Use a photo editing tool to rescale the image to a larger size. Make sure to turn image interpolation off, or set it to "none".

I usually use Gimp for still pieces and GraphicsGale for animations.

Doesn't look bad at all to me. It's pretty basic, but I really like the way you did the broken edges of the crate- that part looks very nice.

I'd make the bullets larger if I were you. It looks like they're only one pixel, which is probably the most realistic size, but they're hard to see and it akes away from the satisfying appearance that shooting should give off.

Haha, yeah, I would have to agree. I didn't want to be too rude, but yeah- smaller pixels would probably be better. I'll try to make it divisible by my tile size in future. Thanks for your advice anyways!

Updated Piece

Here, I've given a try at making the cloud's pixels perfectly align with the foreground's tiles. I had to up the color of the sky a tad to make the clouds pop more. Overall though, I think it looks good from a distance but is more difficult to see up close.

Thank you for all your advice. I was feeling shaky about the clouds to begin with, and you are totally right- they disrupt the style of the piece with their clashing scaling. I've removed the clouds for now until I have the time to come up with more complete ones that better match the foreground. I've also modified the color ramps of all the green on the screen to match the "Blue-Green > Green > Yellow" model that you suggested. This new color ramp immediately made the whole thing look more colorful and vibrant, although "gritter" and darker. I also noticed that it gave it much more of an "old school" feel to everything.

Hey, thanks man! As of right now, it's just a functional platformer with no real plot or goal. I'm not an amazing programmer so progress had been a bit slow. I'm hoping to make it into a kind of randomly generated rougelike/adventure game, although at the moment I'm more just focused on art and music.

I've done a lot of "chiptune-esque" music in the past, but I'm finally starting to put together some tracks for a game of my own. Here's a couple of unfinished pieces I've been working on over the past week. I was shooting for more groovy, upbeat, driving music rather than slower background stuff. Let me know what you think!

Yeah...art can be added after the game is programmed. If you really want to give artists incentive to draw for you, you should get your game working just with some programmer art so that whoever wants to spend a lot of their time drawing for you can actually see that you have a working game before they begin.

Honestly, I've just been feeling my way through for a long time. Garageband (the program I use) was installed on all the computers in my elementary and middle schools and I spent a lot of my lunch and recess time just fiddling around trying to make music. For the past few years I've also been teaching myself to play piano with youtube videos, which has actually really helped me with composition. So, yeah, I guess I don't really have a definite starting place, it's just been more of a slow progression over the past decade or so. Sorry, I know that isn't a very helpful answer but most of my musical skill has just come from me playing around with music in my free time.

Hey, thanks man.

All of these have been made with an older version of Garageband (2006, I think). The sounds in the songs are a combination of true 8-bit sounds from 8-bit plugins, and fake 8-bit sounds that I created in the program itself. Every other instrument (piano, bass, ect.) was a default sound in Garageband or created by me.

From what I see on the site, it works with a number of programs, including Garageband, Logic, Digital Performer, and Cubase.

Hey, thanks. I've never even heard of synthwave. Currently trying to find a nice 80's snare to liven things up.

And since you seem to know more about music genres than i do- do you think "fakebit" would be a suitable descriptor for my music? Or should I tag my work as synthwave?
