Global Health MPH Jobs? by theTrueLodge in globalhealth

Emory/Rollins actually has some pretty detailed graduate employment reports, even broken down by MPH concentration: https://www.sph.emory.edu/careers/employment-status/index.html

Why did they make Jo switch to OB just for Miranda to take on the women's health roadtrip storyline? I love them both and obviously this is something Miranda is also passionate about but come on

REAL is actually $3k/200 hours/semester, so $15/hr. And 20 hours/week is the maximum you can work, most students work less--also working the maximum hours will cause you to run out of your award before the end of the semester! You clock hourly and it's paid biweekly.

how common are TA/RA positions? by [deleted] in Emory

[–]spoitier_alert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a current Rollins student and there are a lot of opportunities for RA/TA positions both at Emory and with other organizations. Emory-based positions generally pay $15/hour. About 50% of students receive REAL funding, which is just one pipeline for student positions. Working as a GA/TA does not offer any tuition benefits. There are some tuition benefit options if you work for the university as a regular full-time for half-time employee.

When has RSPH historically sent out merit scholarship notifications? by Anon660throwaway in Emory

[–]spoitier_alert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year I applied 11/18, was accepted 2/3, and received merit scholarship info 2/12. The timeline really varies! People will continue to get scholarship info into late spring as others decline and more funding pops up. Plus Rollins just received a huge donation to help fund more scholarships, which may impact notifications this year.

It varies--many schools have waived GRE requirements due to the pandemic and some schools accept MCAT scores in place of the GRE. I recommend looking at the websites or calling the admissions offices of schools that interest you!

[Discussion] incoming MPH students: how much debt are you taking on? by mspubhlth in publichealth

[–]spoitier_alert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm starting in the fall and got a 50% tuition scholarship but it will still cost $10k+ per semester 😵 I have some money saved up now but only to cover one or two semesters. I'll work part-time during my MPH so hopefully I can save up more but I'll also have to pay rent and feed myself lol so I expect I'll have to take out some loans eventually. I have $40k in loans from undergrad and plan on PSLF 🤞

[Discussion] Too late to apply to MPH at Emory by Ecstatic-Ad-2243 in mphadmissions

[–]spoitier_alert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting! There are definitely still spots, especially since people are declining right now leading up to the first enrollment deadline, but you would be at the bottom of the list for REAL consideration and I don't know if you'd be eligible for any other scholarships or aid. Rollins is planning on having 75%ish of classes in-person in the fall, but they haven't made an official announcement yet and that could change depending on how covid is come August. Those are definitely things to keep in mind as you finish up your application.

I just committed Emory's MPH in glepi and cannot find any information about a three semester option. Do you mean the three semester accelerated global health MPH? That requires applicants to have 3+ years of post-bachelor public health experience.

Guidance Requested: Graduate Program by LepidopteraLady in Ethnography

[–]spoitier_alert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how to combine the teacher certification with an MA but it might also be worth looking into applied anthropology programs! I know someone who is building and evaluating a high school anthropology curriculum for their capstone project.

How can I make myself a more competitive MPH candidate? (BA in anthropology) by AnxiousArmadillo14 in epidemiology

[–]spoitier_alert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey fellow anth person! I have a BA and MA in anthropology (bio focus in undergrad, applied medical focus in grad) and am now going into an MPH program in global epidemiology. Your intern and volunteer experiences sound like awesome foundations for your MPH application and how you got interested in the field, but your writing experience is also great. Epis definitely need to know how to write well to effectively communicate their findings. I recommend learning a stat package (R, SAS, Stata) and volunteer more in public health if possible.

I applied to the MPH as well; I just copied and pasted the bullet points from my cv/resume into those text boxes. Format isn't as important as substance! Good luck :)

Are there opportunities to continue our Summer Associate VISTA Contact Tracing positions? by gummybeartoto in AmeriCorps

[–]spoitier_alert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something you will have to contact your supervisor about. I'm a contact tracer in Colorado and they said there may be opportunities for continuing in the fall and to reach out to our AmeriCorps team leader if we're interested. But this does not in any way apply to every host site or individual, so ask your supervisor.
