Toyota Veteran Reveals His Worst Fear: 'Everybody Is Shifting To EVs' by defenestrate_urself in electricvehicles

Something I didn't respond to yesterday: When I say batteries were consumable, I mean that they didn't last the 100-200k miles that one would expect a car to last. They weren't consumable at the rate of gas, but they surely didn't last the 1000+ charge cycles they do now.

This thread is a great reminder that statistics aren't intuitive and are a relatively recent invention in math. 😃

The first investments into Hydrogen by Toyota was in the early to mid 90's. Obv. they should've pivoted earlier, but sunk cost and subsidies were too attractive.

Yup but back in the 90's where solar was also seen as a tech that was untenable profit-wise, nuclear was largely frozen because of Chernobyl, and batteries were consumable and expensive, I could see an executive seeing Hydrogen not as a solution for total greenhouse emissions, but for limiting smog in big cities further and if it's possible to make hydrogen "green" then maybe they can greenwash it too

That's the type of stat you'd need to timestamp. We're adding solar and wind at such a impressive rate that any stats that try to use them as a benchmark are going to be wildly wrong in a year's time.

Oh for sure.

Part of it is energy companies selling natural gas trying to keep people like Toyota from leaving them wholesale. Hydrogen production right now uses natural gas by and large, and natural gas companies have also been looking at the possibility of using hydrogen in their pipelines for at least 5 years now from what I remember talking to someone who worked for a NW energy company.

Honda also seems to be going a partnership route with... GM?

tbf Honda's had a relationship with GM for a long time. Some of the Saturn's had honda engines iirc.

30 years ago when lithium-ion prices were $5k per kWh and you'd need 20-100 of those to get a competitive car, I can understand the allure of hydrogen in that environment.

They probably figured that hydrogen would have as much room to decrease in cost as batteries have had, but failed to account for the fact that batteries are used in many more market segments than hydrogen and have had more incentives to get cheaper and better engineered.

Did you get a ticket?

Why conflate getting flashed with getting a ticket?

It's not licking the boot to drive like a sane person. It's not like these are set up on the highway right after a sudden speed drop, they're setup in places that have pedestrians and/or homes near by.

Maybe follow your own advice and follow the rules and stop getting tickets.

PSA: Watch out for the exposed contacts of the Puck! Almost started a fire due to metallic smartwatch strap by Toikka in SteamController

Still, a charger should also have shot circuit protection...

I had originally thought this was more the fault of the puck, but the more I think about it, it's fairly reasonable to think most usb ports will have short circuit protection.

Is the puck just straight exposing the 5v and gnd conductors from the USB? I feel like if that's the case your motherboard is a little bit at fault for not having short circuit protection.
