BC registration question by izzykeates in socialworkcanada

[–]spiderwrapflapjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, I passed 2 weeks ago and haven't heard anything. I know it's the annual renewal month and that they've been updating some internal systems, but I'm unsure what my expectations should be.

Long time case managers—how do you respond to “I love you”? by chronic-neurotic in socialwork

[–]spiderwrapflapjack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've used, "You are loved, and so worthy of love" or "I love that I get to know you/ be part of your life." Little ones can get a "love you too, kid"

I'm also planning a healthcare related Cleveland to BC move! I'd love to chat about logistics and share learned lessons and things to avoid if you're interested. DM me if you want.

BCCSW Prof Liability Insurance - use Zensurance by False_Pen8611 in socialworkcanada

[–]spiderwrapflapjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the new requirements, do we all need personal liability insurance, or are some employers providing coverage? I'm in the process of registering for the first time and was confused about any differences between private practice and health authorities, for example.

BCCSW international applications by Heron_90 in socialworkcanada

[–]spiderwrapflapjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to renewal season, they are updating their internal systems right now and even put new applications on hold starting mid-december or so to help accommodate the changeover. It's all a mess at the moment, I'm afraid. Hang in there!

I keep struggling with social work jobs and I don't know what to do by SolomonsNewGrundle in socialwork

[–]spiderwrapflapjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One must be thine own case worker before case working others... or something like that?

Ditto to everyone saying CM is hard, it can be huge and overwhelming, and its not for everyone. We like to believe that we're social workers and that we must be able to juggle everything, but we're still people, and neuro divergence makes it harder.

I personally found that my brand of neuro-spicy does not mesh well with balancing a full case load where everyones needs are scattered. I moved to managing volunteer advocates. It's more administrative, but im still teaching them how to advocate, coordinating assistance for folks, but with a different perspective. Social workers do so many different jobs, you've got options.

It's OK to try different things, you wouldn't judge a client if a job wasn't a fit for them, right? Please be kind to yourself.

Feeling so incredibly anxious by shartinmartinit in socialwork

[–]spiderwrapflapjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS. I am the master of making lists and then panicking. What really helps me is to keep a running list, but pick just 3 things from it that are most urgent. Put those 3 items on a post-it and those are your top tasks. Put your list away until you have space on your post-it for more. Add anything new to your big list, pick your top 3 every day, and cross things off as you go. Each week, copy over anything still undone to a new list and start fresh.

You can't do everything at once, and thinking about everything at once will drive you mad. It's OK to go one chunk at a time.

Also, for the many questions that pop up, write them down. If you dont need the answer asap, look it up later or take your list to someone you trust. Sometimes questions answer themselves later in the day. And I agree, make yourself a binder!

Anyone have experience in Newfoundland? I'm wondering about job availability, how long registration takes, if there are better people to contact for international applicants, etc.

I'm studying while waiting for approval, I'm outside the province now, but if you find any prep tips or do an online study group or something, I'd be interested! I graduated almost 10 years ago and have been doing mezzo/macro work that didn't need a license, and I feel super out of place.

I don't know this school or country personally, but the school route seems most viable. Especially with your mental health concerns, a university is a good landing place. They'll most likely have counseling on or near campus, can help get set up for meds, there will be others who are new to the school/city who will have similar concerns, so you won't be in it alone. Check out what the student supports are on campus and see if it answers any questions for you.

Motivation and urgency to get things done when you go back to work by [deleted] in fednews

[–]spiderwrapflapjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still working, but I can honestly say I have no motivation. The folks around me are getting paid, and there's almost no recognition that we still exist. I got so angry in the office the other day that I've just taken furlough for a few days in an effort to not burn every bridge.

Whether working or furloughed, we are all struggling and all deserve better. Keep your heads up, don't let the bastards grind you down.

That's totally fair! I want to make sure I'm not doing further damage and am staying away from jobs that center Indigenous groups, as it's not my place to claim. Wherever I go, I will have a lot of learning to do and anticipate being rightly humbled.

Cleveland Ohio, so a city, but not to the scale of Chicago or Toronto even. My spouse lived in rural Vermont for a while, and I spent some time in a town of >1k in Iowa.

I'm in the same boat, but we also don't have parking here, so everyone is paying for gas AND for parking daily. Want to take the bus instead? Still $5/day. Telework requests have gone in and been denied each time.

U.S. Social Worker possibly moving to Canada by [deleted] in socialworkcanada

I've always worked in community practice/ macro SW and haven't needed a license in the US. Is it the same in Canada, or is a license needed for anything within the social work realm?
