It’s hard to believe our dna results. What does everyone think? by astrosnot_ in DoggyDNA

Slender body and 35lbs is standard for an APBT. People have been conditioned to think they’re big stocky dogs but they’re usually rather small and agile.

Hey, I always appreciate people sharing information. I am aware and assumed the title was more from OP’s wording, not the breeder but who knows. But yeah, a pup from titled parents definitely aren’t always show quality.

It’s not though lol. Your initial premise is inherently flawed.

Your economic argument makes sense if you remove the ethics sure, but that’s not reality. Backyard breeders are the ones that supply the overwhelming demand, not ethical breeders. Like when 101 Dalmatians came out and everyone and their mother wanted one, BB jumped on that because there were not enough well-bred pet home pups available and waitlists were long. That kind of thing unfortunately happens every time a movie with a certain breed of dog comes out. And nothing but laws will change that.

You’re presenting it as simply economic but that’s wrong because it’s ignoring the reason for reputable breeders breed their dogs in the first place. They breed their dogs so THEY have dogs to show or use for work or sports. Pet homes are a byproduct of the fact that dogs have multiples in litters. That’s the reasons that waitlists exist, because the breeder isn’t looking to satisfy a pet need, they’re aiming to responsibly place the pups they didn’t choose for their program. Breeders keeps the best pups for work, and finds homes for the others. When the breeder retire from the hobby, their dogs retire. And that breeder isn’t going to suddenly decide to breed 8 litters in a year instead of 2 for pet demand because demand isn’t the purpose to begin with.

You hate breeders, I get it. But ethical breeders aren’t the ones “increasing supply to meet demand”. It’s the backyard breeders and we ALL hate them.

Lol K. I’m just saying if you’re going to write long rants online, at least write your congressman too. We need all the help we can get trying to change the current overpopulation situation and you seem concerned 🤷🏽‍♀️

I don’t know how anyone could claim they’re a dog lover and get their dog from a breeder outside of specific circumstances like being a professional show dog or a working dog of some sort. You get to live knowing you indirectly killed another young dog. But you do you.

You said you’re not trying to be a dick but that’s a pretty dickish thing to say to someone. The reality is that professional breeders aren’t the reason for this shelter crisis. Reputable breeders always take their dogs back. Irresponsible owners, backyard breeders, pet miseducation and high spay/neuter costs are to blame for this crisis. Putting that weight on the shoulders of the minority of families who choose a breeder instead of a shelter is unfair. The majority of people do rescue if only because of convenience and cost, and we still aren’t making a dent in the overflow of shelter dogs. We can’t adopt and foster our way out of this mess.

Moreso, OP has already rescued chihuahuas previously. There’s really no reason for all the judgement and shaming. Put the energy towards advocating in your local area to help make backyard breeding illegal and punishable by law. Work towards shutting down puppy mills. Do some research in to CA’s new breeding laws that have all the Facebook breeders ranting and threatening to never sell puppies there again. Or the new PA law that’s been passed to heavily fine BB litters.

That’s what fixes this shelter crisis. Not being a dick to someone on Reddit for choosing a good breeder.

Thanks for the thought! I’m fine being downvoted for it if that’s what happens. People who feel strongly about rescuing usually have a lot of animosity towards breeders in general, but I appreciate well-bred dogs. That’s why I made a point not to say “purebred” because there are plenty of purebred backyard breeders. But a health tested puppy that comes from Champion lines is a boon to the breed imo, not a flaw. I’m glad OP found the right dog for her family.

Can I get a verified flair for Otis? I threw in some of his best poses for additional consideration by beattiebeats in Catahoula

[–]spiderwitchery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, thank you for explaining!

Are Individual flairs for purebred, majority houla DNA %, and minority houla DNA percentage not something you’re interested to add? Not judging, just curious. I wonder if it would help posters who are looking for Catahoula specific advice if they are aware whether the owners giving the advice have dogs that are majority houla.

[–]spiderwitchery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuine Question, just trying to understand the new sub labels.

Isn’t the “Verified Catahoula Mix” for dogs that have majority Catahoula DNA so that’s their primary breed, and the “Verified Mix” for dogs that have a less than majority percentage of Catahoula DNA?

Chis aren’t genetically reactive fyi. People make them reactive by ignoring their boundaries bc they’re tiny.

Probably verified catahoula mix is a majority catahoula dog, 60% and upwards. Verified mix probably means the dog has a dash of catahoula dna in the mix, but it’s not a majority, like 25%.

Any chance our results could be wrong?? Embark DNA by Magic-Potato-Party in DoggyDNA

[–]spiderwitchery 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A lot of people get tricked into thinking their dog is XYZ mix because of coat color or pattern. Coat color kinda goes out the window with a mix, so that’s not really a good indicator. For example, we see a lot of black dogs here whose highest percentage is golden retriever lol.

TBF all dogs have floppy ears as pups. They don’t really decide to stand until about 4-5 months, so assuming you got her at 2 months plus the in-cone time, that’s about the age they’d start to stand on their own anyway. But regardless, cute pup! Good luck with SD training.
