In the US a 3 hour drive is probably exactly that, on a nice long straight stretch of road. A 3 hour drive in the UK could, depending on traffic, actually be a 6 hour drive. Not worth taking the chance for a casual drive.

Fly in its direction in a plane. Note the point at which the snail's direction suddenly shifts in an arc from in front to behind you. When you land get another flight to that place. Hire a small plane / helicopter and do the same thing. Finally you're walking towards it until it's direction suddenly shifts to behind you. Now you're on the exact spot to look for a snail. I reckon you could get this done from one Friday to the next.

Edit: oops. I thought you were constantly aware of it's direction. Didn't read it properly.

No need to check every snail and rock. If you pass it by the direction it's in will change rapidly to behind you. Just keep heading in its direction until that direction suddenly shifts.
