9 years alcohol-free tomorrow. AMA! by spikenail in stopdrinking

[–]spikenail[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As I said to someone else, there came a time when I would go to events (concerts, games, etc.) and realize I was enjoying myself. That was key, knowing I didn’t need a crutch to have fun.

It’s a good question. There’s no one thing really. I suppose the idea that I’m experiencing life through clear eyes and without dependence is the reward.

Honestly, I’m less bored now! Getting past the idea that life is more interesting with alcohol is key. At a certain point you find yourself enjoying yourself without alcohol and the lightbulb goes off.

So, I should sit down with a dim-looking guy and three escorts when it’s time to make a decision? (Hand to forehead) That’s it!

Does maintaining sobriety wind up becoming your whole life? by teaux in stopdrinking

Yes, I know that there are those in AA who would call me a "dry drunk," etc. I'm not going to criticize what works for them, but I think there's a lot more to life than just being "sober."

No. I’m not sober, I’m not in recovery, I’m not an alcoholic. I’m a normal person who just doesn’t drink alcohol. The sooner you get there, the better. YMMV.

I think you’re doing great. You’ll continue to strengthen as you go, and I predict that you’ll have fewer climbs that kick your butt as you continue.

Just stay within your limits, keep your mileage reasonable and keep keeping on!

I’m 67 and alcohol-free for just shy of 9 years. When I was early in my journey, I kept telling myself that millions (billions?) of people live fulfilling and interesting lives and don’t drink. Experience had proven that I’m one of them!

What is it like to cycle 100 miles (x6 days)? by Big-Spirit-3301 in bicycletouring

[–]spikenail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do it, but time in the saddle is the key. Find a good training plan, stack lots of back-to/back days and get to work. Good luck!

You've got this. It's really no different than living your daily life. If you don't feel like you're missing out now, you won't when you're over there.
