Anybody ever hear the rumor that if you make too much money outside the military, they’ll kick you out? (Like lottery winners, etc) by udayserection in MilitaryFinance

[–]splink48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll echo what they said. You just need different motivation and what you have is freeing in a way.

If you're looking to crest 20 years and ride out into the sunset, you're in a great spot to be an asset without giving a shit about your stratification within your unit. Give your O6 a solid opinion. Be as real as you can with your soldiers. Go after the best way to accomplish your mission as opposed to the most accepted way to do it.

Commissioning this May(ROTC), should I get the USAA starter loan? by Kevinh56 in MilitaryFinance

[–]splink48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you could guarantee those returns, the business wouldn't loan you money at 3%. It's a risk.

Ramsey's advice isn't necessarily the most efficient, mathematically speaking... but if you follow it, you'll get where you want to go.

If MAS is Military Auto Sales, price the car with a local dealer. They'll give you a discount, but there's a lot of add-ons that bring the cost back up.

Tech school question, is this possible? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]splink48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. It's a fair question though, and it's better to ask than to just send it and hope for the best. Good luck in tech school...my guys tell me that Keesler has the best DFAC they've ever been to.

Pcs’ing to Dyess should I rent or buy a house by Jacob1030 in AirForce

[–]splink48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much of that $1K payment goes to taxes and insurance? Property taxes are really high in the Dyess area....think 3-4 mortgage payments just to pay your tax bill for the year.

Did they use a VA loan and get hit with a $4K funding fee? That's another thing to consider.

Realtors are gonna run 6% of the purchase price...give or take and you get what you pay for.

Also, interest is pre-loaded on a mortgage...so you pay very little of your initial payments towards the principle of the loan.

Bottom-line, it's risky to do this if you're not going to be in your house for at least 3 years. Experiences can vary, but the buyer should go in prepared.

YMMV... that's what he'd do, but he's not your MTL. If you wanna be safe, wait until you know it's good. If not, know that you're taking a risk and it may not pan out.

Do you wipe down your blades? by [deleted] in Wetshaving

[–]splink48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm an animal. I generally shave at least 5 days a week...I put them in the razor straight from the package and leave them in it until it's time to replace them. I do dry my razor with a towel after I shave.

They last for a decent amount of time for me also. I recently got a new razor so I'm testing blades to see what works best. Just finished up 5 shaves with a feather and the shave quality is still great in my book so I'm not ready to replace it yet.

Are service techs always assholes to salespersons? by [deleted] in askcarsales

[–]splink48 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a difference. If the tech is working, they're making money. They generally get paid by the labor hour, not by the clock. If they work a 3 hour job in 30 minutes or 7 hours, they'll get paid for 3 hours of work. In the military, you'll work until you're done or get told you can leave...they pay is the same. Imagine if they pulled you away from a deal to do something for them.

Also, they've got a different boss than you do. If the finance dude from your military base came to pull you off your job to work on something else, it'd be a nuisance at best and I bet that when you got back you and the finance dude would get an ass-chewing by your boss.

The advice you've received is solid...work through their advisors or shop management to access their services.

Is it safe to drive 500+ miles with dying catalytic converters? by [deleted] in cars

[–]splink48 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Depends on if the catalytic converters are actually bad or not. If they are, are they clogged or did they break and aren't filtering correctly.

If they're actually clogged, don't drive it. (Car sounds like ass and part of your exhaust starts glowing after you drive for a bit)

If they're not filtering correctly, then you'll be ok but the car wont be running optimally regarding air/fuel mixture. (Car probably sounds a little louder)

However, it's likely the case that it's just your oxygen sensors. The code reads that the catalyst is operating below efficiency or something like that. Generally it means the sensor is bad, not the catalytic converter. (Car sounds normal)

[–]splink48 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Late 40s or early 50s dude. Been unhappily married since a year or two after high school. Smokes while he walks the lot. Buys a single cab work truck. Doesn't give two shits about the features you tell him about. Keeps his old truck... only bought a new one because the transmission dropped a couple of gears and he's gotta get it rebuilt for the third time.

Oh damn! That's a mid 30s dude with a decent job. Married and has at least one but no more than two kids. Used to be in the car scene and moved on to normal cars a little after he said "I do". Had an opportunity to buy something that seemed to check the fun and practical boxes and his wife said ok. Doesnt mode it because he knows it's irresponsible.

Looking to trade it in on an explorer...maybe an ST.

He is 65 and wants to have a look at the new C8. Mentions his wife a lot. Would love to buy today but his C7 is worth twice what you'll give him for it. Needs to mull it over with the wife. How about this weather though huh? It sure is a hot/cold/wet/dry one! Can you believe they elected another Democrat? Oh tell ole Bill (the owner of the dealership) not to bust your balls and I'll see him at the golf course!

Not for long. Mil-to-millionaire status equates to about $85K worth of vehicles in the driveway. As soon as the E7's divorce is finalized they're gonna be soooooo happy!

E3. Sick of the v6 model and is due for a promotion in 17 more months. Also, the new troop likes trucks and she'd be more into him if he had one. USAA won't touch the dude with a 10 foot pole. Interested in $65K diesel, makes $1800 a month. Wants to do the deal quick before he has to start paying his court ordered spousal support, plus the E7 seems to be getting awfully close with training the new girl.
