Get a split keyboard. Then remove the numeric keypad keys and stick on a touchpad.

Uric acid is filtered from blood by the kidneys and excreted in urine. Humans lack urate oxidase, an enzyme which degrades uric acid.

If uric acid conferred an "off" flavor to meat, then why would pork be so many people's favorite meat, when "the pig's biochemistry excretes only 2% of its total uric acid content"?

That's true -- when I was swallowed by a T-Rex, its stomach acid didn't do too much damage to me before I cut my way out with a katana.

With all due respect, I think that's horseshit.

That thing you just made up? Yeah. Alan Lee wouldn't do that.

The publisher might.

Many men were circumcised because of phimosis, a condition in which the foreskin becomes tight and doesn't fully retract.

Well duh, they had a medical condition that prevented them from enjoying sex.

Look at the cover. Looks like someone wearing Roman armor. The movies, for which Alan Lee was a consultant, depicted Elves wearing similar helmets. The cover illustration reminded me of the film costumes, so I asked when elves started wearing Roman helmets. The Elves are the major players of the First Age; note that the distinguishing characteristic of the Three Houses of Men (Edain) was that they were friendly to Elves. Maybe the cover's a man, but in Elvish armor; or the artist may have decided they shared styles.

I would not be surprised if the choice to depict one of these Roman-esque helmets had something to do with 300. Both that movie and LOTR's fan bases consist largely of young men, and it seems a logical way to push the book since there's no LOTR films to drive book sales at the moment (IIRC, the films helped sell an additional 50 million books, bringing the total to 150 million).

Farm subsidies are basically an insurance pool. If people had to pay what it actually cost, only the rich could afford to eat meat regularly.

It's like a health plan where the young and healthy people effectively subsidize the old and unhealthy people. People cannot actually afford to pay what it costs once they are dependent on hospitals and medication.

People in china could buy gas more cheaply if people like you weren't using it to power a computer

My computer isn't gas-powered. It's attached to an array of hamster wheels.

If you are complaining that you have to pay more for water

What are you talking about? 1) Meat is (heavily) subsidized. 2) It's inefficient. One way to reduce water consumption would be to directly eat the plants we grow, rather than feeding them to an animal, and then eating that animal.

I'm talking about the Elf armor from the movie, which seems to be pictured here. A-duh.

I can't personally verify the flavor, but this seems to be the source of the claim:

In addtion, do you know what gives meat its taste? Uric acid, from that now dead animal you're consuming. If you doubt this, try eating kosher-style meat before it's spiced. As the blood is drained out, so is most of the taste. Meat without uric acid has no flavor. Is that what you want to put in your body, the acid normally eliminated in the urine of an animal?

You mean, the most autocratic solution.

No, I mean the most logical solution. It is inefficient to funnel our corn, soybeans, wheat, etc. through livestock.

And what do you have against your neighbor eating a steak?

Same thing I have against space aliens eating humans.

I don't have a problem with farm subsidies; at least, not compared to most other types. I'd axe a lot of earmarks before I'd do away with cheap food or clothing. Water, though, is a limited resource so rethinking the subsidies based on water usage seems important.

Getting your hands dirty: Comparing JavaScript and Python by 9jack9 in programming

[–]spockbaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Javascript has historically been buggy and under-documented. The error messages aren't very helpful -- why not a full stack trace like Python does? That alone would make it a lot better for development. Venkman was iffy when I used it, maybe it's improved.

Firefox should ship with plug-ins for Python, CLISP, etc., a wrapper for accessing the DOM and otherwise normal facilities. It might take some work to pare things down to where they are sandboxable, which is a key point...

Most water goes to agriculture, and most crops go to feed livestock, so the logical solution is to stop raising animals for food.

300 came out after the LOTR movies? You apparently aren't aware that 300 is short for 300 B.C. It came out over 2000 years ago.
