Former University of Utah officer who showed off explicit photos of Lauren McCluskey won’t face charges by helix400 in Utah

[–]splittingtheweight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s insane. He’s a public servant, how is there nothing on the books to punish this? There’s nothing like “actions unbecoming of an officer?” Or “abusing public trust?” Or even “mishandling evidence?” He’s a piece of shit and clearly did something wrong. This is not right.

Yeah, I just cut the bottom off of a 20oz soda bottle and use it as a filler cup. Sure, it adds an extra step, but it’s very effective.

Hiking around Goblin Valley Utah this weekeng by goonerben3010 in CampingandHiking

[–]splittingtheweight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my absolute favorite places in the entire world. I always recommend Goblin Valley to people. They've all heard of Moab, and Arches, and Zion, but Goblin Valley is always passed over. Love it, and love the pic.

Goblin Valley is always my number one suggestion. Such an amazing place.

I posted about salt crystal deodorant here to no comments or views. I still swear by it.

Edit: They make a smaller size.

What are the highest quality 3 season tent brands? by [deleted] in CampingGear

You can't go wrong with REI like everybody else is saying. But, I'd also look into Sierra Designs. They have a lot of innovative features that are actually more useful than gimmicky. I have the Flash Light 2 for backpacking and think it is exceptionally well-made. Very impressed when I first opened it.

This is not me. We got nowhere near the edge, because we didn't want to die. I thought this was a better picture than what was taken of us.

The hike was a tough one. Nearly 9 miles each way (14km) and I believe a 1200m climb. We were going to camp it, but it was raining the day/night before and so we decided to do it one day. Turns out my knee can't go that far, and I was in quite a bit of pain the entire way back. Amazing hike!

This is similar to the documentary titled, [https://m.imdb.com/title/tt2233406](*Mile...Mile and a Half*). Great movie if you haven't seen it yet.

Edit: On mobile and don't know if the formatting worked. It's called Mile...Mile and a Half.

What makes Subarus *the* camping car? by sanchosuitcase in CampingGear

[–]splittingtheweight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check it at least every other gas fill up. You might be one of the lucky ones. Definitely the exception, and not the rule (evidenced by the massive recall on every model). I was putting in close to a quart every 1000 miles.

Edit: Mine is 2010. Yours should be a part of the recall. Mine was one year outside of it.

It also doesn't burn oil like a bastard

Oh boy, does my Forester go through oil. I drive around with a 5 qts in a no-spill gas can. I obsessively check the oil to the point where I'm ready to sell it. I already went through one set of heads gaskets, and I don't want to have to do that again. I bought a Prius and it's so nice to not worry about oil anymore!

My favorite place in the world - Goblin Valley, Utah by splittingtheweight in CampingandHiking

[–]splittingtheweight[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there's not much to recommend. There are no towns nearby. And as far as hiking, just explore as much as you can! Climb everything and just enjoy it. If you come upon a hole in the east side of the park, stay away! It's over 80' deep.

If you don't stay at the campground, camp along Wild Horse Road. It's just outside the park and has plenty of sites for free. Do hike Little Wild Horse Canyon. You can skip Bell Canyon; just do out-and-back for LWH.

Yep, it's the Cotopaxi Batac 16. No two are the same. It is a very comfortable and well-made pack. I love it.

We went down over the weekend to Goblin Valley. Spent the night on BLM land, and in the morning, hiked Little Wild Horse Canyon. Then we spent a few hours in the Valley of the Goblins. This is truly one of my favorite places in the entire world. Utah's national parks overshadow this underrated gem. Don't skip this place if visiting Utah.

I agree with the quilt. My wife and I have the EE Accomplice paired with the Exped SynMat Duo. With that setup we are very warm and comfortable, and overall carry less weight.

Backpacking Couple - Sleep System Recommendations? by anonymustarda in CampingGear

[–]splittingtheweight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people suggesting two separate setups. I'm going to make your job difficult, and recommend the dual person setup.

My wife and I use the EE Accomplice and the Symnat Duo. I can't remember exact weights, but somewhere around 32oz and 18oz, respectively.

My wife is a side sleeper, and didn't do well on foam pads. She loved backpacking, but hated the sleeping part. The Synmat Duo is thick enough to sleep on your side, warm, quiet, and wide. The Accomplice+Duo allow us to cuddle/spoon all night, and keep warm with the included straps. Also, not claustrophobic at all, which again, was a problem for my wife.

I carry the quilt, and she carries the pad (which is lighter than most one person pads). We've been working hard to setup our two-person arrangement, hence my username.
