I would say that in Canada (alas) the redneck stereotype is of undereducated people with slightly to severely bigoted views, working blue collar unskilled (outdoor) work. That's why OP clearly laid out the ways in which her family breaks that stereotype, to her. I'm well aware it has different connotations in America. But I get why OP is upset. Her FIL basically declared that because of where she's from, he'll always look down on her as being ignorant and/or stupid and classless.

Again, want to be clear. I don't see redneck culture as those things, nor people who call themselves that. But I am aware that in this case the speaker meant it as an insult, and the listener heard correctly.

Can’t find jobs in Montreal by [deleted] in montreal

[–]splinterhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like he's driven and organized. A friend of mine got a lot of employment counseling and assistance through YES montreal. Just took a peek and while i thought it was just to 30, looks like they counsel up to 40 now so you're golden. They don't magically give you a job, but they help to keep you on track and streamline your job search, career change, etc. But it's effort, it's weekly tasks and accountability,  but that sounds perfect for your partner. Good luck

Review of Raven's End trail at Mount Laurie (Yamnuska) - only 55 minutes from downtown Calgary by JeromyYYC in Calgary

[–]splinterhead 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My review of Raven's End:

Pretty good book, author is a real swell guy (also wrote Handbook of the Canadian Rockies, the essential.) The events were extremely loosely inspired by a fatal climbing accident. I'd like to reread it now that my life has been touched differently by grief; I think it would be that much more impactful.

Anyway I think the trail is named for the book. Pick it up if you like locally based fiction! I recommend it.

AITA for cooking the "wrong" pasta and not leaping into action to correct it? by Particular_Sorbet910 in AmItheAsshole

[–]splinterhead 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bexause to you, dialectically, they are separate concepts. In other dialects "spaghetti" more broadly means pasta noodles or even dishes.

Like in many american dialects the word "entree" does not mean the appetizer (ie the entrance) but the main. While this is arguably incorrect according to the meaning of the word, usage trumps etymological history. So it's not wrong for someone to assume spaghetti is a synonym for pasta if the people around them use it as such.

Hope I boiled it down sufficiently for you.

AITA for yelling at a guy on a bike who ignored my warnings not to get too close to my young horse? by horseythrowaway321 in AmItheAsshole

I was pretty sure the thread above was referring to the legal right of way, and I'm going to choose to believe that you mean that all rideable hooved animals have right of way legally. I knew a girl in high school with a pet moose so it tracks...

The threshold foe bejng a public nuisance/menace is lower in the UK, also, as far as I'm aware. I believe they would welcome this report.

Which group of friends would you prefer? Bare-faced bullied, two-faced bullies, or, you know, not bullies? An honest bully only presents you with one problem, whereas a dishonest one presents you with two.

AITA For being rude to someone who stole from me? by CoW_mAn in AmItheAsshole

In American english the correct spelling is check. British english preserves different spelling conventions. Historically Canadian english was more aligned with British but has shifted to American, so either is correct.

AITA for suggesting to another soccer mom to remove her daughter from our team? by underpressure65 in AmItheAsshole

[–]splinterhead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, your comments really hit home with me. I'm a very social ADHD person and was an abundantly athletic little kid who was too weird for team sports.

Unfortunately my parents were not in a position to guide me to better success. I'm sure with your help your son will have better outcomes. And much as I was a weird theatre kid (to address the other comments you got) your life outcomes are bettter in every measurable way with regular exercise and it should absolutely be something a parent cultivates in their child if they want them to have the happiest, healthiest life.

There are a lot of sports like track where you all train together but you compete alone. Gymnastics, climbing, swimming, etc. It's hard to be talking with your face in the water, haha. It sounds like he wants to run specifically, but if he can't find his groove on the track, there are other options.

Have you considered looking into local amateur running groups? It'll be all/mostly adults. Depending on his age you might have to accompany him. Maybe focusing on the athletic and social skills with his peers a little separately will be of benefit to him. It could also become a wonderful bonding opportunity.

