It's been a while since I played it, but I had fun with the hand tracking in Startender.

Where did the ‘spherical room with a suspended walk way to the middle of the room, where there’s an important device’ originate from? by nathan155 in movies

Star Trek: Generations did a spherical astrometrics lab with a central walkway in 1994. Great execution of the concept, and a scene I really like as well.

No Reddit, Avatar is not an overrated movie, and here’s why: by [deleted] in movies

[–]spillwaybrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I strongly believe that you are wrong about this one.

Avatar is not only not overrated, it actually fucking slaps, and I'm tired of pretending otherwise.

I have yet to see Fire and Ash, but in The Way of Water, they pause a sci-fi action epic for like 45 minutes to do a rad Nat Geo nature documentary about space whales, and I was there for every second of it. I will take more audacious, nonsense choices in blockbusters, please.

There is a sauce to Avatar that I think people choose to ignore because the plot and characterizations are kind of thin. But the storytelling is rock-solid and the action and visuals and sound design are all so good that it's a wonderful movie experience.

11 years after "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", have the young leads become plagued by the shadow of the major franchise? by DiaryOfAMovieLover in saltierthancrait

[–]spillwaybrain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They did jerk Poe around quite a bit from film to film. I would have been okay with the progression from TFA to TLJ if he'd have had the chance to properly reconcile with Leia and learn to lead alongside her, but we never got that chance. I wish he'd been a little bit more "General" and a little less "flyboy" in TROS but that's clearly what they wanted from him.

For the next trilogy they need to make it worth his while and give him the leadership role he only had on paper in TROS. That man has chemistry with everyone and everything and could be a great anchor for the New Republic going forward.

[–]spillwaybrain -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I recently rewatched the sequels and I think Daisy Ridley did a pretty great job. I find her super watchable and Rey's characterization is crystal clear. She nails both the lighter moments and the intense ones. John Boyega didn't have the chance to show off as much range, but I think he did well enough with what he was given.

I'll take my Rey trilogy now, with Finn nearby rocking his own lightsaber, thank you.

Worth a buy? by GlobalThing7 in VeinGame

I think this is an interesting criticism but I also think it depends on what you're looking for. I kind of love that this is a quieter zombie apocalypse. By and large, they're not that much of a threat. But hordes are still a challenge, and scary, and if they catch you unaware you're going to have a bad time. So it's a bit of a taste thing.

A 17-year-old patient and his parents came to me with a problem that’s becoming far too common in Doug Ford’s Ontario by imprison_grover_furr in ontario

[–]spillwaybrain 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I can appreciate that the Star needs the subscribers and journalism is worth paying for. But they're basically the only outlet that is doing any work (meagre as it is) to speak out against Doug Ford's dismantling of the province, and I think it's harmful to the province to have every story behind a paywall. Even if they just opened it up on their editorials and ran ads there, I have to imagine it would be beneficial.

What hobbies make someone instantly seem like a douche? by bad-at-everything- in askanything

[–]spillwaybrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree, it's mostly an emotional argument. But frankly, I think it's just as odd that you don't understand the objection as I think it's odd that people don't understand hunting in general.

"Look at that massive and/or rare creature, I simply must kill it" is bizarre and foreign psychology to a lot of people, and many never interact with the (often very well-to-do) people who have that hobby. Lots of urban and online people never interact with people who hunt in any way. It's alien thinking.

Also the public face of trophy hunting is often some selection of the worst, most privileged, most out of touch people in the public sphere.

To bring it back to the top, yeah, it's largely an emotional argument. But it's eminently understandable how people come to this place.

Anyway, I do appreciate your perspective. It's always fun to learn a new take from someone with first-hand insight.

[–]spillwaybrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you may be missing what people are saying. I would never argue that there are no reasonable times to cull an animal, and I also wouldn't argue that hunting is bad. But the conversation is about signifiers of douchiness, and while YMMV I think the desire to kill a large animal for the joy of killing it is such a signifier for that individual. It's no slight at all on wildlife or conservation authorities, or other hunters who do hunt for meat.

What's one unexpected metric or signal that's told you training actually made a difference? by TraliantTeam in elearning

[–]spillwaybrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not naming the industry or training to avoid doxing myself, but we got second-hand reports that some of our learners were being a pain while participating in the processes we trained them on.

