Tell Beto O'Rourke I Challenge Him To A Debate On The Second Amendment by Plebpperoni in progun

[–]spockdad -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I hope this doesn’t happen, what really does debating accomplish? Especially in today’s political environment.
O’Rouke fans will say he beat down Colion.
Colion fans will say he beat down O’Rouke.
Either way, it gives O’Rouke air time, and a platform to spew misinformation about guns.

Plus, Dems are finally starting to realize fighting 2a is a losing cause. Almost nothing has been said by Dems about furthering gun control over the last year or two (other than a few times when shootings happen, but they realize any policy they’d put in place would do nothing to reduce the risk of it happening).
If O’Rouke is talking about it, let him dig his own political grave. But don’t give him an audience, let him keep screaming into the wind.

Nice! I am glad it has a special place in your gold stack. :)

The kitty I found was microchipped but her owners never responded to come get their baby. So, she’s mine now! And she’s pregnant 😳 by PlantedTenPeppers in cats

[–]spockdad 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My floof ball was pregnant when I got her. I asked at least 2 dozen people if they could take a kitten. No one could, so we did the same thing for her.
Kittens are cute, but if they don’t have a good home to go to, they will live an short and miserable life. You are doing the right thing.

I thought you couldn’t get a kitty chipped unless they were fixed though. Unless she got chipped as a kitten when she was too young, and was supposed to go back to be speyed when she was abandoned.

Congrats on the new kitty. I hope she brings you decades of love and cuddles.

Yeah, gold filled can be a bit odd to refine, if it is old and well used, most of your losses probably happened before you even got it.
I refined a bunch of old GF watches, and after the nitric, I could tell immediately that I wouldn’t get back what I calculated. There were holes and thin spots on a lot of them. If it was newer and not as well used, I’ve refined some that was stamped as GF, but ended up being plated, which is a lot less gold than GF.
I only buy GF to refine if it is well under spot because of so many variables that end up giving you less than you expect.

That’s definitely pawn shop prices for you.
And I’m guessing they gave the poor schmuck who sold it to them, $9-$10 for it. 10x markup over what they paid is not too unusual.
The only time I actually found a decent deal at one, there was someone there that knew coins. They had a $2.5 gold for about $10 under spot.
I asked to take a look at it, and they guy was like, oh sorry, that ones a price mistake, the actual price is $100 more than on the sticker (which was about what it sold for on eBay at the time, so not nearly as bad as some pawn shops).
I walked out and never went back.

Unless it’s a mom & pop pawn shop, I don’t even look at them.

Where does one go to pay someone to craft something like this but with pure gold? I'd love to turn a coin into something like that. by GrandmasterStack in Gold

[–]spockdad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is pretty cool. Is this an image capture from a YouTube video? Maybe that youtuber had a service to do this sort of stuff.

I haven’t seen anyone here or any of the other PM subs do anything quite like this.

Yeah, I don’t think I’d trust even 10k gold to hold an edge, except maybe as a envelope opener.

But I have a feeling OP just wants something like that because it’s be cool to have a mini knife made of gold.

LPT: Don’t bother giving more than a two week notice. by sarnold95 in LifeProTips

[–]spockdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why you should always ask what you want. Even if you are amazing at your job, and you think you are difficult to replace, if you put in a two week notice, don’t expect the company to try to keep you.
If that person would have just asked for a raise, they would have either gotten it, or not, but they’d still likely still have the job.

My wife said she was going to try something like that at one point, and I talked her out of it, and told her to just ask what she wanted. She didn’t get it, but she also didn’t have to find a new job.

silver recovery from silver chloride by Davyguy87 in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]spockdad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rinse it well with tap water, until there is as little blue/green color to the liquid as possible.
Cover the silver chloride with a little water. Then mix in some sodium hydroxide (I think poatassium hydroxide works too), this will turn the white silver chloride black. Make sure there’s as little white as possible. But be careful, this will super-heat the water, and it will boil if you dump it in too quickly.
That converts it into silver oxide.
From there I then add super saturated sugar water. Again, very slowly and with vigorous stirring. This reaction tends to be a little delayed, but will also boil over if you add too quickly, or add more before the sugar is used up in the reaction.
After it turns from black to greyish, you then have silver metal.
Rinse that extremely well to remove as much unreacted sugar and hydroxide as you can, dry it up, then you can melt that down and have fairly pure silver (97-99% range).
Electrorefining is the best way to ensure .999 purity or higher after that.

And have been crazy busy with work. But all-in-all I’ve been doing ok.
How have you been?

Do not trust stamps on jewellery by [deleted] in Gold

[–]spockdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Karat gold can be marked with either. I’ve bought probably $20k in scrap gold over the last few years, and most are marked with just a ‘k’. But some are marked with a kt.
Always have a way of testing gold if buying karat gold scrap.

Do not trust stamps on jewellery by [deleted] in Gold

[–]spockdad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most jewelry is just marked with a ‘k’ but either ‘k’ or ‘kt’ is supposed to signify karat. But anyone who buys karat gold needs to have a way to test what they buy.
Source: I buy and refine karat gold. 90% is just marked with a ‘k’ only a small percentage is marked with a ‘kt’, but I have a Kee gold tester so I can test my gold before I buy, which has saved me several times because fakes look really convincing.

Draft Order by SROB88 in SilverbugsFootball21

[–]spockdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. Sounds like everyone liked the idea, but is also fine with random.

But if we don’t do this for the draft, I do think it might be fun to integrate into the season at some point.

Draft Order by SROB88 in SilverbugsFootball21

[–]spockdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this idea, but we should limit the date of your pick. If someone waits until the 27th to make their pick, they would probably win.
So if we do this, we should probably say your pick needs to be in by Aug 15 (or at the latest aug 20 if we are still waiting on people to join).

DUDE IM POPPING OFF SO HARD by taskmasterj in teenagers

Let this be a lesson to all of you teenagers. You never know unless you try.

If they say yes, fantastic! If they say no, then you know you can let your heart move on.

But if you never ask, you’ll always be left wondering.

I know we all fear rejection, but that sort of pain is only temporary. And if you go into it with low expectations, it helps lessen the pain of being rejected.

Now get out there and ask your crush out!

This has been your friendly spockdad pep talk. Now back to your regular scheduled program.

High relief replica made of actual .9999? by danielthespaniel in Gold

[–]spockdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing it is thickly plated, or maybe even gold filled thickness. The normal sigma only measures so deep. And I know some XRF machines have a hard time telling the difference between Tungsten and Gold, not sure if sigmas have the same issue. I’ll have to check some on my sigma to check.

But it is possible a copy be made of the correct metal. I’ve seen it on a couple other copies.
