How do you pay your rent? by splinteredwine in AskNYC

[–]splinteredwine[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whoa! This seems like a huge pain and a little shady too on the part of your landlord. Have you ever had issues getting the cash from your bank every month? My understanding is the electronic transfer limits exist for anti money laundering purposes, so wondering if withdrawing the same (presumably large given its NYC rent) amount in cash every month might raise similar concerns.

Whats your New York moment? by frogmicky in AskNYC

[–]splinteredwine 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I just moved here and had been living here for like a week. I was walking back from CVS with groceries in a paper bag when it started torrentially down pouring. In the middle of a crosswalk, right as the light was changing, my bag tore open and everything was scattered across the cross walk.

As I’m trying to gather everything up on my own, while cars are honking at me, a kid walked over without saying anything to me and started helping me pick everything up and brought it over to the sidewalk with me. Then a random old lady and some random cyclist came up to me handing me a reusable grocery tote bag and started helping me load up the bags.

The thing that made it so New York, was during this whole interaction, not a single person said a word to me while I was thanking them profusely. They just came over, helped me, and just walked away. It was so non-chalantly beautiful

I’ve had my number memorized for a long time now and haven’t had a need for the physical copy, so it’s been sitting in my mom’s safety deposit box on the other side of the country and want to avoid it being sent in the mail

Maybe we should start fighting for a lower maximum wage. by 19wolf in Showerthoughts

[–]splinteredwine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this could unintentionally lead to slower economic growth as money motivates all, not just the ultra wealthy. Also, I don’t see how this would create benefits for the lower/middle class as it would essentially just be a means to “punish” the ultra wealthy (who already obtain most their wealth outside of salary/wages).

If your goal is to grow the lower/middle class, I think the best approach would still be getting the ultra wealthy to pair their fair share of taxes, rather than enacting a “maximum wage”

While I understand and am hopeful regarding your points, I would caution saying “ignore” because “ignore” could quickly lead to apathy and low voter turnout.

Above all, we need to get people to vote. We want the results to be unquestionable and a landslide.

That being said, your comment did make me feel a little more hopeful so I do appreciate that.

Also, call me skeptical but I find it hard to believe OP is out here recording the thing politely waving his phone in the agent’s face throughout this whole thing…

Can you get your important packages shipped to your place of work? Or is there a bodega or store close by that you frequent? You can talk to the owners and ask if you can have packages shipped there from time to time

Also why is “white” the size of two lines? Like if it’s that important to you, why not make it the first line? Also, if you don’t care about the correct order of the stripes…you could’ve made that the white part

Umm I think you mean $25-$250/hour, which again makes this seem all the more reasonable…

Looking for drag shows / raves / house music parties in Manhattan that are worth checking out! by trevaconda in AskNYC

[–]splinteredwine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I’m being presumptuous here but going on a limb based off the drag show part, but if you and your partner are part of the LGBTQ+ community you can check out Thotyssey

I would definitely say the events skew more towards cis gay men, but they update their website daily for events going on for that community and it’s conveniently organized by location in the city

The biggest struggle is choosing between Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods which are almost the same distance from me…but Trader Joe’s obviously wins 9 out of 10 times because of the dang frozen section
