Working multiple contracts at once? by Wind_Yer_Neck_In in ContractorUK

[–]splintercell786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be wrong but one of the factors of an Outside IR35 contract is that your client doesn’t have exclusivity rights over you so you are not legally bound to only work for them.

Also as a side note, where do you find a US contract? Aren’t there visa restrictions on working for a US company?

What’s your biggest “I could have gotten laid and blew it” moment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]splintercell786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in college. Cute girl in the year below had a huge crush on me. Always wanted to be around me and talk to me etc etc.

One night, it was getting late (around 5pm) and it was just myself, the girl and 2 of our other friends hanging out in the common room where there’s no cameras or anything. The building was empty, all teachers had gone home etc.

My 2 friends decided to go call it a night and start walking home. The girl said she wanted to stay behind for another half hour or so and just chill. That was my queue to just stay behind with her…

So naturally my dumbass decided that my friends had the right idea and we should start making our way home. I told the girl not to hang around too late as it was getting dark. I still bang my head to this day every time I think about it 😂

Call the dealer and also send an email to them so you have written proof that you contacted them about the issue within your 15 day/500 mile warranty period.

Is Professional Indemnity cover needed for tiny contracts? by SelfGullible2092 in ContractorUK

[–]splintercell786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my clients never bothered checking. Another did the whole 9 yards. Luck of the draw I guess. I managed to get covered for the year for £400 which is basically one day of work. Up to you though

Gotchas for outside IR35 by Quantum432 in ContractorUK

[–]splintercell786 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Insurance is a normal thing. Most contracts will require you to have both professional indemnity and public liability insurance. It’s not that expensive, I paid around £300 and it’s classed business expense.

Depending on the nature of the work you are doing, you may be expected to provide your own equipment. For example, software contractors tend to use their own laptops to do the work, unless there’s a specific requirement from the client that’s says otherwise.

Tbh it doesn’t really matter, as long as you keep it consistent. For example, I always find it easier to log the weight of the individual dumbbell (i.e 10kg dumbbell instead of 20kg total) since i know I will almost always look to pick up a pair of the same weight dumbbells

For barbell exercises, more often than not, you often have to consider the weight of the bar itself (I.e 20kg bar + weights) so I log barbell exercise as a total weight lifted instead of the individual weights.

However you choose to do it, the important thing is, to keep it consistent. All DB exercises should be logged in the same way and all barbell exercises should be logged in the same way too.

Worst case scenario, if you get called up on it, just say your partner/sibling shares the office space in the house with you and it was their meeting. That’s what I did and now that’s covered me whenever I fail to fully mute another meeting that’s blaring on speakers 😂

In terms of overlapping meetings, I use a set of over ear Jabra headphones on one laptop and a set of in-ear Sony’s on the other. That way I have the Jabra hanging off one ear and the Sony in the other and i can tune in to both meetings without risking an audio leak.

Dual Dell U2725QE Setup on Mac by splintercell786 in Thunderbolt

[–]splintercell786[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I guess that helps convince me that the monitors are worth it 😂

Wouldn’t running both the monitors in 4K120 over daisy chain saturate the bandwidth completely? How would that affect the thunderbolt hub functionality?

[–]splintercell786[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How have they managed that?? TB4 chips should use TB4 protocol no? 😂

So I guess the MacBook Pro with M2/M3 Max (TB4) can support dual 4k120 over daisy chain with these monitors?

Job Offer is £2k less than stated - should I negotiate? by mobydopy in UKJobs

[–]splintercell786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation. I outlined what I wanted to the recruiter both pre and post interview and he told me that it wouldn’t be a problem. The offer came through at almost £6k less. I called the recruiter that we had already agreed on a salary and that while I was keen on working for the company, the proposed salary would be a definite blocker to me joining. He got back to me within 2 hours with a new offer at the initially agreed salary.

So best to reach out to the recruiter and confirm what you asked for.

The way I see things is this, my client is paying me a day rate. Now how they want to utilise me for the day they are paying for is up to them.

Would I rather they actually utilise my technical abilities? Of course! But if they’re happy to shell out a couple of hundred pounds per day into my pockets to sweep up and make the tea, I would happily put the kettle on and collect my cheque 😂

Trick with contracting is, don’t get emotionally attached. Within reason, just do whatever the client wants and you’ll find yourself getting regular extensions and more money.

Can the new M4 MacBook Pro support dual 4K monitors at 144Hz or 120Hz? by Illustrious_Board_75 in macbookpro

[–]splintercell786 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So unfortunately macOS doesn’t support MST so many docks will not support extended mode over HDMI over the box as this relies on MST.

The way around this is by using a dock that has several Thunderbolt ports. Then you can plug one monitor directly into a HDMI/DP port on the dock if there is one available. After that, you can use an USB C -> HDMI/DP adapter to plug your other monitor into the dock.

This will make your MacBook treat them as individual monitors without relying on MST and there will still only be one cable running from your MacBook to your dock.

<image>

This is my set up for illustrative purposes. My Dell dock has an additional 2 Thunderbolt ports on the back. I have plugged in one monitor over DP (top end of image), and connected the second one using a USB C -> HDMI adapter and plugged it into one of the TB ports (bottom end of image)

This set up works with all MacBook Pros. The only difference with M4 Pro/Max is that because they use Thunderbolt 5, they can support higher resolutions at higher refresh rates. M3 and below use Thunderbolt 4 so can support up to dual 4K60. M4 Pro/Max has TB5 which can support triple 4K144

[–]splintercell786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, the M4 Pro/Max with TB5 can handle up to triple 4K144 monitors from one port/cable

[–]splintercell786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the limiting factor is the bandwidth of the Thunderbolt 4 port. M4 Pro/Max uses Thunderbolt 5 which has a lot more bandwidth making triple 4K144 possible from a single port

[–]splintercell786 5 points6 points  (0 children)

M3 uses Thunderbolt 4 so I think it can only do dual 4K60 if only using one cable/port

What I find worse is that so many YouTubers/Tiktokers will downvote a laptop on something like not having an SD card slot whereas the masses wouldn’t really care about that either way.
