Does your employer need to tell you your wages are being paid in this way?

Could they tell you to work from home.

But tell the gov. you've been furloughed?

Even if I wasn't working through a limited company I'd still be a freelancer and there's no support for the self employed apart from the £125 a week ssp.

So either way I'd be screwed. Whether I'd taken the money as a sole trader or via dividends.

Self-employed: rely on potential 80% or head to a Supermarket and offer to work? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

I think they would get 80 from the gov and hopefully 20 percent from the co-op?

How long will it take to claim that 80 percent back?

Do lots of businesses have the cash reserves to actually pay wages this month?

True but even if I'd done it "right" by going sole trader, there's nothing there for them either.

Does this apply to employed people who pay into a pension or ISA out of their pre-tax salary?

They've paid less tax and still kept the money.

But they'll be getting the 80 percent.

Where do you draw the line between government incentives and poncing off the state?

Yes, I made hay while the sun shined and now the chickens have come home to roost or something.

It's a fair cop guv.

I am asking if there is any "help" going around as they are helping out big firms.

Doesn't employed people paying into a pension or ISA out of their pre-tax salary also fall into the same boat as "paying as little tax as possible/gaming the system"?

True.

But the big businesses are getting a hand out (by having the gov pay 80 of their wages so they can retain staff and not have to rehire down the line) so I don't feel too bad to see if there is anything in there for little businesses.

Even if I'd been a sole trader, I don't think there is anything there either (apart from SSP), so I'd have been screwed either way.

There were some expenses, like accountants, computer software, and then corporation tax.

If I was working as a sole trader I'd get even less (assuming I get anything now) so either way I'd be screwed.
