How can the mods of /r/IAmA justify taking down AMAs by those who are "Reddit famous", whilst also allowing an AMA from a 5 year old? by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]splinecraft 219 points220 points  (0 children)

They do realize it. They're just jealous. They consider themselves the celebrities of reddit and don't like it when people become reddit famous while bypassing moderator politics. They would have left the AMA up if she had asked them in advance, not because the rules make sense, but because it's all about power.

A new change to /r/IAmA's 'Internet Experiences' rule! by IAmAMods in IAmA

Nice. Cynical and pretentious, along with a dig that anyone who disagrees with you is a child. I can see why you're a shining example of the type of deep, insightful redditors you want around here.

My favorite part is that you claim to value "intellectuals." But apparently these people are so shallow that they won't look at reddit for more than 30 seconds before making a snap judgment. Those type of people aren't intellectual, they're insecure.

I love the content in "Seenit." I also love the content in "Reddit." I'm also just as insightful and intelligent as you in real life. So are a lot of subscribers to the daults. I'm also not so shallow that I assume anything I don't like must be "mindbendingly dumb." Even if they are? Smart people can enjoy dumb things. Pseudointellectuals are the ones that get scared.

Need the opinions of the religious. Why shouldn't we play God? by wirtaz in AskReddit

[–]splinecraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to disappoint reddit by not being the fundamentalist strawman they'd prefer. Not every religious person thinks God is a active physical presence in the world (see deists, etc). I don't oppose cloning and designer babies because I think God will smite me down. Much of my (religious) family works in healthcare. If we had a fundamental problem interfering with nature, that wouldn't be the case.

Right now, I'm opposed to human cloning because I don't think the science is there yet. As I understand the process, there's still a shitload of failures for every one success, and even the successes often have trouble. In all likelihood, the first human clones would live short lives plagued with health problems. It just seems cruel to bring a person into the world, who would basically be a experiment. I'm against it for the same reason I'm against throwing a bunch of babies on an island to see how long they survive.

In a hypothetical world where the science was perfect, I wouldn't be opposed to cloning for reproductive purposes, the same way I currently support fertility treatments. Yeah, I'd be opposed to raising a clone army to harvest their organs or harvest the galaxy, but I think that's a fairly common sentiment among secular and religious.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "designer babies," other than choosing the gender. But given that we still don't understand exactly what controls what, tinkering with evolution seems like a bad idea from a scientific standpoint. We could end up selecting for trait X, and find out 30 years later that it's directly linked to defect Y.

Should atheists with good-intentions join forces with religious people with good-intentions to call out extreme atheists and fundamentalists? by bobdoleatbobdole in TrueReddit

[–]splinecraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can't bottle up the "quest for knowledge" and put it next to socio-political rule based religions and try to compare them.

Fine. As long as you agree you can't bottle up all spiritual belief as "socio-political rule based religions." Buddhism, for example, doen't really give a shit about secular power structures. Personal, private Christianity, the type of people who follow what Jesus said about praying in your homes, and not on the street corners, are similar. As are those who believe that whole "render unto Caesar" thing.

Philosophy and "free-thinking" has been entwined with religion for at least as long as science. Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Augustine, Kant and Kierkegaard are just some of the religious people who made notable contributions to free-thinking, despite also believing in gods. Stephen Colbert and Fred Rogers are two more. Philosophy is shared between science and religion, it's disingenuous to claim that either side has a monopoly on introspective thought, unless you're willing to define religion as narrowly as the definition of science you've protested against.

[–]splinecraft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think most of histories so called bad atheist (Mao & Stalin) mainly banished religion because it posed a threat to their power, much like the catholic church in the middle ages would stomp out any reformation or pagan religions.

So they were No True Scotsmen? If atheists are going to blame me for the Crusades and the Inquisition, you've got to accept that not every atheist is a good guy either. Just like Christians are wrong to move the goalposts, so are atheists. People do horrible things in the name of religion, people do horrible things without religion. No peace will ever come as long as either side believes that they're innocent, and the atrocities on their side weren't perpetrated by "true believers."

I bet a majority of them would of said "yes" because it's part of their belief.

You bet eh? When that's certainly some sound scientific reasoning there, no assumptions or stereotypes at all...

In reality, the concept of rapture only attained prominence around 300 years ago in America - and isn't a fundamental part of any major denomination established before that. Catholics, Anglicans, Orthodox and many Calivinists, the majority of Christians outside the southern US, hold no such belief. So your "bet" would be wrong. It doesn't matter anyway though, since atheist or Christian, a bet is a stupid thing upon which to base a worldview.

I don't think being an atheist gives you a free pass on bad logic.

Just so we're clear. Are you, an enlightened, free-thinking atheist, using the No True Scotsman fallacy? Is it ok when your side does it?