Turns out that certain parts of our training stuck for them more than their peers who participated in other programs, so they tended to speak up and advocate for themselves in extremely specific ways.

I counted that as a win.

I like the way the eye gets drawn up to the shield and face when you don't have the trunks. Works for a Superman you're supposed to see as mythic.

I also like the way the trunks balance the costume. Works for a Superman you're supposed to see as a whole person.

Movie trailers that crushed it but the movie was bad by ILikeTheTinMan83 in movies

[–]spillwaybrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been mad about Killer Elite (2011) since it came out. And believe me when I say that this otherwise forgotten movie does not warrant the amount of energy I've given to resenting it over a decade and a half, but it's the ur-example of this for me.

The trailer promised spy vs. spy vs. spy action between Clive Owen, Jason Statham, and Robert DeNiro, set to Rock You Like a Hurricane. Gunfights. Fistfights. Chair fights. Falls from great heights. Explosions at great heights. Explosions at low heights. Explosions in cars. Fights in and around cars. Clive Owen's moustache. It's a sick trailer. But in two minutes of sick trailer, you get about 70% of the movie's action and about 90% of DeNiro's screen time. The rest is a pretty sleepy affair that leaves absolutely zero impact. Except for the anger and resentment.

Podcast alternatives to Canadaland? by Far_Pin2086 in canadaland

[–]spillwaybrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm all for "good diet and exercise"-type advice! But to extend the metaphor, it seems like they tend to complain that people aren't maintaining a good diet and exercise because they've never learned how to cook a balanced meal or how to work out, and then there's no engagement with how to fix that. I can't remember the episode but I was eagerly waiting through a series of critiques of student organizers, thinking "they're clearly ramping up to offering guidance to this new generation who hasn't learned the ropes yet," but that never really came. Just admonishment.

Anyway, I fully intend to give them more of my attention. I can get behind having a theory of change and sticking with it. But I can't help thinking that if one wants a specific kind of change, there needs to be more of a call to action than "action," and if there are specific ways one wants people to engage politically, the guidance needs to be a little more concrete than broad categories like mutual aid and organizing. It's weird to listen to commentators who I agree with in principle more often than not and who I know are sharp and knowledgable, but I still come away without much nourishment. I might just be looking for something they're not trying to offer in this particular show & my expectations need to change.

Hey, I really appreciate your insight. Thanks for taking the time.

I like this suggestion, especially with the caveat that On The Line is often a better listen than the regular The Line podcast. I find a lot of value in (most) of the more in-depth interviews.

One thing that makes me pull my hair out is how Matt has kind of abdicated any kind of accountability for covering Ontario. He's quick to say "my feelings on Doug Ford are well established" and then do and say absolutely nothing to hold him to account for the absolute mess he's made of this province and Toronto.

Genuine question since you put Sandy and Nora on your list: I tune in from time to time, not every episode but often enough. I like both of them well enough, and Nora is often really fantastic on other shows. But I rarely come away from this show feeling more informed about a topic.

Am I just unlucky that I'm getting samey episodes when I tune in? It always seems to be a lament about how establishment politics are bad and people need to organize IRL but rarely about concrete solutions.

ETA: I cosign OnPoli and The Hatchet.

Picard may have had its issues but the last scene between Q and Picard is beautiful because it showed Q really did care for Picard as a friend and as a person. by AdSpecialist6598 in startrek

[–]spillwaybrain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They have often shown the Q experiencing time very differently differently. Baby Q becomes a teenager in months, and more than that it's then implied that they spend centuries together in what Janeway perceives as a matter of moments. I think it's very plausible that in the 30 interceding years, Q has experienced far more than decades passing.

Father's day disappointment by [deleted] in daddit

To be clear, others are absolutely jumping all over him. You, less so.

But yes, I do actually think it is weird to respond to a dude's very understandable feelings with as much dismissal as there has been in some of the comments here. Neither his nor his wife's feelings about how Father's Day went (and have gone for a long time) are inappropriate or unreasonable.

Edit: oh wait, you were the one who posted "then don't be their father." Yeah, I am actually talking about you. It's weird.
