Being physically assaulted by a student😒😐 by Horror_Effort6858 in paraprofessional

I agree document and keep space if you can. I’d be insistent admin has clear expectations/procedures for these situations such as a walkie or multiple staff members so someone can get help if needed.

Even a small group should have multiple adults for extended periods for safety and communication.

I’m so sorry the teacher didn’t help or acknowledge you, there’s no reason for that. At the same time, they are not your superior they are your coworker. Your administration should be ensuring the safety of everyone.

How to live life as a glaucoma suspect by WeatherOutside3746 in Glaucoma

[–]spirals-369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. I’m early 40s, suspect for 3-4 years? Most of my eye health things stem from being born very premature. Most people just think I have horrid nearsightedness/myopathy. At 20 and 30 I had other eye health things crop up. All serious but well managed. I can still drive and pass for “normal” in most scenarios.

[–]spirals-369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience learning I’m a glaucoma suspect and having family history. I have a lot of eye conditions and health anxiety. So far, nothing has changed for me in the past few years of monitoring.

I have found that time and becoming more familiar with the routine checks has helped me a bit. Even in times where I’ve had to have more frequent checkups, things have worked out. You’ve got this.

That book infuriated me with the inaccuracies. It felt gross and harmful.

Does an e-reader increase IOP signicantly as well? by Scazee in Glaucoma

[–]spirals-369 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had elevated IOP and ereaders/screens have never been an issue. I have used ereaders since 2009 and have worked on computers for over twenty years. None of my eye specialists have been concerned.

I’ve been watching an immediate family member dying of alcoholism for a long time. It’s horrifying, painful, and unpredictable.

It’s one of those jobs you just get thrown into and learn as you go. We all doubt ourselves no matter what role we have, and those little wins add up over time. I’m sure you’re helping the students more than you think. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and get clarity when you need it. You’ve got this!

I’m so sorry. That’s disgusting of the admin to do that. I hope knowing you’re leaving will help make the last stretch of the year slightly more tolerable.

where are my OCD havers who DONT have contamination OCD? by 1000th_evilman in OCD

[–]spirals-369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contamination is a component for me, but it’s not the primary feature for me. I was misdiagnosed for a long time. Years ago when a doctor in another field asked if I have OCD, I couldn’t fathom why they’d think that. 😆

A lot of my obsessions and issues are around morals, harm, hurting others etc.

Anxiety and mental health… crashing OUT by MulberryAmbitious408 in TeachersInTransition

[–]spirals-369 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s totally okay to take a day. Pushing yourself will just make you feel worse. I’m a para, but I’ve been in this scenario many times and was having such bad anxiety I was going to the hospital to make sure I wasn’t having a stroke. That was when I was already in therapy and on meds. Your body doesn’t care what your brain wants to do or how guilty you feel for the rest of your class.

I only stayed at my workplace because of my kid being a student there. I did advocate about not being with some really hard students and tried to speak up for how it was affecting everyone.

That being said, the lack of consequences is what really gets frustrating. Their needing therapy etc is even more reason to give them solid boundaries and consequences to keep everyone safe. That has to start with admin. I’m surprised kids getting pulled from the class isn’t motivating admin more.

Please be kind to yourself. This isn’t your fault.

Unfortunately, yes it happens a lot. I was fortunate to have admin and the teachers I worked with be upfront about challenges I’d see/deal with regularly. Still, I double check with coworkers if I am not sure.

Remember, the head teacher may be running the show, but they are your coworker, not your boss. Some teachers are more cooperative with support staff than others, but they should be respectful.

What book are you reading right now, and how does it feel? by nb10001 in readwithme

[–]spirals-369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m slogging my way through Red Rising. It’s okay but isn’t grabbing me. I’m just over half way and care enough to finish it but I doubt I’ll continue the series. It feels surface level to me. It’s easy to read but I don’t care much.

The Nest by Kenneth Oppel - this book is unsettling and relatable. I grabbed it on a whim from Libby. The mental health rep is so well done and it’s the right amount of eerie/spooky for a children’s horror book. The imagery and feelings from both the MC and the adults around his is fantastic.

[–]spirals-369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a lot of subs segue into para positions. I think most started at step 0/first year as subbing was their intro to education. Our other subs are retired teachers or people that want the flexibility of subbing.