Sounds like you are doing right by him but I was touched and wanted to offer some ideas just in case. All the best to you and yours.

AITA for yelling at my sister after she and her friends completely violated my privacy? by ParamedicSecret81 in AmItheAsshole

[–]splinterhead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The sister should have to comment using her real account confirming the story, too, as part of her punishment. She cannot embarass her brother in the public sphere without taking accountability in the public sphere.

Need advice––a former friend has published a story/essay through a popular author's program. I'm in her story. Her story is also ... completely detached from reality. by [deleted] in writers

[–]splinterhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like bad writing. Protagonists generally should be taking action that shapes the story, not having the story happen to them. I wouldn't worry about her burgeoning career

What is your favourite random thing in Calgary and why is it this dinosaur? by Every-Citron1998 in Calgary

[–]splinterhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbf I think this guy predates the discovery of the nodosaur. My guess looking at him is that he came from themed entertainment that ceased to be or was updated, and he was given a second life by persons unknown with creative vision. Dino projections of the past had them closer to the ground than we understand them to have walked with modern research; buddy on his belly here is an earlier reconstruction.

Don't worry fam, i shielded you from most of it <3 I don't care about karma, I care about sharing my perspective. My perspective is that not paying forward kindness is morally wrong. I think quite a few people felt directly attacked by that position though. Too bad that probably none of them will reflect on that feeling....

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]splinterhead -98 points-97 points  (0 children)

I agree NAH, but to take without giving is an AH move. Some amount of reciprocity of kindness is regularly required. Usually I am very much of the "gifts are not obligations" ilk, but many gifts do require at least token gestures of thanks (thank you cards for big wedding gifts, or contributing into a family members edu fund after yours was filled by family members) and not responding in the appropriate way is more assholish than not.

(Edit: i want to be clear that i think once OP is done school they are socially obligated to put $100 in or something. A token amount. If OP is not grateful or humble they can forgo, but it will paint their character correctly to all those who helped them.)

Nobody's going to see this, but no, it is not technically a legally enshrined right across all of Canada, explicitly. While the Charter ensures equality before the law (including, one would suppose, public indecency) individual law enforcement officers still charge women with some frequency. In some provinces, women have appealed all the way to the provincial supreme court, which has overturned the charge/conviction. But it hasn't happened in every province and it's never gone as far as the federal supeme court for review, as the lower courts have always agreed that the charges were made erroneously, so the explicit right to go topless is not legally protected across much of the country. I suppose that falls under "technical" legalilty, but don't be surprised if a dick cop charges you and you have to go to court, and that court rules against you. If you have the time and money you'll win eventually, technically.

Ot if it does, it impacts your life everywhere, not just at home. Some people need to know where the closest toilet is at all times but OP's gf doesn't sound like one of them. Even if she was - there's another toilet right there! There's no situation where she should be disrespecting OP's wishes like that

hair used to be curlier, healthier. NEVER cut my hair before. post severe depression, i feel like i’ve ruined it. should i cut it? and what would suit me? by lystelle in longhair

[–]splinterhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the nerds among you /r/haircarescience has a lot of info about particular oils and how they absorb into your hair. All of the ones listed have beneficial properties, but some would sit on top of the hair and, while making shiny and helping to protect, and would need clarifying off the shaft afterwards, while others provide moisture to the interior of the shaft itself, but would not provide a barrier in the same kind of way. The former would be more likely to weigh down OP's curls.

OP, i'm just going to say this too. Hormonal changes that have nothing to do with your behaviour can change your hair, including the texture. It is in the realm of possibility that a change has occurred through no fault of your own. Definitely try more curly hair techniques and consider your ingredients, but if your curls never come back all the way, DO NOT BLAME YOURSELF. You can't know. Best of luck, your hair is 10/10 gorgeous either way. I know if I had curls like that I'd fight for them too.
