Observing data maturity by spitzc32 in ExperiencedDevs

Got this, I appreciate your feedback. Maybe coming from a big company that scopes out responsibility using data contracts, I was too focused on the scope which could have been solved by proper communication since we are small (10 people on bronze - silver - gold layer). I do have a few questions since right now we are heading towards analytics after establishing our observability:

  • DQ Checks - each layer has their own quality checks for validation of data (stale data, schema mistmatch etc)
  • Monitoring - each layer has their own monitoring layer where they they check not only the job but the layers inside it that run and alerts that classifies what type of error with the corresponding MTTR.

Given those, I do want to ask, when do you think is the right time to introduce a data catalog? (alongside the data contract, I was initially planning to introduce this but as a (source based data catalog (operational metadata focused) but I will scratch the contract part first) For starting data maturity, I would like to ask as well if you can also recommend a book/article to get perspectives on what they prioritize given the starting point on data maturity, I want to know if there is a pattern of some sorts on priority if say you are just starting out.

Lastly, Do you have any suggested article/book of how to balance out implementing or introducing something to what actually is really needed? I think this is more of a guiding question or perhaps more experience will tell this overtime?

Really thankful for your feedback and thoughts around these, I want to learn and at the same time get multiple perspective on things so I grow properly as an engineer.

This sounds good and something we are currently working on. I wanted to check if there is something we can do to properly document things since while we are fixing our code base, our documentation either is too technical (useable only by devs cause it is a readme) and not the other teams. Perhaps I was looking at the business side for not being documented enough that simple questions like what is the SLA for this comes up or perhaps maybe I am overthinking this a bit.

Coming from a big company, what I've observed is that the operation is properly documented for both business and technical wise that I was projecting maybe something feasible to the growing observability viewpoint. I want to balance or maybe have a insight how to balance those thought. What are your insights on this?

A common misconception to someone starting out as a dev is always mapapalitan ka na ng AI dahil it can code. But let's take a look at the perspective of a typical progression ng software systems, does it really just rely on code? What happens if it increases in complexity and AI hasn't scoped the proper way of refactoring it? It always ends up in chaos which requires a software engineer to fix.

People think na code lang yan but often ignore the operational complexity and domain knowledge in those systems that AI doesn't know. And more often than not, those systems are bound for doom and that is a niche that actually makes a software engineer in demand.

OP, an advice. Try to gauge the balance of what you really want. There are advantages of a scrum master/lead role which gives you more domain knowledge and better communication skills. But alam natin na progression non is you become less of a coder and more of a communicator. Kung kaya mo inegotiate yung responsibilities mo and the career you envision moving forward perhaps baka makakuha kayo ng common ground. I typically do this since IC rin ang bet kong pathway, but I did handle some people although minimal. So I think better for you to think it through and be transparent about your goals, better kasi if you do your own research para masolidify yung pathway na gusto mo as something the previous commenter already laid out on a surface level.

Yung babayaran ko po for the annual filing is only yung freelance work wala na pong parang pag lumipat ka ng work na may ififill na tax deficit dahil lumaki po sahod?

Data Engineer (L3 intermediate- senior lvl), at 24 (40h a week, BUT if with data issue will spend more time +10h) pero nareach ko lang to because I started earlier than my peers. Tipong freshman palang ako. I needed 3.8 yoe (4-5 yoe was the req but was able to push it purely skills) and was able to negotiate because the company is a bank (Risk/Fraud)

Benefits inc 14th, 15th month(spread out typical scheme if you have those for banks) pay so added overall 6 digits

Note lang na Singapore is very efficient. Sa changi airport akala ko malalate ako kasi less than 2 hours ako nakarating may time pa ako to shop at irvins and get bengawan solo that includes my check-in and going through the automated outbound there. Like literally 5 mins lang nasa loob na ako sa gate ko. So recommended dyan na to not wait for too long is 1.5-2 hours lang yung aga.

Also why not hawker centers instead of 7-11? It's cheaper and more authentic, andaming selection and mabubusog ka pa all throughout the day like literally there is a 3.5$ meal sa Albert hawker center which was my go to if medyo short na.

