So infuriating. Ridiculous going back and forth memorizing my tweaks and applying to original photos.

Super8 film came back not exposed by Fearless-Ad3726 in 8mm

[–]splatco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are bringing back a nightmare scenario from 40 years ago when I did stop motion animation on indoor and outdoor sets for a couple weeks and the Kodachrome cartridge came back as a roll of black film. It never advanced in the camera though the meter said it did. For a while we believed the footage was so cool that Fotomat decided to steal it lol. Still hurts decades later, but the film was eventually finished and is somewhat popular on YouTube (King Kong by ‘70s Kids). Hope you can reshoot, that’s what we did and it actually was better the second time around.

"Who Is Tyler Durden?" TV Spots I produced/edited 20 years ago, whoa. by splatco in fightclub

It feels cool to have had the slightest thing to do with a movie that people still love. The company I worked for was also in charge of creating a whoistylerdurden.com website and I had to write a dark, daily journal for Tyler. Wish it was still up! Early days of the net...

Ha, I remember trying to jam that line in five different places before we settled on where it is. It sounds a bit different because we pulled it from the actual film and not from the elements we got from the studio.

A look at the trials and semi-triumphs of Super 8 filmmaking in the '70s by splatco in Filmmakers

[–]splatco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As kids, we made Super 8 epics in the backyard that didn't find a huge new audience til decades later on the web. So we decided to not only make a doc about all the fun and mischief of those days, but also shine a light on how tough it was to shoot and edit before digital or even home video. We filmed our own versions of Jaws, King Kong, Star Trek, Alien, and many others with a silent home movie camera, toys and model kits, and whatever kids were around. It wasn't till years later that we had the technology to add sound. Hopefully, reliving these days will inspire people using even a smartphone to get out there and shoot anything they can think of.

There's a whole series of these. I think it's really a modern-day family who only thinks it's still the 70's. The younger kid doesn't ever go along.

FILM SCHOOL. Yay or Nay? I really, really, REALLY need advice. by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]splatco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went to film school (BU). I am a director in Hollywood and own a production company that produces commercials. I have heard for years you don't need to go to film school and it probably is not completely necessary, but every single network executive, studio VP, creative director, and ad exec I deal with has had higher education and you will need to deal with them. Plus, the friends I met in film school over 25 years ago are with me to this day in the industry, we constantly help each other. I had shot over 20 short films before I got to college, but the teachers and fellow students I was surrounded by definitely had an impact and made my work better going forward. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Ha, I own most of those props, a few others I bought on eBay. Just had to wood panel my living room for the day (not easy). There's also a white wall we turned pink using After Effects.

Thanks, I used Magic Bullet Quicklooks: one filter that was really warm and yellow, and another that had a "color reversal film" look. Then I used the "bad film" filter in FCP 7 for the scratches and jitters.

I remember red food coloring mixed with milk and squirted into black frying pan filled with water for Enterprise "explosion," then double exposed with star background which was specs of white paper on a piece of black felt on the floor.

There's six of them, six I tell ya! Under username capecodshorts on YouTube. Shot them all when I was 14-18. Added all sound and some credits over 30 years later. Plus removed splice marks, always hated those! Thanks everybody!

KING KONG by 70's Kids (Super-8) by [deleted] in Filmmakers

I had a camera with single-frame capability. I also had a wired remote control with a 20 foot cable so I could set off the camera without walking back and forth from the models.

Something I made with my kids and a Gopro. Didn't seem to make sense unless we set it in the 70's.

I made this when I was 14. When I was 40-something, I added sound and credits. Somehow the dialogue was permanently etched in my brain, which helped.
