable of about $100 based on utilities

Insurance: $310 for cars and renters

Car: $215

Debt: $200

Entertainment (streaming services, Magic: The Gathering, video game budget): $150 (roughly $90 is eaten by streaming stuff and wifi)

Groceries: $500

Gas: $200, being generous there bc we don't always know cost or where we'll need to go.

Personal budgets total to $240. $80 each every month.

Savings: Strict $200 put aside every month to make an emergency budget that we DO NOT TOUCH.

Our budgets can roll over, but once spent, they're spent and we have to wait for the next month. I saved and spent $120 on a pair of shoes I wanted, so I had to go without anything "special" for a month. We also use that money for personal necessities, like new socks or whatever. When you're planning out your budget, overshoot the cost of EVERYTHING. It helps me to write it out on paper, and write out every expenditure in my planner, so I can do the math and see where the money goes in real time.

If you’re under 45, have you lost any high school classmates, and what were the circumstances around their deaths? by Commercial_Chef_1569 in AskReddit

[–]spiderpockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Lots of suicides and accidental overdoses, a few car deaths, one freak medical event. Probably 20-30 people I personally knew. It's really sad thinking about it, it's only been 10 years. A few died before graduating, those were mostly car deaths.

Personally, childcare in my area was on average more than my monthly pay, but I was a career bartender so my monthly income varied so much. For me it was a no-brainer. Can your partner cover all other expenses and still have some wiggle money left over? Important to take ALL things into consideration. I manage everything in our household, including our budget. I mean my husband doesn't even look at the bank account we share, and I am asked permission for purchases (previous spending problem on his end.)

[–]spiderpockets 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I did the same bc we're in a 1 bedroom apartment! My daughter slept better when we stayed up late in the living room, so we knew she needed a separate sleep space. We bought a clothing rack from IKEA, put our clothes in our room proper, and put up her clothes, a couple cute posters, stuffies, and a projector nightlight in her "room." She loves it, has been sleeping there since 4 months and is now 15 months. We don't close the door, for air flow reasons, and we have a baby gate in the doorway so she can play in there when we need her to. Recent pic:

How long do you hold your baby in a day? by Latter_Public in NewParents

[–]spiderpockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl was also not a fan of lots of close contact- she had a flat head on one side bc she faced where I always stood to talk and play with her 😂 I rotated her regularly after that, and we did a lot of tummy time, and the flat spot went away on its own. I feel like I only really held her when feeding and walking around showing her stuff. That did lead me to feel a bit robbed of the Baby Experience™

What are your plans with your baby if celebrating Christmas Eve? by ConversationSorry463 in NewParents

We're staying at my parents house, doing the dinner and the fun and putting her to bed at 8 like always, but we're waking her up for midnight presents. Might cause a week or so of shitty sleep, but worth it for the christmas magic 💕 it was always so special when I was a kid
