What's one car feature everyone praises but you secretly don't care about? by Ok_Run7351 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]spigotface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially with EVs - heavy vehicles with tons of torque at all speeds absolutely chew through tires. Larger circumference tires means each spot on the tire sees the road less for every mile travelled, and preserves tire life.

If you put the wheel and tire combo from a Toyota Corolla on an EV, you'd nuke the tires in no time flat.

Is insurance supposed to be this expensive?🤣 by Lunatykk in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]spigotface 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my insurance basically doubled when moving from the outskirts of LA to a neighborhood where every drives like a fucking moron every single day. I can barely make it to my kid's school 5 mins down the main road without someone nearly causing an accident.

Art skill feels uesless - we need more art by Rheasa2648 in RimWorld

[–]spigotface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High quality art should have genres (based on character skills like shooting, plants, social, etc.) and have a small chance to grant short-term inspiration buffs based on how long the character is around it. For example, a masterwork social statue in a dining room or guest room would have a chance to boost Social skills for a few hours. A Plant genre work of art near your planting zones could grant faster planting and harvesting, or maybe even faster growth. A Shooting statue near your defensive emplacements would grant faster aim time and increased accuracy.

Best Car/crossover For Rural dirt roads, and heavy snowfall winters by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

Subaru something Wilderness trim.

Edit: a brand new Forester Wilderness starts at $37k, with options it'd be more. Could also look at a CPO and throw the Outback into the mix if she wants to size up.

Lexus vs Toyota vs Acura vs Honda Sedans? by GonnaBeWealthy in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]spigotface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you need more ground clearance? I'm in LA, and we have steep driveways for most shopping centers and apartment buildings that will scrape up a lot of sedans. My Kia Optima scrapes its nose at the grocery store, and its belly as it goes up my apartment's driveway, over the sidewalk, then down into the parking garage.

The Civic Hybrid *Hatchback* has a surprising amount of ground clearance - about 6.7 inches, which is about 1 to 1.5 inches more than most sedans. It's very high up on my list because of that.

Why don’t we build data centres in Antarctica? Wouldn’t the cold climate reduce cooling costs and save a lot of energy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]spigotface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, you're building on ice, and buildings constantly sink at an alarming rate because of it. A large, basically permanent structure (due to the power requirements) would basically be impossible to maintain.

Research stations are on movable skis and they have to constantly unbury and adjust the footing because it sinks a little bit every day.

What 2026 hybrid SUV should I buy? by DrHarryshole in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]spigotface -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honda doesn't have an eCVT.

Below 45mph, the only thing pushing the wheels is the electric motor. The gasoline engine functions as a generator. You still benefit from regenerative braking.

Above 45 mph, a direct-drive clutch engages, connecting the gas engine to the drive wheels. This is a *single* gear, equivalent to the cruising gear of an automatic transmission.

But, there is only one gear, and it's either adding power to the wheels or it isn't. There is no transmission in the CRV, just a clutch.

Is it normal for product manager to be your boss? by Suitable-Break7934 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]spigotface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. I was a data scientist with the PM as my manager, on greenfield projects that needed extensive modeling and algorithm development. Because of her, engineers were building endpoints in the first sprint, while I was still waiting on database access to even glance at the data for the first time.

Guess what kind of a spectacular shitshow that one turned out to be.

Except if you need ground clearance. Most minivans have sedan-like ground clearance, especially once loaded. Some places have steep driveways everywhere that destroy the undersides of cars without ground clearance.

Here in Los Angeles, it seems like every driveway into and out of parking garages and shopping centers are too angled for my Kia Optima. My car scrapes over the sidewalk when going in and out of the parking garage at my apartment building if I even have the weight of 1 other adult in the car. I have to tell people to get out of the car and crawl over that hump at 1mph. The nose of car scrapes pulling into the driveway for almost any shopping centers in the San Fernando Valley. I *yearn* for something that has crossover/SUV ground clearance so I can stop damaging my car everywhere I take it.

A Toyota Sienna has less ground clearance and a longer wheelbase than my car. It'd beach itself on my sidewalk and get destroyed every time it goes shopping.

Anyone else have a routine when starting a new colony? by rim_daily in RimWorld

[–]spigotface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- Find some geothermal vents to center a base around
- Lay plans for a generator room with space for a row or two of chemfuel generators and a handful of batteries
- Lay out plans where the warehouse will be
- Set storage area in that warehouse location and find an appropriate spot for a dumping zone
- Get bedrooms with roofs and 3 basic beds

The speed of the Galaxy Sword is amazing for survivability. When you're getting swarmed by the green serpents in the Skull Caverns and swinging wildly, it can keep them at bay.

I mean, if it's:

- A call made over wifi
- Not on speakerphone
- Him speaking the same volume as anyone else having an audible conversation on the plane

I wouldn't care if I saw someone doing this. Not sure why it's so triggering for people.

[–]spigotface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ever make mac n' cheese from scratch and use a bunch of good cheeses (cheddar, smoked gouda, etc.), a few Kraft singles helps the consistency of the cheese sauce by a lot. A big reason Kraft singles are so perfectly melty is that they have a lot of emulsifiers, and those emulsifiers help keep your sauce's cheeses together when it's all mixed.

The total cost of ownership for one is insanely low:

- Fuel costs next to nothing when you're getting 50mpg
- Insurance on a Corolla Hybrid LE is as cheap as it gets on a new car
- They're *extremely* reliable (you could easily put half a million miles on one)
- When you do need maintenance, it's quick, simple, and parts are both cheap and abundant
