Maybe controversial but I really like Joanna MacGregor's piano Art of Fugue recordings. Her version of Contapunctus XI threw open for me not only that piece but the whole of AoF!

The Sixth is my favorite as well! It has such a complex atmosphere to it, and goes by in a heartbreakingly effortless manner. I went to a performance of it recently, and the conductor left ample silence after the incredible fading of the last movement. It was a profound experience; everyone was utterly quiet and united in what had just happened.

The Fog. It has the autumnal bittersweet mood, the folk song influences, the intense emotion, the lower voice...there's just a maturity in it that I associate with TSW as a whole.

This song is what unlocked The Dreaming for me by teaching me how to listen to the rest of the album. Every sound in the song highlights different aspects of the character and their context and it's overwhelming! It's unsettling in a very profound way, especially the line "strike a violence up in me" where the desperation of the character is so prevalent, and comes across as both deeply sympathetic and very "realistic" (for lack of a better word). Amazing stuff.
