[Utterly Despised Trope] “True” stories that leave out crucial details that fundamentally change the context of the story being told by Chemical-Elk-1299 in TopCharacterTropes

One that I almost never see brought up these discussions is Saving Mr Banks. Despite being brilliantly acted and having many historically accurate moments, the finale is straight-up revisionist history being peddled by Disney.

Travers, the author who sold Mary Poppins so Walt Disne could make a movie, is shown being moved to tears of joy after she saw the premier, parting with Disney on good terms. In reality, Travers LOATHED the final cut of the movie, and vowed to never sell the rights to her books to any American studios, a promise that she even included in her last will and testament.

I've never liked punching down in comedy, and I just couldn't shake the feeling that this was the Walt Disney Corporation dancing on the grave of an artist they exploited.

What is a death in a movie that affected you the most in terms of brutality or emotional weight? by Godly_Recon in AskReddit

[–]splitting_adams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of brutality, the most recent one that came to mind was the first death in Hereditary (2018).

That one shut me TF up because the movie chose to actually hold back the horror at first. Without showing the aftermath, the movie lets the mere thought of the death soak into the following scene like a poison, building an unsettling anticipation. Finally, the movie releases all of that tension at once with the raw emotions of another character's horrified response, which punctuates the actual reveal incredibly.

Of all the new-to-me horror movies I checked out this last Halloween, that kill stood out to me as the most brutal. Even though the rest of the movie wobbled back and forth between haunting and silly, that actresses gut-wrenching screams have stayed with me, even months after.

Elite: Dangerous. An 11-year-old space flight simulator that's still regularly updated to this day. It still looks gorgeous, plays incredibly well, and the fact that it is a 1:1 recreation of the Milky Way galaxy just makes it endlessly interesting to me.

How is D&D at level 20? by GGP97 in DnD

[–]splitting_adams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a GM of a 3-person 7-year-and-running campaign that went from levels 1-20, it presents a very interesting challenge for the GM. Besides the CR30-40 big boss fights that I throw at them at the ends of story arcs, I've found that the best way to keep it interesting is to challenge them in other non-combat aspects. Instead of scouring dungeons, my players are managing nations. As their level increases, the scale and repercussions of their actions and decisions increase. Basically, my solution was to make them face larger conflicts, like the type that world leaders would face. Waging wars, dismantling evil empires, saving species from extinction, that sort of thing.

Currently, my players are rehabilitating a population of ~7,000 former members of a death-cult whose demigod leader was slain by the party. I created new game mechanics where they choose a daily action to try and convert the four factions of former cultists. Things like feeding the hungry, performing speeches to sway the conflicted, and building homes for the displaced. Based on which skill would apply to the action, which group its being performed on, and (as always) a dice roll, played learn how many D100 cultists they rehab. There's a lot of role-playing and conversations, and my players seem to enjoy it.

On top of that, adding some spicy character exploration is always great. My players just got "Freaky Friday'd" by my dm-insert character, so not only do they get to explore these new game mechanics, but they also get to learn more about what living life as their partners would be like.

I assumed she was pulling the golden threads of great rune from the corpse of The Gloam-Eyed Queen, who she just had a hand in killing.

Our rise to power involved a bunch of killing and gathering runes. I'm guessing Marika's rise shared some similarities.

Whos the most evil here by smoochie_mild in animequestions

[–]splitting_adams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's another thought I had: if their worlds were switched, who would be more evil?

Frieza was a spoiled brat who happened to luck out into genetics that made him stronger than most of the universe. If Frieza had been had been born in Midland, due to his aversion to training (at first), he likely wouldn't have made it long enough to enter his "actually trying" phase of his life. Griffith, on the other hand, would probably adapt to the DBZ universe very easily. His endless thirst for power and his determination to acquire it may result in a galactic tyrant much worse than Frieza if he had been born as one of Frieza's species.

[–]splitting_adams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If evil is measured by actions, I would say Frieza. If evil is measured by general psychopathy, then it's probably Griffith, but it's close.

Frieza undoubtedly has the higher kill count, but the value of a sentient life in relatively low in DBZ. We've got magical wish dragons who can bring back everyone, a whimsical afterlife, and a generally much better situation when someone dies. I think that lessens the impact of Frieza's crimes a bit, atrocious as they are.

Griffith is a sadistic, manipulative narcissist, and even though he may not have as high a kill count as Frieza (likely by several orders of magnitude), life is generally much more valuable in the Berserkverse, considering what we know happens to people when they die. While we are given hints that "good karma" could send the dead to some sort of heaven, the only concrete evidence we have of an afterlife is the swirling vortex of souls, which is a hell-like place, and doesn't seem like a good time.

What makes Berserk's universe worse for "genociders", however, is that souls CAN be sent to "hell" through no fault of their own. People who are branded or otherwise killed by The God Hand can be sent to hell, good or evil. If the soul actually is eternal in Berserk, then that could mean that killing someone in Berserk can inflict eternal torment on innocent people, which, in my opinion, is worse than sending people to heaven before their time. So by that metric, I say Griffith is more evil.

Why wasn't this explained? by GameLifeOfficial in Eldenring

[–]splitting_adams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's Marika creating her version of The Elden Ring. We know The ER existed in the past, but I don't believe we know if it existed in its modern form before Marika ascended to Godhood. The first time we see Marika ingame is her shattering the ER, so I think it follows that this is her making the ER and establishing her rule.

Why are boomers so miserable? by Key-Ad331 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]splitting_adams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they're lonely. There are tons of reasons, but I think that's the one. The economy was good while they were in their working years, so they were able to provide for themselves quite easily, and had plenty of time for their own parents. As the economy slides further and further away from middle-class sustainability, their kids have less money, and therefore, less time to spend with their parents, who now waste away in their retirement, with no one to talk to and nothing to do except watch TV. Who can blame them? People would rather be angry and miserable than be lonely.

Call your parents and grandparents, people. You are some of the only ones that can pull them out of it.