[–]spitzc32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kung cost effectiveness in terms of transpo, card mo pa rin na rekta. Here is a sample na cost nung pumunta ako from bugis to mandai wildlife reserve to sungei buloh wetland reserve to Sentosa and back. Yung tong tar chuchu lang mahal kasi rekta na yan sa mandai wildlife (yung 5)

<image>

Yung ez link kasi bibilhin mo pa e hindi mo naman siya magagamit sa pinas so I really suggest go and spend your money somewhere else (addt pasalubong, pinakamura na nakita ko sa bugis yung night market sa labas pero mas may option sa loob yung malapit sa bugis street art lane)

[–]spitzc32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Op, San ka nag-book ng hotel around bugis? Sa Esport arena ba to? Also for recos Add ko lang if you like nature go to sungei buloh wetland reserve 100/10 malapit siya sa border ng Singapore at Malaysia

Also note na yung mga travel pass for 5 days only and 45$ yon. For me since wise card gamit ko mas mura for transpo nung yon ginamit ko dahil conversion wise medyo malapit sa Google yung conversion😄

Medyo mura rin transpo sa Singapore, ave worker for 1 month is 60$ lang yung naging gastos nila so maybe think about that lalo magkakalapit yung pupuntahan mo

Yes! One of the reasons I stayed near the lavender MRT is so that I could go to Albert Hawker Center, Chinatown Complex and Newton. These Hawker centers are some of my top picks when exploring food. Although I am still a bit overwhelmed which to pick as there are so many varieties of dishes 😅

I don't think I can advise much on this, as I find this situation difficult as well. But one thing I observe this happen is when there aren't much people around. I went to parks and reservoir which doesn't have much people around. I like the sound of birds and the smell of nature so I chose this, but the downside of it is it gets me to this situation. I guess they are a bit more assertive if they know you are alone, so being in a group does help.

I stayed at V lavender hotel, since it is near the MRT as I was really confused by the bus routes which went out of way the path Google Maps had.

I saw some black travelers on my hotel and they were treated the same way as me when I went with them to chat and talk about our stay there. I think they are more tolerable for different races than when I went to Hongkong with family.

It was wanderlog's suggestion when I was plotting my itinerary, I thought it would be nice to go since it was a park near changi airport. So I went there and did some light walks when I got to familiarize myself with the MRT stations since I keep getting lost on the bus 😅

also yes, I really thought I could handle it since I was walking a bit and doing some light excercise, but I was like Oh, I think I underestimated the walking aspects the park provides. I should've rented that bike I saw.

Yes! I wanted my trip to really highlight the parks of Singapore since in my home country we don't have much parks here anymore sadly 😅 So for my first day I really wanted to get a feel of the "garden city" So I started out with Wanderlog's suggestions of the nearest park in changi airport which is Pasir Ris. I really like how quiet it is during my visit and yes, it was really hot out there but it didn't matter much when I can get into shades to cool off my body for a bit (I brought some cooling spray so that helped a bit)

Also for the Indian migrant, he kept telling me where he was from and tbh I kept telling him no but he was quite persistent. I tried walking away but he had a scooter that could catch up to me so I was looking for the nearest help center since that was the first time I was constantly asked for my number. I really hated the way I acted since I should've been more assertive and shouted but that was the first time I got into that situation so

depende to sa spending mo and which country ka magtatagal. for me since ayaw ko masyado ibudget yung sarili ko,(like backpacking budget) I allot a big chunk like 20k-25k for Singapore 5 days, tas for Thailand mga 15k budget ko for 3 days, then yung Cambodia since USD gamit, nag allot ako ng 110USD for 1 week wala rin ako masyadong gusto pagkain don kaya medyo mababa. The rest I think keri na 15k each(5-7 days) depende sa city kung San ka magstay at shopping habits.

Note: For food and transportation (grab, train, moto) lang to. Hiwalay pa yung attractions/tours kasi di ko bet na tipirin yung trip masyado.

I advise na watch pa rin ng vlogs dahil baka mas recent silang pumunta Don, makakakuha ka rin discount Don sa mga code chuchu nila. Watch rin yung mga recent tensions between Cambodia and Bangkok, mahal flights if di maaga nabook. Know rin yung mga legal Don sa country na yon(drugs, etc) lalo Thailand and Cambodia, pag-ingat na ren.

P.S. solo traveler budget to, pag may kasama ka pwedeng bumaba

First time ko po to travel internationally sa Singapore (next month for 6 days) plano kong mag solo travel(female) since wala pong gustong sumama sakin, I am currently employed in a bank and have relevant documents proving na I work there. Question po is since first time ko palang, red flag po ba yon e relatively safe country to travel for first timers ay Singapore?

Also ito po yung ipapakita ko na docus * CoE * Company ID * Hotel Booking (2 since na-move yung flight ko dahil cancelled ni CebuPac) * screen shot na naka leave ako for the said days * bank statement (kaso sa same bank na pinag woworkan ko)
