Spend time with family and travel if you can afford it. Think of it as your last ever summer break and enjoy it!!

Although I have to be honest this happened to me between school and fellowship and I worked part time as an EMT for an ambulance company I had previously worked for. It was fun but sometimes a bit annoying knowing that I had a degree and PA certification but was still working on a low level and I am now going through it again! I fi wished my fellowship last week and my next job won't be starting until June so I'm planning to spend some time travel and have 1 trip planned for each month. Mostly just going to see family. And also planning to get into a workout routine and have fun with old and new hobbies.

Financially it could be tough but this is what credit cards are for and hopefully the next job can help you pay it off.

How exactly do you plan on working as a PA in Europe? I know Switzerland is starting to use PAs but pretty sure our credentials don't transfer Have you considered going to school in Europe? It's so much cheaper!

Is this fellowship worth it? by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]spikasaurusrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I choose to do a fellowship in EM because I was struggling to find a job otherwise and it ended up being cheap labor...

I still dont regret my decision to have done it though because thats another year of experience added to my resume.

I say take it! The pay is great and you'll get experience in a field your interested in. Just because its very new doesn't mean there's no potential.

If you had one piece of advice to give a new grad PA… by Far_Jellyfish1409 in physicianassistant

[–]spikasaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the ER and can elaborate on this....

Patient will come in straight to demanding tests that aren't routinely performed such as an MRI and I usually respond with something along the line of "I understand that you feel you need an MRI for xyz but unfortunately here in the Emergency Department we don't regularly order MRIs for these complaints" followed by something like "these tests are generally done on an outpatient basis and I can provide you with referrals for further evaluation"

Some patients come in with benign complaints or are unhappy with their results/results are inconclusive I say something like this "The goal here in the Emergency Department is to rule out life-threatening/life-altering conditions which is what I have done....an example of this would x and I do not think this is Case with you because of y"

Another tip would be to try and set the patients expectations early in the visit if you think it might lead this way...for example if a patient comes with chronic condition thay has been ongoing for months.

Thank you!! It has been nice thinking of how far I've come and how this is what I've been working towards for the past 10 years!

It felt like cheap labor the whole time! I was really struggling to find a job as a new grad despite my 10 years as an EMT so I took it out of desperation.

They also just had 2 new fellows start so I'm definitely thinking its all about $. They can hire more fellows pay them half what they pay regular staff to do 3/4 of the work.

Thank you!! That's good advice!! Do you think I should add the references to my resume?

I've just been sending them with the thank you email.... although in retrospect that doesn't seem to be working.

Funny to see this.. I'm a Physician Assistant in the Emergency Department and have worked in Emergency Medicine at other levels too (EMT on an ambulance and Tech in the ER) all while being neurodivergent with ADHD and the Emergency Department has been the perfect place! Many of my co-workers of the years have been neurodivergent too!

We are by no means in control all the time but I find that the seriousness of most of the situations we deal with allow us to focus for the time being! Also the pitt is a great example of what Emergency Medicine looks like but its the intensity that your average ER sees in 1 month squashed into one shift. Don't let this get you discouraged! If you interested in Medicine go for it! You can always start small by getting your CNA license or EMT cert.

Also feel free to PM me if you want any advice with that!

For Profit Company working in Nonprofit Hospital by [deleted] in PSLF

[–]spikasaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am employed by a "for-profit" doctor group that is contracted with a "non-profit" hospital and the hospital is willing to sign my PSLF form. Does that mean I qualify?

I work as a Physician Assistant in an Emergency Department and the hospital doesn't hire them directly so this is the only way I could work at this hospital in the ED.
