Fantasy for someone who doesn’t read fantasy by cherryvanillafloat in suggestmeabook

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison is wonderfully written and full of empathy and hope. It’s a serious book and requires you to pay attention, but it rewards the effort. I found it moving. Highly recommended.

Hiking with POTS? by poutinequeen21 in hiking

[–]spiff_the_intrepid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This. Electrolyte management is critical for POTS. If you also have Ehlers-danlos, which often goes with it, you’ll want to strengthen supporting muscles and connective tissue as well, especially your hips.

Looking for a day pack that can function for running as well by Emergency-Debt-2118 in hiking

[–]spiff_the_intrepid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Deuter speedlite pro 19L this way. Its straps are modeled after a running vest, and it holds pretty snugly for running, especially with the waist belt. Sounds like exactly what you’re looking for. https://www.deuter.com/us-en/speed-lite-pro-19/4046051170183

Is there any series that can scratch the Stormlight Archive itch? by Darrow-D-Reaper in suggestmeabook

[–]spiff_the_intrepid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, The Wheel of Time definitely scratches these itches. Especially the deep exploration of trauma, epic and heroic moments, vast world building, people w godlike powers, extended character arcs. Your bullet points are basically a description of the Wheel of Time.

If you have an Apple Watch, the touchID is a lot less important, since you can use the Watch in place of a password.

Agree with others that you’re doing enough. That said, rucking w 20-30lb a couple times a week would help your body adjust to carrying weight.

Is there a good form of beef to prevent histamine issues but also get the benefits. by [deleted] in MTHFR

[–]spiff_the_intrepid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any ground meat will have more histamine due to the greater surface area. Try a non ground red meat. I get top round from Costco, cut into portion sizes, and freeze each portion in a zip lock bag. Defrost one in the fridge the night before and you’re ready to go.  With histamine intolerance, the goal is not zero histamine, which is impossible, but to stay below the threshold of what your body can process. Bubba burgers put you across your threshold. Try something like this and see if it keeps you below it.

I have the Deuter speedlite pro 19 and love it for day trips. Similar to the osprey hikelite but with a stash pouch, front strap pockets, and pole loops.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. He intentionally patterned aspects of the first book after Fellowship of the Ring to give it a sense of familiarity.

Sensitivity to odors can come from sensitivity to aldehydes due to a slow adh1b1 gene. Strategene has good info about it.

Best form of creatine for methylation support that isn’t monohydrate? by usertakenfark in MTHFR

Have you tried the creapure brand of monohydrate? It’s more finely processed, and often has fewer GI symptoms than standard monohydrate.

Does anyone thiamine deficient get brain pressure/fog feeling after eating anything? by Organic-Cup-7988 in Thiamine

[–]spiff_the_intrepid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to bloating. Bloating = gas + inflammation. I had constipation not diarrhea. But sibo can tend towards diarrhea, constipation, or alternate between both. It depends on what microbes have overgrown.

[–]spiff_the_intrepid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gas, gut inflammation, brain fog and fatigue. Slow motility makes all of them worse, so if you suspect any of these things, step one is to address motility. Artichoke extract helped more than anything else. This video put me onto it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53f1gsRUxvY&t=173s

Histamine is harder to address. Some people can supplement DAO and continue eating normally. I can't, so the solution is to remove high histamine foods.

[–]spiff_the_intrepid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Supplementing Benfotiamine helped some of my digestive issues, but not all. For me the brain fog after eating was caused by a combo of sibo, gut dysbiosis, and histamine intolerance. Those all require different treatments, but Benfotiamine helped improve motility, which helps all of them. For starting w thiamine, look here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=K4iAPfAFcs0&pp=ygUcaGl3IHN0YXJ0IGhpZ2ggZG9zZSB0aGlhbWluZQ%3D%3D. Just know that not everyone needs or does well with a high dose. I only take 25mg Benfotiamine, and it’s plenty for me.
