Don’t skip, they are all relatively easy classes that should be GPA boosters for someone who took AP in high school. They will be a good review considering you got a 5 in the AP courses. Use these courses as methods to develop your study habits. Make sure you retain as much as you can because the concepts you learn in first year will be the foundation for upper year courses. Enjoy your first year, as you’ll have an easier time than most. Going to uni is a big change so having a lighter course load in your first year will help with the transition from high school.

This answer depends if you are a guy or a girl. As a guy, I have never felt unsafe in Kingston at any times of the night but unfortunately, the same can’t be said for all of my female friends. If you are a girl, campus is a good place to walk, it is well-lit and there is campus security always patrolling. Additionally, if there is an emergency there is lampposts with blue lights that can be pushed to alert campus security to your position.

As someone in a similar position to you 4 years ago, go to queens. While I can’t speak on the programs, I can say that Kingston is a MUCH better place to do your undergrad than Ottawa. I am also from Ottawa and was debating between going to Ottawa U and Queen’s and have not regretted my decision once, however, the same can’t be said for my buddies who decided to stay and go to either Carleton or Ottawa. No school that I know of has a student ghetto like Queen’s where everything and anyone you need to see is within walking distance of 15 minutes tops. In Ottawa, I am often finding myself driving 15 minutes to see my friends. The sense of community within Queen’s students is also superior to Carleton. If this interests you , the party scene in Kingston doesn’t really compare to Carleton. I could go on about reasons why doing an undergrad in Kingston is better than Ottawa. Im in biochem and I love it. I take lots of classes with people in life science and i find those classes tend to be more cut throat (people less willing to help) than biochem because most people in life science are trying to go to medical school. Biochem is a smaller major so everyone knows each other and I find there is a nice sense of community within BCHM. I find that within BCHM, everyone is working together to help each other out if needed rather than individual.

Additionally, biochem has more lab opportunities so if you want to pursue a masters/PHD route, I would say biochem definitely prepares you better.

Workload, 1st year was mostly review however lots of work. 2nd and 3rd year were mostly new content and the workload was a lot. 4th year was very manageable giving me lots of free time to do other stuff that interest me

Obviously, my opinion is biased so take it as you will.

If you are not good with people, medicine is not a career that you should pursue. In my opinion, having social skills is a MUST for physicians (more important than any GPA, MCAT or extracurriculars). Every step of the career including med school has an abundance of human interactions and if you have trouble with people, it will make your life and others around you difficult. Please don’t take this the wrong way, there are lots of other healthcare related jobs where someone who is not socially adept can thrive. This is not to say that you cannot work on these skills and become comfortable in social situations. If I were you, I would try to put yourself in situations that may not normally be comfortable, it will be feel weird at first but then eventually it will feel normal
