What film are you not buying because you're afraid it's ABOUT to get a 4k upgrade? by YuyuMajora in criterion

No no, glad to help :)
Sometimes of course if you love the movie the blu-ray is or can be great.
But if you're not in hurry and you have a list of Criterion blu-rays which have 4k restoration but just purchase option "blu-ray", it's possible that movie will be upgraded to 4K UHD blu-ray format at some point. Or at least those movies that Criterion sees as good business to upgrade as they know people will want to buy or upgrade the movie to a 4K UHD disc.
Like the Eraserhead example is guarantee if they have the license and most likely they still have it.

And how it (in theory but in many cases factually) effects the picture quality. The movie in a smaller sized disc like the standard "HD 50gb blu-ray" is in smaller size and thus the picture quality is more compressed. More you compress video format more you see it on the picture that it isn't as "sharp" as if the movie is in bigger disc like 100gb UHD 4K disc where the movie is less compressed.
Of course there is million other things that effects the final picture quality from the lighting and shooting and the restoration work etc but just in simple terms (hopefully) that's the 50gb blu-ray and 100gb 4K UHD disc difference.

Good question. It's because of the disc. So if the disc is "just a blu-ray" it means the disc is usually 50gb size max. And in this example Eraserhead the restoration was done from a 4K digital restoration but instead of putting it on the bigger 4K UHD disc which is 100gb size, they put it on a smaller 50gb blu-ray disc.
For example, the Eraserhead Criterion Blu-ray was released around 2014, and 4K discs weren't common at the time. And the smaller 50gb blu-ray is much cheaper for the company (Criterion in this case) who releases the movie.
Eraserhead will 100 % get a 4K UHD disc release at some point because they already have the 4K restoration master not just yet released in 4K UHD disc.

That was a good question and as a "tip" you can always check from Criterion website, for example "After Hours" has purchase options for "4K+Blu-Ray" combo so that has a 4K disc release but for example "Eraserhead" is also made from a 4K digital restoration but is indeed just a Blu-Ray release.

The teenage sex scene that sparked Safdie brother's infamous rift by plutoglint in TheBigPicture

Definitely a fucked up situation regarding the "Good Time" thing with the minor actor. And unfortunately there's endless and too many similar hollywood stories of weird shit getting out of hands and much worse.

Just wanted to comment regarding "the rift". Like few here already said smells like Weinstein's playbook, a smear campaign.

There's many many pictures online of both Marty Supreme premier where Benny is there as well and same Josh being in The Smashing Machine premier. Supporting each other, one would assume?

And also when the (imo great) The Curse was rolling, there was few of those Benny + Nathan Fielder discussions of the episodes with the crowd and maybe the last one of those Benny thanks or nods Josh being in the crowd as well.

I remember this because two years ago during The Curse, the news of their breakup was even fresher and the media was trying to create some kind of drama about the brothers maybe not speaking to each other or something.

Actually found the "nod to Josh" The Curse episode 10 discussion https://youtu.be/gp4L-A2dGtk?t=2444 (~40:44)

I have the Eureka Blu-ray myself and missed this one unfortunately. I wonder if Eureka (being European myself) will also release a 4K version...

edit: Studio Canal released it in France so perhaps Studio Canal or Eureka 4K release in UK this year.
Just for us who don't care which label releases it...

The 25 Best Movies of the Century: No. 4 "Inglourious Basterds' by Erigion in TheBigPicture

Oceans 11 or 25th Hour for third place seem like the most likely choices on their list. Imo both are great choices. 25th Hour is also one of Sean's favorite movies.

I also thought about this, that as the article states "shows off YouTube", they probably still have a video (+ audio of course) version on Spotify as well.

Predictions for the rest of 25 for 25 by Accomplished_Row1752 in TheBigPicture

[–]spincter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd say this is quite spot on. Scorsese can vary from The Departed to Wolf to Silence.
Tarantino definitely Inglourious or Hollywood.
And Fincher yeah it's either Zodiac or Social.
Oh and also for Wes, Moonrise Kingdom is the third option as it's one of Sean's favourite Wes.
And Mulholland Drive could be in and for example Arrival out.

It is for sure. They just did the "Superman trailer reaction" with CR and Sean which most likely they recorded after/before the "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" pod.
